What. I don't... fucking what did I just read? A man complaining women's clothing is made for men's proportions? He's complaining that when fat women wear straight sized clothing it stretches and it's the pant's fault? I'm honestly fucking baffled right now.

135
R3cognizer•

I don't know where the fuck he was shopping, but I'm a trans guy. Pre-transition, I wore a size 20 women's pants before I switched to wearing XXL 46 men's pants. I now wear size L 36 (38-40 waist) since I lost weight, and I'm pretty sure that I'd fit easily into a size 16, maybe even smaller.

No, women's clothing really isn't made for men's proportions, but we're really not that different. You can't expect a 6' tall broad-shouldered woman who weighs 175 lbs to wear a size 8 either.

39
TheRealAlfredAdler•

As another transman (though still pre-transition, sigh), I'd like to add that men's clothes aren't made for women's proportions either. Even though I'm 5' 1" and a normal weight, I have to go up a size or two in men's clothes just to accommodate my stupid hips.

And to be honest, I always think it's odd how many FAers cry when clothes don't fit right but dammit if I'm not getting all pissy and upset over how weirdly men's clothes fit my current proportions. I won't go insisting the clothing industry change for me or anything, but it doesn't make me feel any better about not being able to transition for at least another 2 years.

But, feelz aside (I don't know why I brought that up), this guy was deluded to think his body composition as a full grown man wouldn't affect what size women's clothes he wore. The sizes just aren't transferable.

17

As a non trans guy, I can say that your hips aren't stupid and will probably look great post transition. Look at Marilyn Monroe, she wasn't plus size like these FAs claim but her hips sure as fuck didn't lie. Of my post trans friends, I'd say the best looking ones were the bigger hips ones. Just my two cents.

3
TheRealAlfredAdler•

Well that's nice to hear. I'm really short so anything about my physique that will improve post-transition is a huge plus. Thanks.

3
Iroshizuku•

I'm confused. Trans man means they are transitioning from woman to man.

3
ElEhZedSchrödinger's shitlord•

Another trans guy here, mid-transition. This guy is simply making shit up. I wear a S or a M in men's clothing, and I was a size 8-10 in women's. I call bullshit on a men's medium and a women's 20 being the same size. No way.

3
TheRealAlfredAdler•

Yeah, I have to agree. And did you notice the one picture of him in the article is very conveniently positioned at a myspace angle? You can just barely make out the top of the dress he's holding up. But it's mostly his face.

I wonder if he's got a lot of visceral fat or something.

2
Fade_0Genetic condition of loving my body!•

So am I.

Something about never ripping pants being an accomplishment? How the fuck do you even rip pants through normal use? (excluding wear and tear)?

32
R3cognizer•

I am ashamed to admit that I have ripped a couple pairs before. When I was at planetary status, my thighs would rub together, which creates a lot of friction on the seams between the legs. I ripped a shitty pair of thin-as-fuck Lane Bryant jeans that were a size too small after less than a month when I went ice skating and fell at an awkward angle. My knees survived thankfully, but the seams of those shitty jeans did not.

12
Purpl342•

This happens to me. I wear a size zero. It wasn't because you were fat. It was because your thighs touched. I've only had them rip once but thin spots always happen. I also wear loose jeans so it's not like the fabric is stretched too tight.

15
[deleted]•

There was a thread around one of these fat people subs and everybody was in shock that people can rub holes through pants. The humblebrag was everywhere. I wear the shit out of jeans. I walk a lot and I used to work factory jobs. I don't have fat thighs (I get fat mainly in my stomach and arms unfortunately) and after a few years of use, I get worn crotch spots. It has happened to me sizes 6 through 10 and with jeans from American Eagle, Express, Gap, TJMaxx, and Buckle. Some people just get more use out of their jeans. Some people wash their jeans more. Friction does that sort of thing.

4
Belching_princess•

Don't worry I'm nowhere near planet staus (bmi 22-23) and I rip through the thighs on my skinny jeans sometimes. It happens - no shame necessary. Your thighs rub together when you walk that's all.

9
sweetnessalive•

Yeah, I don't get the obsession with non touching thighs. Some people have smaller pelvises, that's all.

5
Apocalypte•

Same here. Normal BMI + muscular legs is a combination for murdering skinny jeans!

