Welcome back to episodes 16-18. Please be generous with spoiler tags with content beyond ep 18, as well as content from the related shows Blood of Youth and Dashing Youth (for friends who have yet to watch it).
Buckle up - it's a dense set of episodes and I am naturally long-winded. ⚠️Note: some events are slightly out of order to make the post easier to read! ⚠️
Curtains down
We reopen with Su Muyu's triumphant prison break. Yi Bu realises that he has underestimated Anhe, but he's also hosting a surprise guest. Hell yeah Mu Zizhe, I'm so glad you're not dead yet!
We cut between a series of battles:
- the old Chancellor stalling Zhuo Qing at the Imperial Mausoleum - they engage in a verbal joust and we get some context on the eunuchs serving at the mausoleum
- Muyu vs Xie Zaiye the archer - a more straightforward fight - which quickly becomes the new Anhe leadership vs the old Shadow Sect elders
- Mu Ciling vs Mu Zizhe - chaos vs refined elegance
- and the distraction fights: Xie family vs Shadow Sect, Prince Langya vs Su Zhe
Mu Ciling and Mu Zizhe have a gorgeous fight that culminates in Mu Zizhe's eventual loss. We get a flashback showing young Zizhe and Ciling's philosophical divergence in answer to their master's question: "Why do you live?"
Zizhe/Ciling, Muyu/Changhe - they all pursue power via strength, but is it better to live for the sake of an individual or an organisation? Ciling's answer in the present is that everything is meaningless and "Only my existence has my own meaning".
The elders' reactions during the conversation suggest that the relationship between Anhe & Shadow Sect (& their mysterious backers) runs deeper than we originally suspect.
Elder Xie challenges them: "Do you think that the relationship can be severed by you two Nameless?" Muyu replies: "凭我足以 I alone am enough" - love the confidence of this man, but Changhe gives him a look and I am very interested to know what that means.
Muyu shares his dream for the Other Shore - to let the Anhe members walk in the sunlight, with dignity and with a place to truly belong. The Sect elders seem to be moved and impressed, but it's a feint. Muyu lets them leave alive, which is probably a mistake, but he does it as proof of his desire & vision for change.
Muyu and Changhe have a short conversation before Yi Bu arrives. Changhe automatically defers to Muyu's natural leadership, before remembering his position as the Patriarch. Is that the sound of a small seed of resentment germinating?
Inside Wanjuan Tower, a devastated Muyu finds his answer
Shen Zaiye Xie Zaiye was indeed tasked by the elders to assassinate Muyu, but Muyu vanishes (to get Changhe's dossier?). Zaiye figures that Muyu deliberately showed him a weakness to test him/tempt him to action.
Unfortunately, Changhe's fight with Yi Bu is offscreen :( is this because >!he gets so many fights in Blood of Youth!<? As current Yi Bu reminisces his regrets and losses, we get flashbacks of Young Yi Bu growing up under the heavy weight of paternal dreams and expectations.
With Yi Bu's death, Changhe obtains the real pawnshop token, and perhaps a cautionary tale for his leadership of Anhe. The Shadow Sect stepped into the light by taking on an alternative identity (the household of the Imperial Father-in-Law), but it also lost itself in the process.
Muyu hands over Changhe's dossier to him, but Changhe destroys it without reading (damn I really wanted to know what was in it!). He is only looking forward to tomorrow.
There's a short, cute breather where we get some CP scenes (Muyu/BHH, Mu Qingyang/Xuewei).
On the royal front
The First Prince and the General are disappointed by the Sect's destruction, but the Prince also knows it will strengthen the emperor's distrust of Prince Langya, and plans for more moves.
Emperor Mingde and young Jin Xuan the eunuch (BOY - the emperor played by the son) are also discussing the night's events, and the actions of a mystery prince - most likely Prince Langya.
Prince Langya indicates his belief in Changhe & Muyu's ability to enact change, and his willingness to lend them a hand. He also believes that they have shed their chains and only have people's opinions and prejudices left to fight, but I'm guessing he's wrong in this respect.
Shen Zaiye Xie Zaiye brings word to the First Prince that the 3 Shadow Sect Families will place their allegiances with him. First Prince reveals that he's the one who supplied the dossier in Muyu's compartment, more detailed than the previous version destroyed by Yi Bu.
The gang make an Irish goodbye from Tianqi City. They discuss their dreams outside the gates.
Homeland
Muyu shares his heart-breaking discoveries with XZY. Anhe was sent to destroy Wujian City, and he was deliberately kept alive and nurtured by the Su family due to his affinity for swords.
Su Xiemo gives more context - it was an assignment from Soul Reapers' Hall, with an unprecedented deliberate clean-up following the mission, because a slip-up revealed the identity of the employer (Wushuang City, who coveted Wujian City's sword manuals).
Muyu declines to take revenge on Xiemo and the other survivors - he thinks it is only right to pursue the true culprit, and wants to honour the old Patriarch's intention behind the creation of Homeland (new lives for the retired assassins).
Nan'an City
Su Zhe teases BHH about her marriage and gives his stamp of approval for Muyu. BHH very sensibly recognises that Muyu is cold at heart LOL and states her preference for Changhe (I AM CACKLING!!!! Girl after my own heart!). Changhe and Xiao Zhaoyan turn up in the middle of the conversation. He catches on and turns the joke back on BHH by introducing XZY as Muyu's "childhood sweetheart" 青梅竹马.
Muyu visits Ji Ruofeng (master of Baixiao Hall, future master to Xiao Se), who has been tailing him. Muyu has noticed that his dossier was written on new paper. JRF authenticates it and untangles the First Prince's plot - the information has become a way for someone to make use of Muyu again.
Muyu's bright eyes, reading the name of the apothecary - it's 鹤 for her and 雨 for him
BHH asks him to pay half the rent since it's half his name LOL. Muyu shares that he's brought XZY out of Homeland because he thinks she will be safer with BHH and Su Zhe.
Meanwhile, Changhe has gone on a shopping spree to redecorate "our home" with things they like. HELP ME!! My heart can't take this.
We close with the launch of the new Heyu Apothecary and the emergence of a new side quest - making the apothecary flourish in the competitive market of Nan'an City!
Thoughts & questions
So much food for thought here - I'll answer my own in a comment below!
- What was your favourite moment of the 3 episodes?
- Which fight was the most engaging for you?
- What do you think of the parallels? We have Shadow Sect // Anhe (or Yi Bu // Changhe), Zizhe & Ciling // Muyu & Changhe, and going back even further there's Mu Mingce & Kewen // Muyu & Changhe.
- What emerging themes have you noticed?
