Rerolled to a different Faction to level a new toon but decided I wouldn't do dungeons or take any flight paths. Holy cow, what an experience so far!

So I've played this game for about 9 years primarily as a horde player. When I make an alt, I usually do my best to rush them to max as fast as I can.

This time around, I came back after raiding Mythic Highmaul back in January after taking a minor break after our raid team slowly faded and decided to just go solo for a bit. I made an Alliance Hunter and decided to just explore. Not going for instances and riding and exploring a land I've never really noticed, I've gained a huge appreciation for what this game is. Riding from westfall to stormwind, I literally spent an hour just looking through Stormwind, stopping at a few corners just loving the architecture. Riding from Stormwind to STV just makes the world feel huge. Listening to the WoW background music as I've emersed myself in reading quest lines. I've never been a lore junkie but these small side stories really took me in. I even stopped and opened a new tab to read about the background on a couple of NPCs.

I was one of those who first complained about the lack of content but never really appreciating what this game really has to offer. I guess this game is what you make it and taking a different approach really has rejuvinated a love for the game. I'm only level 37 but I'm super excited to see what is ahead of me.

When WoD started I created a fresh Night Elf rogue to be my new main. I did the same thing, except I also ditched heirlooms. It was an infinitely more enjoyable experience.

Fun is still there, but sometime you have to create it yourself. It's like when you go and play Dark Souls or something after beating it several times and purposefully make a build dedicated to a notoriously weak weapon.

Fun is still there, but sometime you have to create it yourself.

That's why my stance is "The game is what you make of it." We're given a world, and it's up to us to find ways to have fun in said world.

28
LeRedditsModsRCunts•

if a major part of the game is happening in your head (rules, rp, limitations) then you are doing it right.

11
Psidebby•

I very much agree with this. It's kinda funny when people rage about Blizzard stripping away the RPG in WoW, but it's in all honesty the player in the end doing it... They look at the toning down of stat types such as Resistances, and ignore the fact that RPG is a lot about imagination.

6
Ragozi•

fact that RPG is a lot about imagination.

Yea, I think you're right. In the end, we as players are doing it to ourselves. I mean, I'm in the same boat as 99% of people. I make an alt - heriloom it out - rush to 100. Now I have 4 lvl 100's just sitting there doing nothing.

Recently, I have become better friends with some people at work and they play Alliance. Being a 99% Horde player since Beta, I was like what the heck I'll start a toon over there. Of course, I got all the herilooms on this little Gnome Rogue, but actually leveling and not instance queueing is ... almost better?

The game has all these resources to help us level up ASAP, but it's on US if we want to use them or not. If we don't, we can still see how the game was 'originally' (I say it in quotes because so much has changed) designed.

Anyways, I'm also on Dentarg - WTF SERVER IS THAT? I've always been a Mal'Ganis/Kel'Thuzad - high pop server kind of guy. This fresh-ish start is almost refreshing, to be honest.

4
InZomnia365•

Thats actually the main reason I re-rolled to a RP server. I dont do any RP myself (I only sometimes RP walk around lol), but seeing other players RP just makes the world (well, primarily Stormwind, but sometimes you see random RP out in the world) feel that much more alive. Theres also a slightly better sense of "server" community, for better and for worse.

Really, the only disadvantage is that I cant do open world PVP. Im pretty casual, but I mainly do casual PVP like open world and random BGs. Though not getting constantly ganked by a lvl 100 when playing an alt is a nice change, lol.

2
LeRedditsModsRCunts•

yes even though the game itself has been stripped of many small things (yes i've complained about it as well) for the most part the imagination can make up for that.

0
______CABLE______•

Exactly. If I only did current content I'd quit so fast. So now I'm working on getting every rep to exalted ON a fresh 100 (still 97) It's going to be hard, but I think it will be a great experience. I'm not looking forward to Ravenholdt, but I gotta do it for the rogues.

2
Psidebby•

I keep wanting to do that, but then I look at the Skyguard from TBC and start whimpering like a pansy.

1
Tehbreadfish•

And just think: the Skyguard isn't hard compared to the horror of some vanilla reps.