5
[deleted]•

I've managed to wear out pairs of cheap jeans like Wranglers due to being fat, just from the fabric slowly being worn away by thighs constantly moving against each other. But then again, that's after like a year of literally daily use.

I've torn jeans and stuff by squatting or crouching too quickly, but I'm not sure how much of that is related to being fat versus just shoddy materials and poor design.

5
NormativeTruth•

"...that's after like a year of literally daily use" What? When do you wash them and hang them to dry so?

2
Fade_0Genetic condition of loving my body!•

Oh man :(

3
bretcoxohgodno•

Can confirm. When I was chunky ALL my pants died via chub rub.

1
QueenSkittlezHealth is just, like, your opinion man•

I don't know. Most of my pants are too big now. Wearing too small things is uncomfortable, if you're ripping through quality clothing then you got the wrong damn size

11
NotJustA1L•

Barbell lifters have problems with the thighs of a lot of pants. I'm still kind of inexperienced but I noticed when I started lifting my pants got very tight in the thigh, and a friend of mine who played division I football frequently tears dress pants through normal use because his thighs are huge due to lifting.

On the other hand, that still wouldn't cause you to tear yoga pants.

2
Fade_0Genetic condition of loving my body!•

Not through general use, though. I doubt I could find a way to rip yoga pants other than ripping them.

2
NotJustA1L•

He ripped his pants in court, poor guy.

But you're right, yoga pants are another story.

4
YamaMaya1•

I have ripped through many jeans just because my thighs touch. These were mostly low quality wal mart jeans though.

Also: A size 20 in women's is NOT A men's medium. As a former size 20 with an actual hourglass figure (with my waist being almost a foot smaller than my hips/chest)... I was wearing L-XL t-shirts depending on the brand, and none were loose around the stomach/shoulders. Judging solely by that picture and the assumption that it's a size 20 as he said he held up for comparison... he's fooling himself if he thinks he wears a medium.

4
petisarc•

I can't tell if it's satire or not.

4
kellyev2006•

This has to be the dumbest thing I've ever read. A medium sized man is not going to be the same size and shape as a medium sized woman. It has nothing to do with fat shaming or unfair expectations for women. Men and women are just shaped different. Don't try to make some big statement about a part of society you clearly have no experience with.

75
wombatzilla•

It would be like expecting to be the same size in the "juniors" section and the "women's" section. Ridiculous.

26
kellyev2006•

I work in retail. I once had a woman hold up a pair of little girls size 10 pants and ask me if they were a girls 10 or a ladies 10. I couldn't believe she couldn't tell the difference.

12
wombatzilla•

Was she huge? My mom is huge and doesn't wear underwear so she doesn't understand that the underwear sizes run differently from pants sizes. No clue at all.

It's kinda stupid that they do though. I'm a 9 underwear but like 14 pants. Wtf? Why is consistency so much to ask?

3
ravioligirl•

Target yoga pants are very generous as well. I'm a size 6 and wear a small, I'm a medium everywhere else. My husband, 36 waist large top, tried my yoga pants before for laughs and has been able to wear them. This guy must not know how to pants.

10
carolina8383•

That was my first thought, too. You want to try lululemon but go to target??? Way different sizing, buddy.

12
paperthinskin•

Serious. I wear a medium women's top but an XS men's top. I don't even know where to begin with someone who thinks a men's medium = a women's medium.

6
Chillin_Erry_Day•

A "medium" size man will be way too small to fit into a women's size 20.

6
PrimeMinisterOwl•

So because womens sizes don't fit men, thin privilege or something?

The more stuff I read from this guy the more I think he still has fat on the brain. He's an idiot.

33
zdhR7b•

His name is "the anti-Jared". His sole purpose is to push the fat agenda.

He's also a clown for being upset at the size.

"Twenty?!"

Who cares what it's called. Here's a test:

Are the pants huge? If so, lose some fucking weight. If not, who cares about the size label.

If pants fit and they're size "203" I couldn't care less. They fit.

This is why those woman wear pants that are too small, they're upset at the mere size name.

17
Noywtktubblywubblie!•

Just throwin' this out there.

Actually went and googled the size chart for Hanes (cause they have men's and women's). A men's medium is chest 38-40in, waist 32-34in, women's for those same measurements would be a L (going by the chest) or an XL (going by the waist). Avenue jeans, size 20 are 39.5-41in waist, and 49-50.5in hips), and Lulumon's largest size (XL or size 12 women's) is 32.5in waist - 43in. hips.

