Updated for 2015: welcome to /r/Recordings!

Current Request Compilation Thread (from June 18) here.

Welcome to r/Recordings!

This subreddit consists of a community that finds beauty in sound; it is a place where you can audibly be yourself. Whether you want to speak your mind, cover a song, or recite a poem- this is the place to let your voice be heard!

If you're interested in how to get started in posting your own recordings here, a very quick overview is included in the comments.

Our most important and relevant rules are in the sidebar. We greatly encourage "tagging" in your posts' titles, especially by the gender of whomever is being recorded, and very especially if your content is NSFW. Oh, and both requests (or calls for requests) and collaborations are strongly encouraged!

Broadly speaking, r/Recordings welcomes all sorts of user-created content, but this is ultimately a subreddit for amateurs. If you're trying to promote your band, you might find other subreddits a better fit for you. Any spam posts should be reported to the mods, and they will be removed.

  • Milestones:

This subreddit was created February 5, 2013, so (as of this writing) we're just about to turn two years old! We began with just a handful of subscribers at first, but we're now up to 1,153 subscribers (as of Sunday, February 1, 2015). Thanks to everyone for your continued support!

  • Contests/Activities/Miscellaneous

There are many things you can do with the community! We're very big into getting to know our members and keeping them involved. We have had several contests since our inception, the first one being our /r/Recordings Contest from August–September 2013. The mods all appreciate the community very much, and are always looking for ways to make this an even better place. The mods aren't the only ones who try to keep the members involved, of course: the community is always posting questionnaires or challenges, and answering and tagging each other in questionnaires. It's a nice way to get each other involved and to also get to know each other a bit more. Another way we all enjoy getting to know each other is with the livestream/chatroom!

User-flair is enabled for this subreddit. Remember that this is a SFW-subreddit, so nothing too naughty. But you can select your own flair and have it displayed to others who visit this subreddit. Details available at this announcement post.

  • /r/Recordings Live Streams on RaidCall

The live streams are a place for the community to get together beginning every Saturday night at 11pm US Eastern Time. (See the comments for information of converting this to your time zone.) Whether it is bantering, having discussions, or playing games with each other, everyone is welcome to join! There is a text-chat window, so you don't have to speak, and you'll be just as welcome. Saturday nights (for US/Canadian/South American time zones) are without question the most active nights for the livestream, but in principle, our livestream room is open continuously. Feel free to hop on any time, though it may be relatively inactive during the rest of the week.

The r/Recordings chatroom uses the RaidCall client. Raidcall is a free program and service designed for group communication, both audio and text. Without a RaidCall account and RaidCall client, you will not be able to join the livestream. (Note: we recommend you use your reddit username as your RaidCall username, since it'll make it easier for people in the stream to recognize you from reddit, and vice versa.) In the links below (as well as the comment threads) you will find all the information you'll need to download it and be able to participate.

[Note: the livestream merits its own separate discussion, so please see the comments for further details.]

  • Once you've downloaded the RaidCall client, launch it, and sign into your account, you can access our livestream by entering the Room ID. From there, you will be shown four rooms:

    • Lounge: This is a place where everyone can speak freely, and it's effectively the "default" room for our interactions.

    • Game Room: This is all about games. Whether it's a board game, card game, or video game, this is where you'll be if you and a group of friends would like to start up a game. Everyone is welcome to be included, but if you are joining mid-game, please remember to be polite. You're more than welcome to join, but expect to wait for a new round if relevant.

    • Movie Night: As you'd expect, this is all about movies. If you're in the mood for a good old fashion movie night- this is the place to be. This room is all about watching films with the r/Recordings community. The host is u/outingmyself, and he will always make a post in regards to what movie will be watched and the date and time it will be aired. Here is one example, and here's a more complete list.

    • Away Room: Whether you need to take care of a few errands or just want a minute to yourself, this room will accommodate your needs with it's quiet surroundings. Microphones are disabled in this room (except for livestream mods).

Broadly, we try to keep things relaxed and friendly here, but we do have a few simple rules that we ask you to follow; see our sidebar for you.

  1. Treat others how you would like to be treated.

  2. No distributing other people's personal information without their consent.

  3. Offensive or derogatory comments will not be tolerated.

  4. Don't get into personal arguments in public. These situations should be taken to private communication.

  5. And if you are being harassed in private-messages or in the livestream in any way, please inform the mods. Via reddit, the best way is to send modmail, which all the mods can read. Alternatively, you can directly PM individual mods: /u/maridoll (who created this subreddit!), /u/MistSir, /u/outingmyself, /u/AletheaRae, /u/HannahSlamma, /u/Newtronium, or lurking_quietly (i.e., me).

If you have an issue specific to the livestream, you can PM one of the livestream mods via RaidCall itself, assuming we're logged into RaidCall and not AFK. All the subreddit moderators are also livestream mods, so sending us reddit-modmail or PM'ing us through reddit may be the best way to contact us. Additionally, we have two livestream moderators who are not moderators of this subreddit whom you can PM via reddit: /u/notsoswede, and /u/Haggishunter.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask, and welcome to r/Recordings!
