Just fyi you should ulock through rear wheel and frame and cable through the front wheel.

what's the benefit of doing it that way? tougher to break off the u-lock or something?

Snipping a cable is much easier than breaking a u-lock. Some can just cut the cable, shoulder the bike, take it home and break the u-lock at their leisure. Also the rear wheel is not secured at all in your photo, and that is the second most expensive thing after the frame. So u-locking the frame and rear wheel (to something) secures the most expensive parts with the best lock.

good to know, i'll keep this in mind. thanks.

By the way if it's a really tight fit you don't have to lock the frame. Just lock the rear wheel to the rack through the rear triangle. It's impossible to pull the wheel through the triangle (see popular baby toys), so that actually works just as well.

The main advantage to including frame tubes is that it uses more space inside the lock which improves your defense against jacks.

I suppose you could confuse a would-be thief who then spends five minutes trying to fit the circle through the triangle and eventually kicks your bike in frustration. But I don't think that really happens.

I think he means you should use the u-lock to attach the rear wheel and frame to the rack and the cable to secure the front wheel. A good the if could just snip the cable then have all the time in the world to work on that u-lock.

Also, try not to leave your keys in the lock ;)

haha ya the keys are just in there for the pic, i was just about to ride off to lunch.. my u-lock is too tight to fit on that fat rack as well as through the wheel and frame though. stupid bike rack, look at how thick it is. so i don't know how much better i can do with what i got on this rack.. either way it's super safe in front my office. but good to know for other situations.

I have a kryptonite mini and lock to the same size rack. It took a bit to figure out but I go diagonally through rack, rim and seat tube (with the curve of the lock on the rack side if that makes sense). There's practically no space left inside the lock.

But also take into account your risk of theft for the area. If you're comfortable with the lock job it's your prerogative. I've seen really nice bikes locked up with dental floss with no consequences.

One rule of thumb I use though is always lock better than the other bikes around. If moves the only one around is want Fort Knox level security.

Tension your chain when you get a chance as well.

ya it looks a little slack, doesn't it. i have no clue how to tension a chain, but i'll look it up on youtube.

Depends on whether you have rear facing or vertical drop outs and an eccentric bottom bracket or not. Pics, man, pics

2

It's got vertical dropouts and an EBB. That's a Raleigh Tripper.

So a 5mm Allen to adjust the chain tension?

Hmm, terrible way to lock a bike, but I guess no one is going to steal it and risk an avalanche :)

4
atworktempOP•

this is right outside my office so safety is of very minimal concern here.. but ya, what is wrong with my locking job? it's easy to say that sucks, but why not offer some helpful advice? how can i lock it up better? constructive criticism is very welcome but it doesn't really help to just say i did a terrible job locking it.

Sure; see my comment above.

U-Lock from rack to rear wheel inside triangle, then cable through front wheel.

Someone with a pair of cable cutters can just snip and carry that thing off into the night and have their way with the U-Lock at their convenience.

Also, Buffalo or something?

atworktempOP•

this is in quebec. i usually don't use my cable lock at all when i lock the bike up at work, i just brought it to reach the rack with all the snow around it. when there is no snow covering the rack i usually just lock the frame to the rack, there's like .01% chance of someone stealing this bike from outside the office.

by the way, the bike is a 2013 raleigh tripper. first bike i've had with internal hub gear, really nice ride. could use a higher gear on it, but what ya gonna do.

Well, you could get a different number teeth on the front. I don't know what it's called, but the cogs that are connected to your pedal swivel thingymajingy... ? :)

But serious props for biking in this shit. I've been biking in the snow here too, it's quite fun.

Chainring is the word you're looking for

  1. How snowy is it on the actual roads where you ride?
  2. Did they actually plow the snow completely over the bike racks? That wasn't very nice, and probably risks bending them.
2
atworktempOP•

the main roads are salted like crazy, they are clear and bleached white. a real pleasure to ride on. smaller side streets can be pretty icy and bumpy where the snow got compacted by cars and freezes, not so bad though.

and ya they did just dump the snow all over the rack haha. i guess they figured no one was gonna bike thru the winter but i decided to go for it this year.

I dig out bike racks on my campus in the later parts of winter, though not many this bad. Most are just disused or drifted in quick, but a few get plow-moated or dumped on. Facilities mgmt has been better since I started shoveling to keep them clear. It's like litter; a psychological response to signs of disuse, abuse, neglect is to further those passively, but the opposite can also be manipulated.

Is it just me or is that rack above your head level?

1

At least you didn't have to dig out your whole bike and true your wheels. At my college they routinely plow the bike racks in with bikes still locked to them, often with enough force to move the entire bike rack several feet. (they're not bolted to anything)
