Realistic wages for Championship

Discussion

I’ve just secured back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship with Yeovil Town and have a few contracts expiring, but the wage demands seem really high. For example, my star striker (18 goals, 4 assists and 6 PoM) wants to go from 1,800 to 9,000 a week. Is this reasonable or am I being take for a ride? I still have time to withdraw my offer.

Small exploit that you can use if you want and you are not expecting to inmediatly go down.

Offer a release clause of 0 in case of relegation. If you are confident in mantaining the category you can use this to attract players for lower wages than expected.

Such a dumb bug

I mean, i wouldnt call it a bug, but certainly is something that the club shouldn't let you do. What i would do is that if a contract has a release clause thats to low maybe the president should force you to renegotiate it or maybe set a minimum in contract negotiation.

Maybe bug was the wrong word, broken probably fits better. When you can do this as a big team like Liverpool in order to get world class players to take a lower wage it’s certainly not something that you should do. Even in reality it’s more realistic that a player would demand a one year deal with an optional extension over a 0 release clause

Ooo didn't know the clause had an effect if your team was not expected to get relegated. I thought in that case it would not affect the player demands. Then yeah, thats broken.

It should diminish its effectiveness progresively based on expected position up to a point it starts having no effect as a contract clause. Like, if Aston Villa, Brighton or West Ham offer this clause in a contract it should not have an effect on the player because not many are expecting them to get relegated next season.

Now that i think of it, it should be detrimental, because they would be basically saying that they see relegation as a real posibility next season.

That’s really handy, thanks!

Another one I use is if they are, let's say English (with no other nationalities) and you know they're never playing for their country you can add a massive wage increase after 1 international game. That allows you to get them to agree to a more reasonable contract.

It is reasonable

I think it is

Okay cool, thanks both!

It is reasonable but be aware that all your squad will want ridiculously increased wages now your up a division. It is up to you whether you stay loyal to those players and give the wages, or upgrade the team with players worthy of those wages.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve assessed which performed the best for me and am culling the rest. I’ve got a few good loans coming back which could help, plus a few free transfer that could plug some gaps. I’ve sadly messed me my star DLP Jordan James around so much that he wants to explore his options, but I’m hoping I can emotionally damage him enough over the next two months to make him take a lower wage.

If you look at the wage budget for the championship you can see what the other teams are spending. It sounds like this is an important player for you and relatively speaking 9k is a pretty good deal. Negotiate it down a bit anyway, try give him like 4k, it’s still a big rise and throw in some performance based bonuses.

You’ll likely have to haggle a bit but remember that the rest of the squad will now want a relative pay rise as they can see what you’ve given the striker. It’s easy to spin out of control with finances, your best bet is to be cautious with money and get lots of loans. Once you get to the EPL it’ll be time to spend the cash.

The championship has a huuuuuuge range of salaries. In my save Sheffield utd have a 1.3m budget and I have an 80k budget. The next smallest is about 240k…

If you want to pay more, you have to earn more. Which is a struggle when you have a 5900 capacity stadium 😀

I’m interested to know - how would you get someone’s demands to go down from 9k to 4k?

They ask for 9k, you offer 4 and go from there. You can quickly judge if you can get them to take a lower wage. It doesn’t always work but it’s defo worth haggling at lower levels.

I find offering good bonuses can mean less fixed wage cost and I’m happy to pay out bonuses if they’re for performance. Generally if it’s costing more the team is doing better and can mean more cash coming in.

You should be paying him £90k a week for having to live in Yeovil 😂

Better than Chard

Never a truer word said. Is the infamous gang from Chard still active? The Chard Hards? 😂

Not from the UK, what’s wrong with Chard/Yeovil?

Everything

Haha. Yes it’s a real shithole

Thankfully I no longer live there as it is a shithole, but they make for a brilliant save

Likewise. Being a former resident of Stoford and former Westfield attendee, I think it’s only fair I can comment on it 😁😁😁

Its respectable if hes able to do the business in the championship but consider whether you are strong enough to stay up, make sure youve a relegation wage drop clause. Also can you get others in for less or is your star striker maybe a decent value asset to cash in on whilst hes hot property? Can reinvest into better, younger players etc

Up the glovers!

There’s a gk for Bournemouth in my save who’s on 350k p/w- he’s been transfer listed for the last few seasons and is now in the final year of a contract- Tip: don’t sign players from the Saudi league lol

PrincessPortmanOP•

Thanks for the tip! 😂

Wage demands are somewhat pegged to your budget. If Man City tried to sign your striker for some reason, he'd want far more. And anyway, someone's value is relative to your replacement options.

Unless you have someone in the pipeline that's fit to be better OR you can find someone as good for cheaper elsewhere, then it's reasonable. If you can find a better striker for half the wage on a free, it's not.

1
AwfulHomesick•

Recently went through this and released nearly half of my first team squad on frees because they just weren’t good enough for the championship. League One/Two quality players that wanted more than 9k a week. If they’re good enough, do keep them on reasonable wages but don’t thin out your budget on players that can’t keep you up.

Wages are a real concern. I am in the premiership now and players who I would start to offload for better younger versions are almost impossible to move on due to their wages. I end up having to really fallout with yesterdays team heroes because Numpty United will buy them but only if I pay 20,000-40,000 towards their wages! I cannot imagine my current employer giving my new employer 10,000 a year towards my salary. I must be a poor negotiator when I change jobs in real life.

Bear in mind that 200k a week is the bottom end for a whole Championship squad's wage budget. 9k for your star player is to be expected.
