A concrete tip for staying away from porn - Meditate
This post is part of an ongoing series of posts about staying away from porn
Meditate
In a previous post, we discussed Urge Surfing, which is a very specific form of guided meditation designed to help a person through a rough time of temptation. You can think of Urge Surfing as first aid, a way of dealing with acute and immediate urges to act out. Another form of meditation, Mindfulness Meditation, can help us in a more preventative and proactive way.
Without going into too many details here, Mindfulness Meditation is a technique of deliberately and calmly becoming aware of bodily sensations, emotions, and thoughts, experiencing these phenomena without judgment. When practiced regularly, meditation can result in a general lowering of stress, anxiety, depression, and other factors that have been known to be triggering to addicts.
While Mindfulness Meditation techniques originate from Buddhist Vipassana Meditation, it is not a religious practice, and it is widely used by people of many faiths, and by those with no religious faith at all.
The Insight Meditation Center offers a wonderful (and free!) introductory online course.
