Visa-free visit question

Hey, I have a question. I'll be visiting HK and China (Beijing) from Canada, and read that I can stay in China for up to 72 hours with a visa delivered at the airport. However, I saw this which claims that the visa-free holder must travel to a third country that is not the one where he's from. Is that true? If not, then the visa should be enough, right?

Thanks!

Yes, that is correct. You can only get the 72 hour visa if you are in transit to the 3rd country. You may not simply fly to China. However, HK is considered a separate country for the purposes of the visa and you can get a visa on arrival in HK.

So you could go Canada > Beijing (72 hours) > Hong Kong (visa on arrival).

That's just my understanding so you may want to get a second opinion.

This is correct. You need a scheduled flight in and out of China within the 72 hour window for the transit visa. I know of some people who booked long layovers in Beijing to visit the Great Wall.

Hong Kong is a free visa on arrival. Just swipe and go!

I'll be going to hk first, then Beijing for a return to Canada, which had me questioning the bit about origin and destination country can't be the same. But reading up some more, the origin in this case would be HK.

Hmmm? Isn't the origin Canada and the destination HK and China?

I mean the destination of my return flight.
