Favorite overrated coffee drink?

What is your guilty pleasure that you might even be embarrassed to be drinking? I love the Starbucks bottled iced coffee, even if it mostly sugar and very little coffee.

Me too! They're so good!

Shhhhhh! Don't draw attention to us. Be cool.

"HOW'S THAT BLACK, NOT SWEETENED OR IN ANY WAY CONTAMINATED WITH DELICIOUS MILK AND/OR YUMMY PUMPKINY GOODNESS, COFFEE TREATING YOU? GOOD RIGHT? DID I MENTION WE ONLY DRINK OUR COFFEE BLACK?"

Starbucks has a s'mores flavored latte now. You're welcome! I've stayed away from their drinks but sometimes I want a sample. Their salted caramel hot chocolate was the shit!

4
kclaser1Americano•

Its actually a s'mores frappuccino. As a employee i really want to hate it because it so much work to make but its also soooo good.

1
ecoevodevo•

I like those little canned Starbucks doubleshots, if for anything other than the instant on-hand caffeine

37
alphaatom•

These are my go to when I've just come off an all nighter doing work and I need a shitload of a caffeine just to stay awake, plus they taste like sugar water which lets face it is delicious.

10
sageDieu•

You should try ordering them to be made by the baristas, the tall size is basically the exact same thing (two shots, simple syrup, 2% milk) but the grande is 3 shots and venti is 5. best price to caffeine ratio at the bux and if you want sweetener/flavor or milk its included so you can do like vanilla and cream or whatever and get a tasty quick boost.

3
pconner•

Isn't their regular drip coffee the best caffeine/price ratio?

2
sageDieu•

True, but it also usually sucks.

Archvanguardian•

I want to find little mason jars or something to make my own in. But I love those.

2
geruszFrench Press•

I liked them too when I was in the US. They aren't available in Europe, we just have the Seattle latte, the skinny latte and the caramel machiatto in cups.

2
GroundDwellerV60•

They aren't available in Europe

Tesco in the UK has them, I get them every now and then

1
rareturtleOP•

Those are just too dense for me. It's like drinking juice concentrate instead of diluting it first...

Don't you lying sons of bitches deny that Starbucks Caramel Frappacinos are fucking delightful on a late summer afternoon.

Peppermint Mocha Lattes around the holidays. Doesn't matter where I get it from. They taste like a piece of Christmas and I'm not mad about it.

Every now and then I will get a Monster Java Irish Blend, or one of those Gas Station sugar Cappuccinos (eXtreme Mocha anyone?). Nothing better for driving long distances in the middle of the night.

Nope! I mean it's not great even "good" coffee by any means but as a coffee-flavored-beverage. I'm quite happy to overload my arteries with the sugary antifreeze.

Don't worry I do penance with my FP when I get where I'm going.

5
storunner13•

Ha! and penance out the back end...

2
DiscoJaguarFrench Press•

Just encouragement to drive those last 100 miles a little faster :)

2
Archvanguardian•

I can't do those. If I want something like that, the Starbucks Double-shots (regular, not the energy drink ones) are what I go for. I used to love gas station "cappuccinos", though! QuikTrip?

2
DiscoJaguarFrench Press•

Yep! Best gas station chain IMO

2
rareturtleOP•

I hear you, even if my pancreas is screaming from the sugar

1
magiccoffeetruck•

I can't call it a guilty pleasure but yeah, gas station extreme mocha half with half of hopefully a relatively fresh brewed something coffee like substance. Wash it down with a clumpy apple fritter. Now, that's guilty.

1
HighOnPi•

Cheap mochas. No shame.

rareturtleOP•

Amen.

Can't go wrong there.

A buddy of mine works at Starbucks and made me an Undertow before. Basically, its a layer of vanilla syrup, cold milk, then two espresso shots slowly poured over spoon for a total of 3 layers. You're supposed to drink it at a 45 degree angle so you get the intensity of the hot espresso followed by the cool and rich layers of milk and vanilla after.

Now if only I could try this with actually good tasting espresso.... One can only imagine.

15
rareturtleOP•

Never heard of it. Going to get it next time I crave sweet

1
Geoffbot•

Boomtown in downtown Houston does a double undertow shooters. Fucking great.

1
Muppet_Mower•

That's my favorite coffee shop in town. I'll have to try that next time I go in. I usually get a pourover or one of their citrusy/agave drinks.

1
sageDieu•

As a Starbucks barista that spends a lot of time on this subreddit I am really enjoying that even though people talk shit about the beans and culture at Starbucks all the time almost every answer here is "x grossly sweet Starbucks drink."

I'm the same way of course. You guys feel free to ask any questions about your guilty pleasures.

I'm going to get shit for admitting this but I get a Starbucks Blonde roast every morning. I drive my wife to work every day and it's just part of our morning routine to stop at the Starbucks on the way to get a coffee.

