“You. I like you. What’s your name?”
“Private Möeller, sir.”
Excellent, a Marine. They circled around each other, Evan keeping an eye on biggest-punk, still on the ground but struggling to his knees. He noted with approval he hadn’t actually puked.
“I gotta admit, I’m partial to that name. Which division?”
“144th ODST, sir.”
Evan grinned even bigger. “A good unit. Glad to see they still fill it with men.” Evan charged now, simply tackling the smaller man with blinding speed. He was on top of him instantly, pummeling Möeller’s impressive core with his sledgehammer fists. Möeller gamely defended himself but Evan was relentless and he wasn’t sparing his strength. He was impressed by the kid’s hardiness. The kid’s clearly harder than he looks, and he looks pretty hard.
But everyone has their limits. In about ten seconds Möeller had enough and tapped. “Stop, sir, pant, pant, I give.”
Evan relented, a bit disappointed. He was hoping the kid would fight ‘till the bitter end but he had to respect the wisdom. This ain’t a fight worth giving everything, after all. It’s just a bet.
That left the last guy. He was trying to stand up now, a bit green ‘round the gills but determined to get on his feet. Evan respected that and let him be for a bit. But the clock was running out. “Sorry dude, I’m running out of time. My apologies.”
Evan charged and delivered an extremely painful nerve-punch to his torso, bruising his liver yet again. He screamed out in agony and fell. Evan was on him instantly, painfully pinning him. “Give, man. You’ve already shown you’re brave. Now show me you ain’t stupid.”
He tapped.
Evan looked at the time. Less than a minute. “Looks like I win kiddies.” He helped them stand up and relocate to the bench. They were all in agony. But Möeller was still grinning.
He crouched on his haunches in front of them. “So, what did we learn today?”
Möeller blurted immediately, “That you’re a badass and you’re gonna teach us how to be badasses? Sir?”
Evan was a bit nonplussed by that. But he liked the idea! “Well, hey, why not? That sounds way better than beating on helpless kids. You’ve all got game, at least a little. Send me your schedules and I’ll get a routine going. When you get good enough you can train with Max and I. Sound like a plan?”
They nodded, middle-dude a bit hesitantly. “Excellent. Now report to medical. Any of you ever ride a ‘boost?”
“I have,” said Möeller, “But only Level One.”
“How ‘bout them?”
“Ha! They’re Navy pukes, why would they?” Dirty glares from both of them.
Evan chuckled at that. “Semper Fi, my friend. Maybe you can introduce them? We’re gonna need to whip these Navy pukes into infantry shape if we’re gonna properly train. Some pain therapy would be a good start.”
He stood up and dressed. “Anyway, get yourselves cleaned up. I expect to see those schedules in my inbox by tomorrow, or next time I won’t be so gentle. Got it?”
“Yes Sir!” All three stood up at attention.
Healthy, solid material to start with. And respectful. Excellent.
“Good. Dismissed.”
Admiral Yamamoto was waiting in medical. “How was your little adventure?”
The Navy dudes were still wallowing in pain, clearly not too thrilled with the experience. Möeller, on the other hand….
“Ooo-rah, Sir! Captain is fuckin’ badass!”
Yamamoto chucked, “Language, Private. Even meant well one must never curse concerning an officer. Understand?”
He straignened up quickly, “Yes Sir. Sorry Sir.”
Chuckling again, “Good, good. Don’t worry, you’re not in trouble. Just be careful an XO or J3 doesn’t catch you, I’m sure you wouldn’t like the result.”
He made to leave but said to the sailors, “Oh, and about Evan’s offer? Take him up on it. He is one of the very best fighters amongst humankind. I can give you some videos if you like, they’re very hard to find. He is…unbelievable, and it’s beautiful to watch. What you experienced was nothing compared to what he’s capable of.
“If he’s offering to teach you, you would be a fool to decline. I will be disappointed if I find you declined on anything but a medical basis. I will ensure your schedules allow for this training. Take it seriously. I have a feeling we’ll need as many warriors as we can get in the not-distant future. Now I take my leave. Good evening, gentlemen.”
They looked at each other in wonder. What the hell did they get themselves into?
Evan returned to his home. Waiting at the door was Eldest Samatha. “What can I do for you, Eldest?”
She smiled, “What can I do for you? I’ve made my intent clear, but you rebuff me. Is there something wrong?”
*What is she—*Oh. I see. “Eldest, it would be very uncomfortable. You’re…” he gathered his thoughts, ”Venerable. I don’t know how else to put it.” He shrugged apologetically, only concerned out of politeness.
