Ning’an and Hong Ye Go on Vacation

Xiao Yao continues her quest to net a few of our demon lord’s precious teardrops by reading him The Butterfly Lovers. Every time she opens her mouth, Hong Ye nods off.

What’s significant here is the their relationship has progressed to a point where Hong Ye is coming into her room at will. And faster than you can say Cupid’s arrow, the two lovebirds are cuddling on the rooftop watching the sunset. And when the Feiyu Guard discovers that their princess has been harboring the demon king, the demon king simply takes the princess out of the palace for a much needed R&R.

Upon hearing Xiao Yao wishing that plum blossoms never wilt, he puts a plum blossoms mark on her neck.

Hum…in this day and age I think that’s like reaching at least 3rd base. It would seem that our demon king is an easy catch.

It’s nice watching the pair being so carefree and just enjoying themselves without carrying the burden of the world on their shoulders.

In the meantime, Emperor Ning’an is giving his Feiyu Guards one month to bring the princess back. Why do the father daughter have the same name?

Ning’an and Hong Ye Play Detective

Ever the kind-hearted princess, Ning’an/Xiao Yao can’t help but try to get Hong Ye to put aside his animosity towards humans. Ironically, that’s when people around them start screaming that demons are on the loose eating people again.

Death at the Doctor’s Office - A doctor’s wife has been killed. The killer is the doctor’s employee who suddenly went crazy. Therefore, he must have been possessed by a demon.

Xiao Yao is able to solve this crime pretty quickly. It turns out the good doctor has been giving his employee Xiao Liu medicine that causes insomnia and hallucinations. He then locks his wife and Xiao Liu in the same room, knowing what his employee will do in the unstable state. He did all this because he’s having an affair with his wealthy father-in-law’s concubine and his wife found out.

Mystery of the Missing Brides - A young man’s bride goes missing on their wedding night. A demon must have absconded with the poor woman. How else would you explain the blood left in the wedding chamber?

For this mystery Xiao Yao too is able to deduce the sordid truth easily. Even though the bridal chamber is a mess, all the valuables the bride brought over as part of her dowry is still neatly stored. So this clearly this is a conspiracy perpetrated by the young man and his family to get their hands on the bride’s money. But where is the missing bride?

https://preview.redd.it/96jzzjr3pgbg1.jpg?width=2419&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=895b4929d05535773c29131e7102466765301fa7

This mystery is actually a little twistier than Xiao Yao anticipated. First, the young man’s family didn’t kill the bride. The bride wanted to pursue a life of cultivation but her family wouldn’t agree. So she struck a deal with the young man’s family - her dowry for her freedom.

https://preview.redd.it/75l90j08pgbg1.jpg?width=2732&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ff824ad9b9577c39b164e2e61901166a3f2b2d2

The 2nd twist is that the young man and his family is actually a family of chipmunk demons. The Jins were cultivating in the woods when the humans invaded their home. The son Xiao Jin was purchased as a pet for a rich family. By the time the parents found the son, he has forgotten all about his past as a demon.

So Hong Ye and Xiao Yao help him regain his memories by reuniting him with the Ah Tai, the boy (now a young man) who kept him as a pet. Ah Tai initially doesn’t remember him but eventually did. And Xiao Yao won a wager she made with Hong Ye, when she asserted that sometimes sincerity will not be met with betrayal, even if the parties involved are humans.

Hong Ye offers to help the Jins settle down in the Demon Valley. Will we actually get to see a Demon Valley that actually has…adults? Be still my beating heart…

So what is the purpose of this arc? Is it to show that when it comes to relationship between the demons and the humans, nothing is black or white? With the murderous doctor, you’ve got a man who pins his crimes on the demons. But with the Jins, you’ve got demons who demonize their own kind to make money because demon’s reputation is already in the toilet. One more won’t break the bank.

And of course, the friendship between Ah Tai and Xiao Jin helps Xiao Yao demonstrate that humans and demons can be friends, but to Hong Ye, their eventual parting drives home the fact that humans and demons are destined to live apart from each other.

Back in the Demon Valley, 100 BXY

Xiao Yao is introduced to the teacher at the school and Xiao Ming. Hong Ye goes to meet with the elders at Youning Cave. And we finally get to see…5 adults in Demon Valley! I guess we can rename it More-Than-A-Dozen-Demons Demon Valley now

We also get to find out why Xiao Ming and Xiao Mu share the same body. According to Xiao Ming, they were 2 in a litter of 9. While going through tribulations one day, Xiao Mu scarified himself saving Xiao Ming. Xiao Ming manages to hold down to a wisp of Xiao Mu’s soul. From then on, Xiao Ming is Xiao Mu and Xiao Mu is Xiao Ming

Hong Ye’s Origins

It seems that no one knows where Hong Ye came from or what his true form is.

