hen Do You Need a Police Escort for Oversize Load LENGTH? All 48 States [2026 Guide]
Length is the most misunderstood escort trigger in oversize transport.
Unlike width and height — where most states follow a predictable
regional pattern — length rules are all over the map. Some states
require police at 100 feet. Others never require police for length
at any footage. Illinois does not require police until 200 feet.
Florida does not require police until 250 feet.
This guide breaks it all down by state.
This is Part 3 of a 5-part series. Part 1 — Width Triggers Part 2 — Height Triggers Parts 4 and 5 covering weight and combinations coming soon.
Critical Distinction: Pilot Car vs. Police Escort for Length
For width and height the civilian-to-police transition is relatively clean. For length it is not. Many states require multiple civilian pilot cars for very long loads but never require police regardless of how long the load is. Do not assume a long load needs police — check your state.
| Length | General Requirement |
|---|---|
| Up to 53' | Legal trailer length in most states. No permit. |
| 53' to 75' | Oversize permit in most states. No escort yet. |
| 75' to 100' | Pilot car(s) required in most states. No LE in most. |
| 100' to 130' | LE escort in select states (NH, IN, DE, MA Turnpike). Pilot cars everywhere else. |
| 130' to 160' | LE escort in additional states (IN, LA, ME, AR). Pilot cars elsewhere. |
| 160' to 200' | LE escort in NY, OH, PA Turnpike, UT. Pilot cars in most others. |
| Over 200' | LE escort in IL, FL at 250'. Case-by-case in most remaining states. |
Length is measured as overall combination length — bumper to bumper of the entire rig including tractor, trailer, and load. Some states measure cargo length separately. See the measurement section below.
States Where Length DEFINITIVELY Triggers LE Escort
These states have a published, hard length threshold that mandates law enforcement escort regardless of width or height:
| State | LE Escort Triggers At | Agency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Hampshire | Over 100' overall | State Police | Lowest LE length threshold in the country. State Police has discretion to waive if conditions allow. |
| Massachusetts | Over 100' on Turnpike / Over 135' on all other routes | State Police | Two-tier system — Turnpike and general state roads have different thresholds. |
| Indiana | Over 130' overall | State Police | Sharp jump — civilian pilot car starts at 110', police required at 130'. Only 20 feet between tiers. |
| Delaware | Over 120' overall | State Police | 120' is both the routine permit maximum and the LE trigger. Any load requiring special clearance above 120' gets automatic State Police. |
| Maine | 125' to 149': 1 State Police / 150'+: 2 State Police | State Police | Cross-county moves on non-interstate require State Police regardless. 3-day advance notice to Maine State Police required. |
| Louisiana | Over 125' overall | State Police | Steerable rear dolly mandatory alongside LE at 125'. New Orleans non-interstate: LE required at 90'. |
| Arkansas | Over 150' overall | State Police | Civilian escorts required from 75' to 150'. Front and rear LE at 150'+. |
| Alabama | Over 150' overall | State Troopers | Superload classification. Minimum 2 State Troopers front and rear. |
| New York | Over 160' overall | State Police | 2 to 3 police escorts depending on route type. Superload designation. |
| Ohio | Over 160' overall | State Highway Patrol | Clean, simple rule — over 160' long OR over 13' wide triggers police. |
| Pennsylvania | Over 160' on Turnpike | State Police | General state roads trigger LE by weight (201,000+ lbs), not length. Turnpike is the exception. |
| Utah | 175' to 199': 1 police + 2 civilians / 200'+: 2 police + 2 civilians | Utah Highway Patrol | Police supplements civilians, does not replace them. Tiered system unique to Utah. |
| Illinois | Over 200' overall | Illinois State Police | Highest hard LE length threshold in the country. 145' to 200' requires 3 civilian escorts first. |
| Florida | Over 250' overall | FHP or Local PD | Second highest confirmed threshold. Florida regularly handles wind blade moves — this threshold reflects that operational history. |
States Where Length Alone Does NOT Trigger LE Escort
These states have no fixed length threshold that mandates police escort. Width, height, or weight may still trigger LE — but length by itself will not:
| State | What Does Trigger LE | Pilot Car Required At |
|---|---|---|
| Arizona | Not codified for length | Over 120' |
