Is there a site like yelp pretty much, where you can see actual photos and reviews of people, not just PR stuff. Yelp doesn't really have much, and tripadvisor seems to favor touristy stuff heavily.

Tabelog is one of the larger, if not the largest, food review site. Tons of pictures, but it's in Japanese.
The only other one I can think of that's in English is Bento, but it doesn't have a ton of pictures.
Japanese is fine, I can read it, just had no idea where to look for information. Will definitely check this out, thanks!
no reviews, put pictures: Google Maps Streetview. There are tons of restaurants and shops with 360° panoramas. Example You can even "walk" around and see all the rooms, like in normal Streetview
They also have coupons so you can get 20% off and stuff at some places.
Go to your nearest station and grab a copy of Hot Pepper and Coupon Land; and look at their websites. There are different editions for different parts of Tokyo.
They also have coupons, and esthetique stuff if you need to get your legs waxed or something.
This is for planning a trip, so I can't grab stuff in Japan unfortunately. Also, trip is to Hokkaido. Stuff for Tokyo is easy enough to find even in english.

Tabelog, HotPepper, and GuruNavi (which also has, a somewhat crappy, English interface). While I consider Tabelog the most comprehensive, many restaurants use one of the latter two for their homepage. HotPepper has the most coupons, but the other sites will link you there.
