Shy geek seeking a friend

Never posted to reddit before. A friend suggested giving this a shot. Went through some rough stuff last year that put me in a hole for a long time. I'm not particularly adept at meeting people. Never really know what to say sometimes. Occasionally awkward and such. I'm pretty easy to get along with. I have a love for movies and tv shows. Anything with an engaging story really. Would like to meet someone nice and honest and who has a similar interest in those kinds of things.

"I just bought a bunch of Surly tallboys for a Firefly and thai food marathon, who wants in?"

Someone should really make this a thing.

BoomerFresh•

Well you brought it up, now you pretty much have to follow through and make this a reality.

Ha! I'm happy to encourage and facilitate its occurring...but I'm not so keen on the hosting.

I'll host that sounds amazing

Another random person saying I'd totally do this. I could even possibly host and definitely provide the Thai Food. (I work in an awesome Thai Restaurant) Also, kimota should join us!

Edit: Making a page on r/twincitiessocial so we don't derail this thread.

Assuming kimota enjoys Firefly, Surly and Thai food, of course. If not, this should probably move to a new thread so we don't hijack.

Ok, so a little about myself. I'm a guy. Anything scifi tends to get my attention. I do play video games but not too much anymore. I love having discussions about movies. Some people say I can be to serious but I've been known to have fun and make others laugh. Open to try new things however I need a gentle nudge sometimes. Not in the best place financially so going places is kind of like treating myself. Like I said I'm new to this kind of thing maybe a little out of my element. I'm about a half hour away from the cities in the washington county area (forest lake/wyoming/hugo) and it'd be nice if someone is around there too. Hope some of that helps.

Good for you on stepping out of your comfort zone. Keep it up!

You're in luck, this town is FULL of "nerds" that are more than happy to plan geek inspired events. Check out the local group GPS which is full of really fantastic people. They help throw a large 4 day convention every year called CONVERGENCE that is an amazing way for socially awkward people to feel like they "fit in." You're REALLY not alone in this town!

Come and try out the Sunday coffee meetup! ..any of the meetups actually - lots of nice people. I find people at the reddit meetups easier to get along with than groups on meetup.com. Hope you'll join us soon!

Have you thought about getting a dog? Dogs are fucking great.

I agree - meetup.com will put you in touch with others who share your interests in a low stress environment.

Is it time for a TwinCitiesR4R?

r/twincitiessocial is it, we're just into freaky mass gatherings orgies.

I'll come, but I'm leaving my shirt on.

Try coming out to any of the meetups! We went to laser tag on sunday and had a blast - about 13 people showed up! :) I also recommended the thursday shitty bar meetup, its the most laid back of them all

djcack•

The Wednesday Reddit board game meetup has 10-20 people who get together for a few hours to game, then often go out to a bar for a drink after the shop closes. It's at Dreamers in St. Louis Park. Click the link above for more info.

I hang out with a group that plays board games (designer board games like Risk if you've ever played that) twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays if you want to come out. Wednesdays are at Dreamers in St. Louis Park 5pm-10pm, and some of the same individuals go to The Source in Roseville on Fridays 7pm-2am.

We're pretty friendly, and are more than willing to teach someone the board games, so don't worry if you don't know anything about them, we're pretty good about introducing new comers to games that won't overwhelm you.

Kimota - good for you for posting! Maybe going to see a movie would be a good option? Believe me, the fact that you haven't been downvoted into the elder scrolls iv already is a good sign, especially by this hive mind!

Do you...

  • like soccer?
  • like music or art or museums, etc?
  • have Steam / XBL? If so, what are your gamertags?
