New to rally, what a shock

EA SPORTS WRC

I'm coming from GT3 racing and thought I'd pick up WRC for funsies and chill...

Well, color me surprised, I am terrible. I found some FFB settings and fixed my FOV and other settings as best as I could (why is the pro preset automatic shifting still, what on earth?). And I can't keep the thing on the track at all - I tried a random championship with Rally 3 cars which seemed "entry level" and boy am I bad. Do the brakes even work?

Is there a current guide for noobs to rally? I see the Dirt guide on this sub - how do I know what does and doesn't apply?

P.S. what graphics settings are you guys running for smoothest performance on a low end PC?

This made me laugh, I tried Assetto competizione after only doing rally and I hated it so much/felt the same way as you.

It’s a completely different driving style. Just keep driving/practicing and it’ll click

Oh man it made me so mad! I had to tell myself it's totally foreign to me and just a skill issue

I'll get there, something just tells me it won't be as chill as I hoped!

Well GT3 is all about being smooth, keeping your line, and keeping grip while rally is all about controlled chaos with your weight transfer. You actively want to slide before or in turns so that you can connect to the next turn with the perfect entry line

I mainly play WRC generations, but coming from GT3 you might want to move your brake bias way up front and you’ll get a better braking feeling around the tight corners imo.

Edit: also keeping an average/slow speed consistently at first is way way better for improvement than just flooring it in 5/6 gear on the straights.

Even though rally cars don't hit near the top speeds that F1 does, F1 drivers will still be the first to tell you that rally drivers are borderline insane for the type of driving that they do, and tremendously skilled at it. So no, it probably won't be as "chill" as you hoped lol. Glad you enjoy the game though! 👍

Jnt_710•

Chill is the last way I would describe it lol. When I want to chill I go drift on Assetto Corsa!

AndyB16•

Yeah. I'd say rally is probably the second LEAST chill motorsport after the Isle Of Man TT.

IsAlwaysAngryOP•

I done messed up but I'm committed now

2

haha you're awesome, and yeah rally ain't chill at all 🤣

Same, I tried ACC after having it for a while and not playing it, was struggling even on the easier AI settings. Though I found my biggest issue was having to learn tracks and finding the perfect braking points. Which I guess is one thing I love about rally is you don't really have to "learn" stages with a co-driver because I can't memorize to save my life. Also I love the feeling of sliding around like the wannabe drifter I am 😂

10
Da_Martin•

Same. I also love that you arent constantly aiming for that perfect lap. Fucked up a corner? Won't be seeing that one again until the next stage at the very least. Keep your head in and focus on the next corner.

ZannX•

Yea, I was driving to survive in DR 2.0. Playing a circuit game felt boring. And when playing wheel to wheel it felt frustrating that I couldn't just yeet the car to get past people. But after learning the finer points of shaving fractions of seconds off each turn, it became more interesting in a completely different way than rallying.

2
AztecTwoStep•

Make sure you turn drive assists off. They make acceleration and braking way less predictable and mess with your ability to shift weight and deliberately induce slides.

IsAlwaysAngryOP•

Oh yes, first thing I did!

what graphics settings are you guys running for smoothest performance on a low end PC?

Car Reflections - Ultra Low

Distant Objects - Medium (Any lower causes too much pop-in for my liking)

Crowds - Ultra Low

^^^ These are the most demanding settings as far as I tested.

Everything else on High. Game basically looks the same as max settings but with far better performance

12
IsAlwaysAngryOP•

Thanks! I'll give it a shot. Got everything low/ultra low and getting ~75 frames in snowy overcast conditions, 1080p.

I spend too much time barrel rolling/upside down to notice pop-in yet lol

TrickyPistachio•
  • Crowds actually make very little different to general performance. What they do affect are the occasional crowd-induced stutters. If you were to set Crowds to Ultra, you generally wouldn't notice the loss in performance but you would notice the occasional stutter -- maybe 1, maybe 2 per stage -- at certain predictable points. The lower you set Crowds, the briefer that stutter is. At 75fps, you may be able to get away with turning it higher without noticing the difference.

