kworker using all of single thread
I installed openSUSE Tumbleweed on my new Thinkpad E14 Gen 4 (AMD). I noticed the laptop ran kind of hot and the fan was quite loud, at least louder than my older laptop.
I looked at htop and saw a thread was at 100% usage. After some searching, I turned on kernel tasks and saw kworker and another kernel tasks was using the entire thread.
The kworker was sometimes called pm and sometimes called usb_hub_wq. I looked them up and saw two solutions:
-
Change settings in BIOS - there's really not that many options in the BIOS, and changing them didn't work.
-
Masking /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/XXXXX - none of them interrupted much, although one was at 38 to 40. I couldn't edit the file, so I left it be.
I installed the server packages, so I boot into tty. I can see some error messages about USB 4 and some of the forum discussions mentioned it as well. However, I do not know of a way to fix the issue.
Can anyone help?

It seems that your laptop is running hot and the fan is loud due to a kworker thread using 100% of a single thread. The kworker thread is sometimes called pm and sometimes called usb_hub_wq. You have tried changing settings in BIOS and masking /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/XXXXX, but neither solution worked. You have also noticed error messages about USB 4 when booting into tty.
One possible solution is to try updating your kernel to the latest version. This may fix any bugs or issues related to USB 4 and kworker threads. You can do this by running the following command in the terminal:
sudo zypper update
If updating the kernel does not work, you can try disabling USB 4 in the BIOS settings. This may help reduce the load on the kworker thread and lower the temperature of your laptop. To do this, you will need to enter the BIOS settings during startup and look for an option to disable USB 4.
If neither of these solutions work, you may need to seek further assistance from the openSUSE.org community or a professional technician.
Actually, if he's on Tumbleweed, it should be
sudo zypper dup. Usingsudo zypper updateis for Leap and a good way to hose a Tumbleweed install. There's no options in my BIOS for USB 4. Also, I did a clean install and everything, updated and all. Still burns. I am pretty sure it is a kernel issue. At least I can return the laptop. My old Thinkpad is fine for now.
Is that a random ChatGPT answer floating around here? I can smell those miles away nowadays ..