“Of course I am! I’m over [600 years old]! But you’re not thinking of this the right way.” She stripped off her shirt and Evan suddenly realized she had a glorious body. Her face is very attractive, too. Come to think of it…How had I missed this? She undulated a bit and he found himself growing aroused.
Men are so easy.
“I’ve had [centuries] to perfect my skills and hone my body. I won’t be old amongst my own kind for another [100 years]. And I’m a bit desperate, because this season will be my first age-barren. That means no mating rights, and that means I’ll work for it.”
She undulated a bit more, her movements more sensual than any exotic dancer Evan’s ever seen. He moaned, and she wasn’t even out of her bra yet!
“So how ‘bout it? [Fall] is almost over, and our [winter] is long, cold and lonely. Want to share the season with the most skilled lover on the planet?”
He opened his door and bade her enter. She ripped off his shirt, her Earth-strength still with her, and she set to work.
Evan got no sleep that night.
“Wow, this pride is an interesting social arrangement. And it’s all because of your low birthrates?”
Miriel sat in his lap at the library, enjoying the closeness. He sat on his portable folding stool, having already destroyed one of the library’s chairs.
“Yup. We’re receptive for only a few seconds each season, and then only after much stimulation.” She grinned at that, and Max hugged her a bit harder with his arm. His other was perusing books and display screens.
“But that’s a problem, isn’t it? That plus your male shortage…how often do you clutch?”
“Once or twice in a lifetime, if we’re lucky.”
“So a very lucky girl will have 48 children in 600 years? And most only get a few?”
“Yes. Most clutches are less than the maximal 24. We still don’t know why. We were hoping your people’s more advanced biological sciences can help.”
Max thought about this. Having an ally with such an abysmal birth rate didn’t bode well. “Absolutely. It’s clear this needs to go at the top of my wish list.”
“What next?” He snuggled up to her, nuzzling his head to hers. This was purely affectionate, their sexuality temporarily sated since the shower. They found the closeness enhanced the link’s power, and as they studied it slowly grew to the same epic strength they felt at the peak of their forest adventure.
At least, the parts they remember.
“How ‘bout some folklore? I would love to learn some of yours.”
They studied and shared folk tales, Miriel astounded by how fast and how deeply Max learned everything she presented. Evan’s study-hell served him well. He’s so intelligent! I think he may be superior to me!
She made a note to administer a standardized test, or maybe find his Human-equivalent results.
Max was also impressed with her speed. He had but to present a fact once and she remembered it perfectly and asked pertinent questions almost immediately. I caught me a smart girl!
She felt a brief twinge of appreciation and arousal from him but it faded quickly. She smiled and let it pass. But now she stood up, Max’s expression slightly disappointed he wasn’t holding her anymore. And yet he’s so simple and pure! “Let me go get something from the special collection.”
She left and returned with a large, musty old tome. It was written in a script Max didn’t recognize. “This is in a very old written form. It’s much like modern Quenya but the forms are different. Let me show you.”
Max suddenly wondered, “Why do you know this? What was your, uh, area of study? I’m not sure what the equivalent concept is.”
“My chosen caste is [lore-seeker]. Eldest says the best translation may be ‘librarian-historian.’ ”
She felt another brief but powerful twinge of arousal. She grinned at him and he was now a bit embarrassed. What’s that all about?
He grabbed her and returned her to his lap, hugging tightly and nuzzling again. “Sorry, I just can’t get enough of you! Now show me how to read this.”
The studied for the rest of the evening. They returned home, still sated, and curled up together for a long, deep sleep.
“That’s another probe, sir. They’ve becoming very interested in Quenaris, it would seem.”
“Indeed,” said Yamamoto. “What about Earth?”
“Nothing so far. Our current SWAG^1 is they don’t know the connection between Humans, Quenaris and Earth yet. Maybe. We just don’t know anything.”
“Right. Keep an eye on it. Next coverage gap we may want to take stealthing precautions. Draw up plans for that.”
“Yessir.”
Yamamoto sighed and headed back to his wardroom. Time to brief Chief Serra.
^1 Scientific Wild-Ass Guess. Yup.
I enjoyed that. Also, I may steal SWAG for future works.
It's an oldie but a goodie. Been in military circles since FUBAR.
As a "Navy Puke" I can attest that I would not last long against a well trained Marine, that being said, If I wasnt pulling first in Mario Kart against him I would be very surprised. Marines, big and tough, but clever ain't their thing
Heh, as an Air Force guy who's had lots of cross-service exposure...this is accurate.
Most ain't used to applying their intelligence outside of their skills. But you gotta love 'em, 'cuz they're enthusiastic about everything!