| California | Width or height (CHP) | Over 100' to 120' depending on road |
| Colorado | Not confirmed for length | 85' mountain 2-lane / 110' flat |
| Connecticut | Width + height combined | 80' undivided / 100' divided |
| Idaho | Not confirmed | Over 120' |
| Iowa | Not by length | Over 80' to 120' with amber lights |
| Kansas | Width-based | Over 100' |
| Kentucky | Not by length | 75' on 2-lane / 110' on 4-lane |
| Maryland | Width over 16' or weight over 75 tons | Over 85' |
| Michigan | Not confirmed for length | Over 100' front / 120' front + rear |
| Missouri | Not by length | Over 90' on non-divided |
| Montana | Never — no LE required for any oversize load | Over 110' on non-interstate |
| Nebraska | Not by length | Over 100' |
| Nevada | Width over 17' or height over 16' | Over 110' |
| New Jersey | Width-based primarily | Over 100' |
| New Mexico | Width over 20' | Over 110' |
| North Dakota | Width over 18' | Over 120' |
| Oregon | Not by length | 95' on 2-lane / 120' on interstate |
| South Carolina | Width over 16' | Over 125' or overhang over 15' |
| South Dakota | Not by length — length barely triggers escorts either | Minimal requirements |
| Tennessee | Not confirmed by length | 85' to 120' depending on road |
| West Virginia | Not by length | 75' on 2-lane / 95' on 4-lane |
| Wisconsin | Not confirmed for length | Over 100' |
| Wyoming | Not confirmed for length | Width-focused |
States With Partial or Conditional Rules
| State | Rule | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Georgia | Case-by-case above escort thresholds | Standard commodity loads: LE case-by-case. Structure and building moves: mandatory police front and rear. |
| Minnesota | Centerline intrusion rule | If any part of the load crosses the centerline on an undivided road, a licensed Peace Officer must lead. This is a geometry trigger, not a fixed footage rule. Can affect loads far shorter than |
| 150'. | ||
| North Carolina | Width-triggered, not length | Width over 15' triggers NC State Highway Patrol requirement. Length alone uses civilian escorts. |
| Pennsylvania | Turnpike vs. general roads | Turnpike: 160'+ triggers police. General state roads: weight-triggered, not length. |
| Rhode Island | Building moves only | Standard commodity loads have no length LE trigger. Building and structure moves require police from each municipality traversed. |
| Texas | Case-by-case above 125' | Standard permits handle up to 125'. Above that TxDMV/TxDOT determines escort type case by case. No automatic LE trigger published. |
| Vermont | Commissioner discretion | State Police can be required but there is no fixed footage trigger. Discretionary based on conditions. |
| Washington | Per-permit negotiation | Loads over 125' become superload class and escort terms are negotiated individually in the permit approval. No automatic LE length trigger. |
How Length Is Measured
Length is more complex to measure than width or height because multiple measurements exist and states define it differently:
Overall combination length — bumper to bumper of the entire rig (tractor nose to end of load or trailer, whichever is longer). This is what most states use as the trigger measurement.
Cargo length — the load itself, not including the truck and trailer. Some states apply separate rules to cargo length independent of overall combination length.
Rear overhang — how far the cargo extends beyond the rear of the trailer. Several states have specific rules for rear overhang:
| State | Rear Overhang Rule |
|---|---|
| California | Over 30' front or rear overhang triggers pilot car |
| Mississippi | Over 15' front or rear projection triggers civilian escort |
| New York | Over 10' overhang triggers rear escort on multilane |
| North Carolina | Rear overhang over 14' triggers 1 rear civilian escort |
| Texas | Over 20' beyond the load-carrying surface requires rear flag vehicle |
| Virginia | Rear overhang over 15' from bumper triggers rear escort on all routes |
| Vermont | Over 15' overhang triggers 1 escort |
No state mandates LE escort based solely on rear overhang without other triggering dimensions. Overhang triggers civilian escorts, not police.
The 6 Biggest Length Anomalies
Indiana — the 20-foot cliff
Indiana has the sharpest jump of any state. One civilian pilot car is required starting at 110'. At 130' you suddenly need full front-and-rear State Police. There is no intermediate civilian tier between 110' and 130'. A load that is 129 feet long needs one pilot car. A load that is 131 feet needs two state troopers. Plan accordingly.
