Shopping advice for gaming headphones gift

Headphones - Closed Back

Hi everyone, I’m very new at this and am still trying to understand the basics, so please forgive my ignorance. I’m shopping for my 12 y.o. son’s birthday gift, he wants gaming headphones with a mic that are compatible with iPad 10 or newer specifically, but cross-platform capabilities would be wonderful as we also have a PC, a switch, and a PS5. His specific request was a Sony WH-1000M4 but these are significantly outside of my budget. I would happily spend $150 USD but more would be difficult. He also uses headphones to listen to music but rarely to watch TV, and some degree of noise cancellation would be a big plus as it can be a noisy household. I feel like I’m asking a lot for the budget I have, which is part of why I have no idea how to begin. If there’s any advice I’d appreciate it very much.

if youd be patient and consider purchasing used/refurbished there are times that the m4s go on sale for around that price. places like ebay offer buyer protection. Also if it bothers you, replacement earpads are around 20-30 dollars which could come at another time. Ive seen the m4s go for around 110-120 on r/AVexchange from time to time so that could be an option as well. with a set of fresh pads you could get em for your budget.

You can always go for budget headphones like grani CO7W by EasySMX

Probably best to get him a gift voucher & allow him to make his own choice. If $150 is your budget that should give him plenty of options. No 12yo needs a pair of WH-1000M4's for gaming, & if he sees it as otherwise, he can work out how to come up with the shortfall himself