Anyway, I've noticed there's a little sign over the blonde roast coffee that says it's available as pour-over too. I've never asked for it that way since there's always a line and I don't want to be "that guy", but have you had it prepared that way before? If so how's it different from the regular brew and is it really as much of a pain to make as I'm thinking it is?

P.S. - Java chip frappucinos were my go-to guilty pleasure until I realized just how bad they were for me.

sageDieu•

Our daily blonde roast (veranda blend) is actually pretty good, it's a little more acidic than I prefer generally but it has more flavor than most of the dark roasts they make us brew bulk for customers.

Our regular coffee routine is just based on each individual store's demand, so the info I give here is specific to my store and other places may brew blonde later into the day or cut off earlier:

We open in the morning and brew all 4 in our "cadence" which is what we call the coffee rotation - pike place (medium roast), dark roast (whatever the weekly feature is, they change it up), decaf pike place, then veranda blend which is the blonde. We have a timer set for 8 minutes and when it goes off we brew the next coffee in that rotation.

At 11AM at my store I guess that's when the sales numbers for blonde drop, we switch the timer to ten minutes and brew just medium, dark, and decaf, and put blonde on pour over. Then at around 5 or 6pm we'll do the same for decaf, then later around 8 or 9 again with dark roast so we just brew pike at night and can clean the rest of the equipment.

So once a coffee like blonde roast is "on pour over" as we call it, we grind up a tin of it on the paper cone filter setting, then just make each cup as needed with standard pour over technique - 3, 4, and 5 scoops of the coffee each for the respective small, medium, and large sizes, hot water to saturate the grounds for 30 seconds and let it breathe, then hot water in a circular motion until the pour over is done.

As you can see this is a bit time consuming and labor intensive, it takes about 3 minutes to make a cup and probably half of that is whoever's making it having to stand there to set it up and pour and everything.

So it does make a good cup of coffee but can be kind of a pain. I personally enjoy making pour overs as I'm really passionate about coffee and I feel like I can make a better cup of coffee for my customers in a pour over than I can just brewing a big pot of it. But most Starbucks baristas don't care as much and might act annoyed at it.

The only time it's frustrating to do is when we're really busy and people want either a particular pour over (we have one guy that wants us to get a specific coffee off the retail shelves and make like a 4.5 scoop double cup one inch room pour over and is super particular, that's annoying) or if they want more than one and are impatient about the fact that I might not be able to get it out super quickly when my job includes ringing up the 30 people streaming in the door on top of preparing the pourover that is far enough away to where I can't do both at once.

deridan•

I work virtually and Starbucks is my only option so I get a blonde roast every day too. Most days they only have it as a pour over and it's always pretty good. I don't notice much of a difference between that and the regular one, but it could just be me.

2
Ange897•

Some days, I just want a caramel frozen latte. I work for a Biggby Coffe (a Starbucks like chain that is mainly in Michigan and surrounding states) and a frozen latte is our version of a frappaccino. While high is calories and sugar, it just hits the spot some days!

8
rareturtleOP•

Though I've never had one, I can feel the diabetes.

3
Ange897•

Hahaha yeah, they have a ton of sugar in them! They at least have real espresso in them which makes me feel the tiniest bit better about it.

1

This isn't coffee, but one time I had one of their Chocolate Chip Creme freezes and simultaneously died and went to heaven and got sick from the pure sweetness and went into a sugar coma. No regrets

0
Ange897•

Sometimes you just have to embrace the sugar coma and enjoy!

I like making my own frappuccino like frozen coffee drinks on occasion. It's delicious, even if barley coffee at all.

6

Gas station cappuccino. They work best when you have a long drive ahead of you.

Ugh. Cheap folgers/maxwell house/whatever grocery store brand drip with powdered creamer. Just how my mom likes it.

Espresso. Adulterated to hell with ice, heavy cream, and sugar-free vanilla syrup. It's my go-to drink for a hot day when I'm also way low on calories.

Those disgustingly sweet Starbucks frappucinos in the glass bottles. Maybe I just like the shape of the bottle.

Dunkin Donuts black iced coffee. I drink probably 10 a week of those.

White chocolate mochas.

With lots of whipped cream.

3/4 sweet.

Not too hot, please.

...I used to be a barista. I usually just take black coffee. I don't know how this happened but goddammit they are delicious.

3
kmm91•

A java chip frap from Starbucks. Since getting really into coffee , my tolerance for sweet coffee gets lower and lower, but there's a special place in my snobby heart for that thing... even though it's basically blended chocolate chip ice cream. I usually get it with an extra shot too because it really tastes even better that way.

3
darthval•

I don't think anyone has overrated this, but I occasionally go to 7-11 and doctor up a mix of their regular coffee with one of their sugary cappuccino machine flavors. The cappuccino machine stuff is too sweet for me to stomach on its own, but toned down it's not too bad.
