What if: Rennala was murdered?

Lore Speculation

Despite everything that happened afterwards, remember this:

Radagon truly loved Rennala.

THEORY:

  1. Queen Rennala of the Full Moon was assassinated a long, long time ago on the orders of Marika and the Nox.
  2. What the Tarnished encounters is an imperfectly reborn being brought back by the Amber Egg, an echo of Rennala's last moments before her first death.
  3. This is the inciting event for the war between the House of the Wolf and the House of the Lion.

EVIDENCE #1: Rennala

When we meet Rennala, she has the following traits:

  • She is clutching her Amber Egg, and will never let it go.
  • Other than in Ranni's illusion, Rennala never stands up.
  • Rennala is somehow mentally "broken".

Although the common belief is that Radagon's abandonment was what broke Rennala's mind, the focus of her obsession is NOT Radagon. Instead, she is obsessed with endlessly re-birthing her "sweetling".

That egg is her life.

Deduction #1: Renalla's broken nature and her inability to walk are completely consistent with someone that has died and been reborn using the Amber Egg that she clings to. She is just like her "sweetlings".

EVIDENCE #2: The "sweetlings"

  • Renalla is stuck in an endless cycle ignores her own health in favour of rebirthing her "sweetlings".
  • Except for the Tarnished, all of the sweetlings are EXACT copies of one another.
  • As stated previously, the sweetlings are all unable to walk.
  • The sweetlings exist under "mother's umbra", the shadow of the Amber Egg. Their rebirth is stated to be "imperfect" and it's heavily implied that their lives are very short. It's possible that they cannot exist away from the Amber Egg.
  • The sweetlings have a striking resemblance to Rennala herself.

Pale skin, black hair, hazel eyes: just like Rennala..

Deduction #2: Rennala isn't just re-birthing random scholars. Rennala appears to be obsessed with re-birthing a SPECIFIC PERSON.

Deduction #3: The person that Rennala is trying to re-birth is young and shares Rennala's features. Rennala is trying to re-birth a dead child of hers.

Deduction #4: If Rennala and Radagon had a FOURTH child, the child (like Radahn, Rykard and Ranni) would be a demigod.

What evidence do we have that Rennala had a fourth demigod child?

EVIDENCE #3: The Amber Egg

The Amber Egg that Radagon left for Rennala contains the Great Rune of the Unborn and allows for someone to be reborn.

Great runes are very important artifacts: you would not, for example, give a great rune to someone who you set out to ruin.

Deduction #5: If Radagon truly loved Rennala and she had been killed. It makes perfect sense for Radagon to use the Amber Egg to revive her.

Deduction #6: The rebirth offered by the Amber Egg is imperfect. Rennala is a broken shell of how she used to be and will die without the egg.

Deduction #7: After countless attempts to bring the "real" Rennala back Radagon, heartbroken would have been forced to abandon her to ensure that the Carian Wars would not begin again.

The Amber Egg was left as a token of his undying love.

Marika had won.

EVIDENCE #4: The Great Rune of the Unborn

  • With the (possible) exceptions of Messmer and Melina every child of Marika or Radagon acquired a great rune.
  • If Radagon and Rennala had a fourth child, it is probable that they would also eventually acquire a great rune.
  • The Great Rune of the Unborn is named as the great rune "of the Unborn".

Deduction #8: Rennala's fourth demigod child was a UNBORN. Rennala was pregnant when she was killed.

EVIDENCE #5: The Fingerslayer Blade

The description of the blade reads:

"The hidden treasure of the Eternal City of Nokron; a blade said to have been born of a corpse.

This blood-drenched fetish is proof of the high treason committed by the Eternal City and symbolizes its downfall.

Cannot be wielded by those without a fate, but is said to be able to harm the Greater Will and its vassals."

From the description, we know that:

  1. The blade was "born of a corpse".
  2. The blade is able to harm the Greater Will and its vassals.
  3. The blade is "blood-drenched".
  4. The blade is proof of "high treason" committed by Nokron.
  5. The blade "cannot be wielded by those without a fate".
  6. The blade is linked to Nokron's "downfall".

Note that the blade is said to have been "born of a corpse".

FromSoft frequently refers to the manga "Berserk". Incidentally, the main character of the manga, Guts was ALSO "born of a corpse". Guts was born from the hanging corpse of his mother.

Deduction #9: The Fingerslayer Blade was not "fashioned" from a corpse, it was literally "born" of a corpse. Their mother was dead by the time they were born. This is why it is "blood-drenched".

The Fingerslayer Blade is very similar to the Sacred Relic Sword, which was created from Radagon's body and wielded by the Elden Beast.

Deduction #10: Just as the Sacred Relic Sword was made from a god, the Fingerslayer Blade was made from a DEMIGOD. This might explain why it is able to harm the Greater Will and its vassals.

"High treason" is the crime of disloyalty against one's monarch. Killing your Queen would DEFINITELY be high treason.

Deduction #11: The Nox had a hand in killing Queen Rennala and the Fingerslayer Blade was their prize.

The need for someone to have a "fate" to wield the Fingerslayer Blade is noteworthy. Almost everything existence has a fate, even inanimate objects and yet the blade NEEDS someone with a fate to wield it. It's almost as if the blade has NO FATE OF ITS OWN.

How can this be?

In the real world, those that believe in fate and fortunes often also believe that the stars can dictate your fate. This is the case in-game as well, as they say "stars alter the fate of the Carian royal family".

Relevantly, those that believe in astrology believe that your fate is dictated by the position of the stars AT THE VERY MOMENT OF YOUR BIRTH. If this is the case, someone who is UNBORN has no fate.

Deduction #12: The Fingerslayer Blade was made from an unborn demigod, pulled by the Nox from Renalla's cooling corpse.

When looking at the Fingerslayer Blade, please also note that, unlike the Sacred Relic Sword, the Fingerslayer Blade has a BREAK in it.

If the blade portion of the artifact are the leg's of the demigod it was created from, then it appears that the demigod's legs were still INCOMPLETE when they were pulled from Rennala's corpse.

Any attempts by Rennala to re-birth her child a likely to result in "sweetlings" with legs that are imcomplete.

Deduction #13: The reason the "sweetlings" cannot walk is because they are Rennala's attempts to re-birth a demigod whose legs never had the chance to fully develop.

(NOTE: Regarding the blade symbolising Nokron's downfall: Nokron's ambitions will be MASSIVELY de-railed as a result of this crime. It will take them thousands of years before their plans for Sellia can be reinitiated.)

CONCLUSION

  1. For reasons that will not covered here, Marika and the Nox (possibly with Seluvis' help and Bloodhound Knight Darriwil disguised as Blaidd) murdered a pregnant Rennala and tore out the unborn demigod.
  2. In his desperation, Radagon used the Amber Egg in an attempt to revive her, but she was a broken shell of her former self. (C.f.: What happened to Khal Drogo when Daenerys' attempted to cure him.)
  3. The reborn Rennala would do nothing by attempt again and again to re-birth the child that was taken from her.
  4. Eventually accepting that his wife was irretrievably lost, Radagon finally answered Marika's summons.
  5. The unborn demigod became the Fingerslayer Blade.

FURTHER IMPLICATIONS

  • The members of the Carian royal family (Radagon, Radahn, Rykard and Ranni) would each eventually find out that their Queen had been assassinated on the orders of the Golden Lineage (Marika, Godwyn, Mogh and Morgott).
  • The House of the Wolf would not forget the crimes of the House of the Lion.
