My town is full of black ice on the roads. Even pedestrians slip on the pavements.

Awesome. My first winter as a cyclist in Chicago is what convinced me to go fixed gear. Three miles into my ride every morning my rear derailleur was so frozen up I couldn't shift anyway.

It definitely becomes more necessity than choice in the Chicago winter.