Illinois — 200 feet before police
Illinois has the highest hard LE length threshold in the country. Loads up to 145 feet use civilian escorts. Loads from 145 to 199 feet require three civilian pilot cars. Only at 200 feet do Illinois State Police become mandatory. Operators moving 180-foot loads through Illinois may be surprised to learn they need three civilian escorts but no police.
Florida — 250 feet before police
The second highest confirmed LE threshold. Florida regularly handles wind turbine blade transport and other extreme-length industrial loads, which is why the threshold is set so high. Even at 200 feet you are still in civilian escort territory in Florida.
Louisiana — New Orleans is different
Statewide, LE escort is required at 125 feet. Inside New Orleans on non-interstate roads the threshold drops to 90 feet. The city's narrow streets, tight turns, and dense traffic drove this separate rule. If your route goes through New Orleans specifically, treat it as a different state for escort planning.
Massachusetts — Two systems in one state
The Massachusetts Turnpike and the general state road network have different LE thresholds. The Turnpike triggers police at 100 feet. General state roads trigger police at 135 feet with two State Police. Applying the wrong rule to the wrong road type in Massachusetts is an easy and expensive mistake.
Montana — No LE required ever
Montana remains the only lower-48 state with zero mandatory law enforcement escort requirement for oversize loads of any dimension. You notify the state police or county sheriff of your route — they may monitor but they do not ride along. Applies to length as it does to width and height.
Multi-State Routes and Length
Length creates unique multi-state complications that width and height do not:
A 140-foot load traveling from Ohio to Illinois passes through Indiana. That route requires:
- Ohio: No LE (under 160' threshold)
- Indiana: State Police required (over 130')
- Illinois: No LE (under 200' threshold)
The same load needs police for the Indiana segment only. You must arrange Indiana State Police separately for just that portion, then release them at the border. Your civilian escorts continue through all three states.
This is why multi-state permit packages should explicitly call out each state's requirements rather than applying the most restrictive state's rules to the whole route.
Pilot Car Requirements for Length (Before LE Thresholds)
Even in states where length never triggers police, civilian pilot cars are required well before that point. General guidance:
| Length | Typical Civilian Escort Requirement |
|---|---|
| 75' to 85' | 1 rear pilot car on 2-lane roads in most states |
| 85' to 100' | 1 rear pilot car on all road types in most states |
| 100' to 110' | Front + rear pilot cars in most states |
| 110' to 125' | Front + rear in all states; some require 2 rear |
| 125' to 150' | 2 or more civilian escorts; some states add steerable dolly requirement |
| Over 150' | Maximum civilian escort configuration; LE adds in states that require it |
FAQ
Is overall combination length the same as load length?
No. Overall combination length is bumper to bumper including the tractor. Load length is just the cargo. Most state LE triggers are based on overall combination length. When in doubt, measure overall and use that.
My load is 155 feet. Do I need police?
Depends entirely on the state. You do in Alabama, Arkansas, Maine, and Louisiana. You do not in most other states until 160' or higher. Check every state on your route individually using this guide and verify with the permit office.
Does a police escort for length mean I don't need civilian pilot cars?
No. In most states police escort supplements civilian escorts, it does not replace them. Utah explicitly adds police to civilians — you need both. Check your specific permit conditions.
Indiana says 130' triggers police. Does that mean 130' exactly?
Over 130 feet. 130 feet even may or may not trigger depending on how the state interprets the rule. When you are near a threshold always verify with the Indiana permitting office. Do not assume an inch under the threshold is safe without confirmation.
What is a steerable rear dolly and why does Louisiana require it?
A steerable rear dolly is a specialized axle unit placed under the rear of a very long load that can be steered independently of the tractor. On tight turns with a 125+ foot load, the rear would otherwise swing wide and cause accidents or property damage. Louisiana mandates it alongside LE at 125' as a package requirement.
Does rear overhang count toward overall length?
Yes. If cargo extends 8 feet beyond the rear of the trailer, those 8 feet count toward overall combination length. Measure from the front of the tractor to the farthest point of the load.
