SSR Character Discussion: Jamil

Journal Entry

Loyalty and vengeance. A heart is torn in two by opposing forces, before it is pieced together again by that great binder of all things: trust. A shadow finds a strong, steady figure to follow and is once again given form and meaning. Light and dark, life and death—they're two side of the same coin. The sun sculpts out shadows, and the night is where all day-dwellers find rest.

Dodge all 2x is pretty nuts, actually.

Too bad the rest of his kit is really just spam ougi to spam skill with some passive DATA in case you can't 4 chain every turn. At least he got Zehek'd instead of Jin'd/Herja'd, so he's got that going for him.

Not enough damage and not enough utility. Moving Dodge All to the ougi and putting a real steroid or valuable debuffs (Twilight Terror clone?) on his s3 would help. Or making s1 add hits rather than increase cap and change poison to toxicosis. Maybe scaling supp. based on enemy debuffs?

What role does this character fill and what content do they work particularly well in?

Jamil is an aggressive attacker and defensive debuffer, and thus generally works well in mid-tier or lower content. He can work in some higher-level content, but he tends to fall off in effectiveness compared to units with damage mitigation buffs.

How would a new player make the best use for this character?

Hold off his S2 until before a Special Attack, and basically just spam his other two skills. Other than that, he's fairly automatic.

How does this character compare to their other versions?

Compared to his other two versions, SSR Jamil is an attacker with no conditions to his damage and no real costs to perform;

Dark Jamil being an Enmity Attacker who has to sacrifice Charge Bar and Health to buff himself up and weaken the foe, and relies on his foe being in Break to get a huge damage buff at the cost of his MA rate.

SR Jamil on the other hand is a Targeted Assassin who can shift Hostility to an ally and ramp up his DA rate, but besides a skill nuke on his Ougi against Hitmarked targets, he's mostly relegated to dealing only Normal Attack damage.

Obviously, with the lack of conditions restricting his damage, variety of damage sources, and defensive debuffs, SSR Jamil is miles better and more usable than his SR counterparts, though he still finds himself being fairly niche regardless.

Would you like to see an alternate or limited SSR version of this character?

I certainly wouldn't mind it. I haven't touched much of his story content besides his appearance in No Rain, No Rainbow, but I imagine he'd look dangerously good with a Yukata. Odds are higher he'd get a Halloween or Christmas alt, but, who knows.

How does this character perform in the following:

OTK - He's a good choice for a variety of setups, though it's worth pointing out that he lacks any gimmicks to make him standout in any of them. He has two skill nukes (one of which lowers Debuff Res. by 10%, though he has no autocasts. He has a Charge Attack, but no personal buffs to it. He's got a staggeringly high base TA rate, but no Echoes or Assassin buffs to benefit it. Good to use if you've got him and lack any priority units for OTK setups.

Farming Stages (Short to Medium fights) - Very good choice. His skill nukes and high TA rate allow him to dish out fairly high damage, and his frequent Ougis thanks to his 30% boost to Charge Rate and 20% Charge each turn when not hit means he'll get frequent S1 resets, making Medium fights safer with 50% DATA Down and Delays.

High Difficulty (Long fights) - He can be useful in some of these, but he begins to lose value since, while the burst damage on his skill nukes is impressive, and the frequency he can put out Delays and DATA Debuffs is nice, but at the end of the day he's an attacker who puts all his chips into defensive debuff utility - that being Accuracy Lowered, DATA Down, and Delay. With the right setup he can Ougi super often, but even if he could Ougi every turn he still doesn't bring sufficient utility to keep broad relevance in HL content.

Full Auto - Extremely good. The only major issue he'd have here is his Accuracy Lowered debuff timing would be off by a bit, but he will reliably spit out damage and debuffs on full auto. Probably his best role besides Farming Stages.

Battle System V2 - Here's where things get iffy; Jamil can work in V2 battles - Tefnut and Diaspora have Debuff Omens, Wamdus has Skill DMG Omens, and both omens also appear on Replicard bosses, but besides Ca Ong Militis, each of the Water V2 bosses have one thing that Jamil has no ability to assist in - Hitcount Omens. The lowest Hitcount I can see among the raids is 30, and at best, with Echoes, Jamil can manage (on a turn with both his damage skills available)...Anywhere from 4-8 hits. His DATA Debuffs aren't as valuable in V2 battles, and he lacks any unique strengths to compare to other attackers, so I can only recommend you use him at your own risk here.

How are you to build a team setup for this character?

It's a little difficult to build a setup for Jamil primarily because...You have to build a team for Jamil. I think the best team setup would just be your choice of MC, Adam, Cain, and Jamil, with Lobelia in the backline. Adam's Auxiliary effect will grant Jamil 13% charge each turn, accelerating his Ougi use and S1 spam, and Cain can help him capitalize on his high TA rate with Instantaneity and the 20% Echoes for 2.5 turns on Ougi against someone with Secret Plot.

Obviously, other offensive support units can work well - Mahira (though she makes Jamil's DATA debuffs redundant) provides offensive spec buffs and Echoes, as well as DEF Down debuffs to ramp his damage even higher. G. Eugen can more dramatically accelerate his charge bar, as well as provide him a critrate boost, Lennah can take advantage of his chargerate to more conscionably use La Main Vert, which helps Jamil thanks to Supplemental Damage...

You've got ample options, it's just a matter of how you want to and how you can make him more potent.

How does this character compare to the others who play a similar role in the same element?

Normally I like to do this part, but I feel like Jamil has way too much competition, all of which do one or more things that Jamil wants to do better than him, and a lot of them are frickin' Limiteds. Just know that the reason most characters perform better than him is that their defensive utility is largely in reducing incoming damage rather than reducing the number of incoming hits, and more often than not they have offensive or other support utility besides just defense and personal damage.

Is this character worth buying with a Surprise Ticket, gameplay-wise?

Nnnnope. Jamil's particular brand of defense just doesn't work out, and he doesn't provide anything else to stand out as an attacker - doesn't even have personal offensive buffs to make him shine.

Which EMPs would you prioritize?

Charge Bar, Crit, then TA. Dodgerate is kind of a joke with his 2-hit Dodge-All on an 8-turn CD and Into Hiding, and it's still not going to save you if for whatever reason you bring him into a raid like Tefnut or Diaspora who has All-Ally Normals.

Save 3 stars for his EMS if you want, but don't expect it to be a gamechanger that spikes his usability.

Which Over Mastery and Aetherial bonuses are best to look out for?

For Over Mastery, Debuff Success and Critrate are probably the best to go for, but CA Specs or Skillcap can also be useful.

For Aetherial Bonuses, either Crit, Supplemental DMG, or Elemental ATK up.

Which type of Awakening Bonuses work best for this character?

Attack Awakening hands down, though Multiattack Awakening, even if it is just a tad redundant, can be good for the memes. Which, let's be real, running Jamil is kind of a meme.

What would you like to see them gain for an EMP Skill?

For the memes, I'd love to see boost to Chargerate. Give this man +70% Chargerate and watch him still be niche.

But if we're being legit, he's probably going to get something like personal Echoes against Poisoned Foes.

oh yeah, he got an SSR...

... and actually, that kinda covers my opinion here. it's pretty forgettable.

hell, they didn't even really give him a new design... seriously, i had to put his SR and SSR sprites side by side to find ANY difference between them, LOL