🧽Rumor: He jumped out of a rock.

🧽Rumor: He is the love child of Tian Yao and Yan Hui He is the descendant of ancient dragons.

🧽Fact: He inherited the demon throne from the last demon king. But his spiritual powers were so weak that he had to sever all his meridians and rebuilt them.

🧽Speculation: Xiao Ming says that Hong Ye can’t be older than 10,000 years. But didn’t Qiong Qi, Ao He, and Teng She say that they have been imprisoned in Yunmeng Lake for 10,000 years? If they knew Hong Ye from before, he must be older than that. This probably has something to do with his origins.

Hong Ye Gets Punished

Hong Ye is quite the politician, NOT. Actually, I am surprised that he is able to keep the demon throne for as long as he has. With Hei Wu already poisoning the elders’ minds about Hong Ye getting too friendly with the humans, Hong Ye traipses in and advocates for peace with the humans, playing right into Hei Wu’s hands.

https://preview.redd.it/g0cuzlwdpgbg1.jpg?width=2732&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3b2204849f42230d5c393a11a814ddf12a15427

I mean, not that he’s wrong. I just feel like there must be a more diplomatic way to go about it.

To prove that Hong Ye is working with colluding with the humans, Hei Wu asks Wu Huan to bring a Feiyu Guard he captured as a witness. Unbeknownst to him though, Xiao Yao has found the Feiyu Guard tied to a tree along with 3 human children. The 3 children are meant to be offered up as sacrifice to the gods. So Xiao Yao releases them. And Xiao Ming is taken to Hong Ye and the elders in the Youning Cave, where he covers for Xiao Yao and says that he ate the humans.

Hei Wu then accuses Xiao Ming of killing the witness to shut him up, and Hong Ye offers to be punished in Xiao Ming’s stead. For Xiao Ming’s transgressions, Hong Ye gets struck by lightning.

Hong Ye, suffering beautifully. And why does it always have to be lightning?

Oh, and before Hong Ye takes Xiao Yao back to the human realm, we finally get a verbalized love confession, when Hong Ye tells Xiao Yao that he likes her and asks if she feels the same way. It’s about time I say!

“I like you. I just don’t know if you feel the same way.” “I do.”

Hong Ye and Ning’an Becomes Engaged

When Hong Ye takes Ning’an back to the palace, he finds the Feiyu Guards waiting to capture them.

So much for the guard’s sworn oath to speak to the emperor on behalf of the demons.

To stop them from hurting Hong Ye, Xiao Yao even trots out the classic costume drama “I am pregnant with his baby” trump card, but that only hardens the guard’s resolve to capture them both, as the princess is clearly now a member of the enemy tribe.

But it’s okay, because a couple of Feiyu Guards is no match for the might of the demon monarch. Hong Ye is able to pull a quicksilver and take away all the guards’ weapons before they even knew what was happening.

https://preview.redd.it/fdz0erfopgbg1.jpg?width=2732&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d88e222bd23a9988663b795e0faaec58666f662c

And that’s when the emperor asks to see both Hong Ye and Ning’an in his chambers where he puts on a masterclass in emotional manipulation. He apologizes to Ning’an for neglecting her all these years, but then dropped the bombshell that Ning’an’s mother was a demon who died while giving birth to her. Since everyone believes Ning’an to be unlucky, the only way he could protect her was keeping her locked away.

He then asks Hong Ye if he’s willing to marry Ning’an. As Ning’an/Xiao Yao smiles at Hong Ye, all I can think of is…how can Xiao Yao not know what’s happening here? That the slimy emperor is setting a trap for Hong Ye?

And then the emperor says: “However, I have one more request. I hope you can find the Kunlun mirror.” There. Xiao Yao has got to be aware of what’s happening now, correct?

And with that, I think we have finally come full circle. We will finally find out the truth behind what happened on their wedding date. And for the first time since I started this series, I am actually invested in our main couple and find myself both looking forward to and also dreading what will happen next.

Other Tidbits

Best Pickup Line

“Even in the bitter cold, its fragrance still spread everywhere. It reminds me of you.” OK. Cal me jaded. The line is good. But as a princess, how much “bitter cold” could she have experienced?

Best Pickup Line Runner Up

Hong Ye: “From now on, the princess will also be well protected.” Xiao Yao: “That person better not regret it.”
