TravelTen MyBus tickets no longer sold according to my local 7/11

Tried to buy a Travel Ten myBus 3 from Chatswood 7/11 and i was told that the tickets are discontinued and no longer for sale.

I buy the Travel Ten tickets because its $0.74 cheaper per trip for occasional travel (less than 8 trips in a week).

TravelTen myBus 3 are $3.76 per trip

Opal 3 sections is $4.50

Has anyone else heard anything this?

If they don't want to sell you the tickets, get them somewhere else. They definitely haven't been discontinued yet.

If TfNSW follows the same pattern as for the first round of tickets withdrawn in September last year, they will give notice of the change some months ahead. But in any case, if you want to keep using Travel Tens as long as possible, you could always just stockpile them now.

They're also the perfect size to pick food out of your teeth. Important feature that Opal can't match.

yep my plan is to stockpile the hell out of them.

I'd be careful, while they're probably going to be reasonable and give you a month of so to get rid of them if you try to buy several months worth NSWtransport is just going to laugh and make them invalid.

They might be why should they? Stockpiling tickets (beyond a couple of weeks worth, IIRC the very long term tickets were refunded) is not normal and the changeover has been very gentle, there's no excuse for still having unused tickets than "I was avoiding opal".

Forget your opal card, no riding the bus for you? Even if they continue to sell single mybus you'll be screwed if your destination doesn't have a place to buy one to get home with.

They're probably doing this as the travel ten work out cheaper per a ride than the opal card

It's almost like an old system of transport pricing is being phased out and replaced by a newer system, but seriously they've given you plenty of time, it was last year when opal was placed on the last of the buses, that's pretty much the signal for "change over", this transition has been coming for a while FFS.

We still have both in Brisbane.

Yeah but you guys just got Saturday Night Fever in theatres last week. Give it some time

6
chill1995•

We had a touch card system before you had one.

Brisbane still had magnetic backed multiple ride tickets? I don't think so.

Meh, I still buy concession mybus10 to use on trips where there are no ticket inspectors, leichhardt-glebe-newtown etc, works out less than a buck a trip.

if you forget your travel 10 you can't ride either

You were lied to. They're not discontinued. All corporate Australia Post outlets still sell them.

You can always buy paper tickets elsewhere - http://www.transportnsw.info/en/tickets/where-to-buy.page?#ticket-reseller

Presumably the retailer itself has decided to stop stocking the paper tickets, which could've been for a number of reasons. e.g., majority of customers use Opal, or safety (they're 'activated' and essentially treated as cash - an attraction for thieves, for example)

5
firestorm91•

I'd say it's a safety thing given that 7/11's tend to be "soft targets" for thieves, along with petrol stations.

I work for a bus company and there are no travel ten machines on any of our fleet. Times are a changing.

3
ForUrsula•

Hasnt that always been the case for Hills buses or whatever?

4
criticalenemy•

Yup I've always had mine marked off with a pen.

2
Scuzzbag•

I don't know, I never caught a bus in the hills before

1
xcrunchx•

travel 10s use the same machine as other paper tickets though.

1
Scuzzbag•

The only ticket machines I see at work print out a paper receipt, that and opal.

I could be wrong, we outsource the maintenance on the ticket machines to a rep from the manufacturer of the machines, and I don't get to see the buses as they pick up passengers, so I might have missed it.

AFAIK private buses never had magstripe readers - after they were added to the system (with the rollout of MyZone) the tickets were handled manually by the drivers (with the TravelTens, crossing off the number with a texta).

3
birdy9221•

Can confirm. Hills bus drivers mark off a thing with a tick/cross/scribble and print you a receipt.

Thanks, I didn't know that

They still have to sell paper tickets for tourists.

THR•

Why? Go to places like London and you have to buy an Oyster card.

5
Todda468•

An opal card is like $5, not a big expense for someone who has paid a couple of hundred at least to fly here. Plus an opal card is 10000x as easy to use. You literally tap on and tap off, you could train a fucking monkey to do that. Honest to fckn god when is this anti-opal circlejerk going to end?

Astro_nautAlways has to mention the baby•

Isn't an opal card free? It has been for every one I've gotten.

My problem with it is that there's no concession/student prices. I'm inconvenienced buying daily tickets still :|

Yeah and Melbourne makes tourists get its MyKi card as well. Now I just keep one in my travel pack for whenever I go to Melbourne.

3
crazymunch•

Was gonna say, I've had a Myki in my wallet since it was introduced and I live in Sydney, was wishing they'd bring it in here up until Opal came out

5
Todda468•

I got a myki for melbourne, never used anything but paper tickets before, easiest thing in the world.

  1. Put money on card

  2. Use card

  3. Repeat step 2 until out of funds and do step 1

Clearly this incredbly fuckingcomplicated process is inferior to the old paper ticket system, I'm sure millions of people would visit melbourne if they only used our superior luddite system of paper tickets, a much simpler system, well you need your mybus for the bus and of course you have to figure out how many "sections" it is (totes easy for someone new to the city right?), then if you want to use a train you need another ticket for that, this works point to point, now if you're moving around a lot you should just get a mymulti, now there's 3 zones for that.............

Yeah clearly the paper ticket system is better for tourists than the incredbly fucking complicated process of "tap on tap off" and "top up" at one of the very rare (I once had to walk 2 minutes to find a place to top up my opal card, clearly inferior to paper tickets) convinience stores/petrol stations which are never anywhere near transport stops.

2
jond42•

Opal equivalents work fine for tourists in many other coutries. I used systems like that in 2 or 3 other countries before we finally caught up. It's not difficult at all, in fact it's simpler.

3
twelveofjune•

I used the Metro in Paris where they still used paper tickets. In theory it was easy enough, you use a ticket when you get from A to B regardless of distance. But when I was in Gare du Nord there were barriers EVERYWHERE and I wasn't sure if I had to keep using tickets to get through the station. Tap on/tap off ticketing systems is definitely better than paper tickets, provided they work correctly and aren't terribly expensive.

2
Todda468•

I don't the opposition to e-tickets, they're great, but clearly this incredbly fuckingcomplicated process is inferior to the old paper ticket system, I'm sure millions of people would visit these cities if they only used our superior luddite system of paper tickets, a much simpler system, well you need your mybus for the bus and of course you have to figure out how many "sections" it is (totes easy for someone new to the city right?), then if you want to use a train you need another ticket for that, this works point to point, now if you're moving around a lot you should just get a mymulti, now there's 3 zones for that.............

Exact same scenario for me this morning. I asked when they were discontinued and the guy said 2 months ago.... I was like 'wut' because I bought one from that store like a week ago.

I walked towards the station to one of the newsagencies and bought a travel ten with no problem. It's actually in a more convenient spot for me so screw you 7/11.

2
mister_z•

I like the opal system, but the bus fares for my zone are more expensive overall for me as I cannot take advantage of the 8 trip cap. I work from home one day a week, so using opal for just the 4 days is the same for 5 days worth of travel using a travel ten...