  • You need Crowds to be Low at least, not Ultra Low/Off. The game will still reset you for hitting an invisible spectator, so you still need to be able to see where the most important spectators are. Pacifico has a corner that is terrible for this.

  • Shadows are another big one. Go as low as you can bear, but try to avoid Ultra Low since it switches them off completely and makes the game look like a Blender preview. Beyond that, each tick higher in the Shadows setting is quite expensive on fps.

  • Mirrors Off.

  • Reflections were mentioned, and yes keep them down low. Unlike most graphics settings, Car Reflections push your CPU, not your GPU, so it's a bit of a weird one. Even on a high end system, Car Reflections can be brutal on performance, but if your GPU is bottlenecking things already, there can be a point where your CPU has room to Reflections a bit higher. It's something you could have a bit of an experiment with.

  • Use the Fidelity FX upscaling option. Tweak it with your AA setting; go for as low as you can bear really for the AA. WRC's native performance is just too poor for upscaling to not be worth it.

  • If you drive with an internal camera you get a big saving in fps as well, plus you get the added bonus of never seeing the car's body ghosting, due to the game's AA. Having AA set to Low or Medium will look shimmery, but if you use chase cam then having set to High can create afterimages around the car quite heavily, so you may need to go for Epic AA (or just accept the ghosting) if you're a chase cam user.

  • Post Processing Quality gives noticeable gains/losses too, and it can actually make things look worse in a couple of ways with higher settings. If you've noticed your cars in the menus being very jaggy and just looking like ass, it's this, and turning PP down actually improves the appearance. PP also brings its own version of ghosting; once again only really an issue if you're in chase cam, and once again actually reduced by turning PP down/off. Interestingly, this particular ghosting can't be captured in a screenshot. The AA-induced ghosting can.

  • Ground Cover and Trees behave as expected, giving you noticeable performance changes for noticeable quality changes. Imo it's worth trying to get Trees in particular up to something higher, if you can. That's one worth seeing as the setting you're trying to buy room for. If your trees in the game are weirdly clipping into the foreground, it's this setting. This setting for Trees also controls the spectators' LODs too, oddly enough, so if you notice your humans looking like Minecraft creepers, it's this.

  • For Skidmarks, Track, and most other things, I don't notice a meaningful difference.

Oh you're the man thanks for the detailed answer! I'll be fiddling with all this for sure

I'm very, very glad I saw this post. I'm running a R5 3600X & 7800 XT & was getting some annoying stutters since the latest update, despite running over 100fps average (1440p, minimum 75% Fidelity FX resolution). Already had crowds at medium, but turned post processing & car reflections to ultra low & mirrors off and now it's smooth aside from one or two predictable spots.

Also managed to get most of the other settings up to ultra with only a drop to about 85fps average... I'm happy with that. Seems that some settings interact with each other in terms of stuttering because I couldn't get past medium-high without horrendous stuttering before.

TrickyPistachio•

Glad to hear it helped!

What are your PC specs, and are you using dlss, if so, what setting?. I'm sick of people just staying 1080p and it turns out they are running at like 480p with dlss. It's very confusing.

2
IsAlwaysAngryOP•

Hm I don't think so.

Ryzen 5 3600 / RX580 8G. It's running alright, just trying to optimize a bit

2

Have you done the rally school in game?

11
IsAlwaysAngryOP•

Oh somehow I completely missed that, that'll be next!

11
wroooooooooom•

Oh this Will definitely be a boost for you!

2

Lmao if you think the brakes are bad in this one you should try DR 2.0.

9

DR 2.0 is like driving on ice lol

It's so fun because I love sliding around but at the same time it's nice to have a slightly more grounded game like this to come to.

Rally is a very different driving style compared to typical circuit type driving. On tarmac there are similarities, but on loose surface the entire approach changes along with your inputs.