Either he's not a "medium" or he's built awfully strangely, imo.

20
thirdhamOPLet the beetus hit the floor, LET THE BEETUS HIT THE FLOOOOORR!!•

Could be a Walmart medium. My bf lost a bunch of weight, still 200lbs though and fits Walmart's small.

11
Noywtktubblywubblie!•

Walmart is incredibly horrible at vanity sizing. I'm 315lbs and got a 3x top from there.... it's so big that I literally can't wear it. It's so wide at the shoulders that it will fall off if I put my arms at my sides. I returned it for a 1x... which is still baggy (but the xl doens't fit... go figure!)

3

That actually makes sense. I'm 5'9" and 160 pounds, and I bought an children's XL Chiefs jersey from Walmart, and it fits perfectly. If there was a child my size I'd be very frightened.

3

That's weird. I'm a 5'10" woman at 150 lbs and fit Walmart's medium shirts and am size 8-10.

2

I think it varies by piece.

1
archaeologistbarbie•

Their danskin athletic stuff has been normal-ish, but I think that's the only stuff I have from there besides a couple of juniors tees that I work out in. (That are from like 5 years ago, so I'm not sure how sizing may have changed since!)

Ninja edit: typo!

1
UCgirl•

I'm wondering if his legs were really muscular, driving up the size of the clothing you would need. Also, he says he has "broad shoulders" so in order for that dress to fit, it has to make it around his ribcage and shoulders. That will drive the size up.

3
ajswdf•

TIL men are bigger than women?

19
Fade_0Genetic condition of loving my body!•

Sooooooo does this person think that their sizes should be bigger? Are they against vanity sizing or do they support it? Are they buying men's clothing?

And touting not ripping pants as something to be proud of?

17
thirdhamOPLet the beetus hit the floor, LET THE BEETUS HIT THE FLOOOOORR!!•

Haha who the fuck knows. Lulu doesn't carry more larger than 12 because they barely even sell 12s. They also stopped carrying the 0 size. Most of the sizes sold are 4-8. They have 2 and 0 on the smaller end and 10 and 12 on the larger end. And one size up can fit alright still, so technically at a size 14, you can get a 12 and it be alright. It's when you're well into plus sizes, the material isn't meant for that. 12s aren't restocked because they are barely sold (one of the links in the article was complaining about not having many 12s). Why would they dish out more material and time making sizes that don't sell... And why can't people buy other brands, many other stores don't carry plus sizes but Lulu always gets shit on for it.

11
UCgirl•

I'm with you on this. I can't fit into Lulu right now. I don't blame the company and I'm not angry about it. They target in shape active people. But man if it's not one of my goals. For awhile, they were the only ones making "stylish" workout clothing. But now other places have stepped up their stle game. I still want to be able to fit into lulu b/c I want to be full on shitlord.

3
energylegz•

Every time I go in there (which is more than I like to admit) the sale rack is nothing but 12's. Lulu knows their audience. The majority of fat women might buy a pair or two, but not the same quantity as someone who is working out 6 times/week and is probably thin.

3
thirdhamOPLet the beetus hit the floor, LET THE BEETUS HIT THE FLOOOOORR!!•

I love their stuff but I'm a shitlord that fits their 4-6 sizes. Never on sale.

Yep, it's very fatlogic-licious. And fatlogic-riffic. The author is clearly a rare male FA. In what world does a dude expect to fit into same size woman's clothing? Women store weight in the lower stomach, thighs hips and ass (mostly). Guys gain in their bellies. Different proportions.

This guy must be suffering from vanity sizing in male's clothing. I used to wear a size 20 in women's and it was huge. I was helping a male friend of mine crossdress. The pants at the mall had both a vanity size and waist measurement, and according to that my friend should have been a size 14 or 16. He fit a 10. The guy in this article is either chubby himself, or built like a brick house.

What the fuck?

Guys and girls are fundamentally different on so many levels. Guys are going to have much wider shoulders than women do, and narrower hips. Women alone have a huge amount of variance between them in terms of hip size and shape, torso size and shape, etc - not all women are a cartoon hourglass shape.

The idea of directly comparing male bodies to female bodies and then trying to make a point of it is absolutely absurd. This guy is a "writer" like I'm a professional basketball player.