If you go to the Dirtfish YouTube page, there are some good instructional videos that talk about the different aspect of driving on loose surface.

Try the rally school off the main menu. Tbh I wish they'd put more things in like the gran turismo licence challenges. I like a quick challenge.

Imo the best guide you can find today for rallying has to be the tutorial of dirt rally 1

For beginners i recommend you check out the 60s FWD class until you learn the reactions of weight transfer on loose surface.

This brought a chuckle to me as well as I had the same issue. Quick tips:

Brake WAY sooner than you are used to. like half a second.

Keep your revs up, just like in circuit racing, but in rally it is for TRACTION more than exit speed. Be in a gear that the tires can dig in and not spin.

Really listen to and learn co-driver pace notes, and DO what they say.

Beyond quick tips, rally is a momentum management exercise at its core. the surfaces and environments are so dynamic that you cannot apply circuit racing principles as you have discovered, even on tarmac surfaces beyond the basics.

You build momentum in straights and wide turns, and spend some in tighter turns. The more momentum you have at any given time, the more choices you have for either speed or power through turns. There are times on tarmac where clutch in and using just momentum to navigate a turn is faster.

Report back on your progress please.

Honestly haven't seen the dirt guide, so take this with a grain of salt. If the guide has anything about driving technique (how to brake, scandi flick, steering) it will be useful. I never really watched dirt how to's and watched team o'neil's stuff on youtube, it seems to translate pretty well

You're going to be very bad and that is ok. Stick with R3 cars, and focus on staying on the road and not crashing vs trying to be fast. Speed is something you earn, not finishing a race or limping through a stage is A LOT slower than going 10mph slower and finishing. Turn off all the driver aids, turn off the visual turn indicators. The initial learning curve is steep but hot damn is it amazing when it starts to click. I've been where you are, and it's worth it!

It is very Fanny thing that in Amutomobilista2 have both, road racing and rally (cross) and both cars are very similiar feel with weight and physics. I mean if you ever had drive car IRL you can drive it in Ams2, no matter if it's race or rally car and it feels like you drive a CAR. But after Ams starting wrc and i think that "what the fuck is this physics. I have 200 hours in wrc now and i wasn't been in Ams2 in long time. Now i'm very sad and fucked up that i went there because wrc is now most of over for me. That game is so simcade and better if they had did two different physic/steering modes in game, one wheels and other pads or something.

The wheel does feel a bit jank to me. You don't happen to know of some good G920 settings do you?

lolol im in the same situation as well.

im grinding through it tho to get my bearings. tarmec stages are bits of rays of light as i can relate to it more. but I do love it tho. it is one of the most intense driving ive done in a while.

Funnily enough for me I can't drive on tarmac to save my life. It sucks driving on :p but my fav places to race are Greece, Safari Kenya(!!!!), Finland and Mexico of those I've tried so far. Had the game for 3 days now. I love Rallying!!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

telling you, the best thing you can do if you really want to learn this game or dirt. 2.0 because they're basically the same driving style... Go on YouTube and watch the old dirt 2.0 videos that are still up there... they will teach you how to properly take a turn at speed on all the road types, weight transfer while breaking, and accelerating coming out of a sharp turn... I was terrible and literally almost gave up completely until someone turn me on to those videos... you can watch the big speedometer on the lower right hand side while the guy is playing, and he also has a camera down at his feet so you can see when and just how hard he's breaking at different points and a different degree turns... I promise you after watching a couple videos... you will absolutely improve and before you know it become addicted like the rest of us

1
Valtower•

on loose surface rallying you need to do everything earlier. brake earlier, turn earlier and get on the throttle earlier than you would on tarmac or track racing.

I too got to rally games too after a lot of track racing games and while it looked hard at first, you get used to it quick

1
RooDood32•

Go slow and focus staying on the track. Build up speed. Also work on counter steering, something you’d legit prob never had to do on GT3. Helped my gameplay A LOT