1
RudeHero•

i think the same thing

but every once in a while, i'll wonder- if it really is just all in our imagination and the game is what you make of it, why warcraft? why not a less expensive title?

I rolled a new alt on an RP server, ditched heirlooms, and am reading all of the quest stuff and flavor. It is extremely rewarding. I even wrote a little story about my toon, and put it in an addon so that other people with the addon can read it.

Now I just need some people to talk to on this new server. I'm used to getting mass spammed g-invites, but nobody's talking to me. If somebody wants to recruit a slightly xenophobic night elf rogue on wyrmwrest accord, I'm your girl. And I don't know if it's a big raiding server, but I have a 6/10 mythic blood elf holy priest that I'm strongly thinking about faction changing.

6
-Nep•

I've actually been thinking about rolling another toon on a RP server as well. I hear all the time about how the RP servers are "dead" but the idea of still running across a few serious people still has it's allure.

3
hugglesaur•

Well, it might have been because I rolled right after the ban wave, but the starting zone was totally jam packed.

2
uTorrent•

If you look on some of the wow server sites, Moon Guard is the second most active server in game with WA not far behind. RP realms still offer a strong community

1
BrownNote•

If you're looking for an RP experience for your rogue, I've been working on building a new guild and am planning in reaching out for charter members soon that I think will be a fun experience for all. I'm not much of a raider though, but there's nothing wrong with having your RP alt in an RP guild and your main in an RP-PvX guild. :D

2
shad0wsofzer0•

I've been thinking about making an alt on wyrmrest as well! 8/10 mythic mage here :D

1
Niadain•

I goof off on Wyrmrest off and on. Its my alliance RP server. Im a game-a-holic though so I am not on often. But if you ever want to meet Tobik Overfuzz (my gnome...) just shoot me a message.

1
Charp89•

This is very true. I also sometimes lock my character's exp gain (npc in SW will do it for 10G. So I can stay at a certain level, and do more of the appropriate content without out leveling it (dungeons and zones).

2
shadowst17•

I REALLY want to do this with a Horde toon as I've never levelled one. But my problem is I will always choose a class I haven't already levelled and I end up wanting to play it at end game and end up rushing through the levelling process.

2
Prisoner945•

Almost 60... almost 70... almost 80... almost 85... almost 90... almost 100...

1
Mundlifari•

Fun is still there, but sometime you have to create it yourself.

This is what people miss from vanilla I think. Back then, they were still willing to do all this. To explore and discover. Nowadays, if it doesn't offer them at least a gear upgrade, it's not interesting. And then they come and complain how everything was better back in the day.

2
ananas99•

I actually leveled my first character and forever main this way. I thought dungeons were pro-level content :P

1
Breditor•

I wish they would make Heirlooms into a sort of enchantment. I agree that leveling up is way more fun without heirlooms, but I don't like the feeling of not having optimal leveling armor.

1
LeRedditsModsRCunts•

having optimal leveling armor.

well OP is talking about enjoying the game and taking it slow. so obviously leveling isnt his main concern, its soaking in the game.

also with current state of game NAKED is optimal enough for leveling. its eazy as shit.

4
Breditor•

I know, but I just don't really like the feel of soaking up the game while there are others around me in full heirloom armor getting leveling up 10 times an hour.

0
LeRedditsModsRCunts•

sounds like a shitty jealousy problem. If the way YOU Have fun in a game is impeded by the progress that OTHERS are making you got problems meng. just learn to have fucking fun.

0
Bikonito•

I created a fresh Night Elf rogue to be my new main.

Are we the same person?

1
Eurothemist•

No heirlooms is the way to go for sure. You can actually look forward to items dropping and stuff

29
Wuvluv•

I wish looms were just permanent enchants you can apply to your character that increased experience gained. I noticed the game leveling wise got infinitely less fun when I had no items to look forward to. :-(

42
ahoy1•

Not only that, but since your gear is always the absolute best for your level, you're constantly overpowering at-level content.

It's like playing tony hawk pro skater with the cheats on. Its fun at first but it makes the game really shallow.

19
LuxOG•

Maybe if you enjoy leveling at all...

9
ahoy1•

I do, actually. More than I enjoy end-game.

12
hugglesaur•

That's a really clever idea. So you still get the +exp, but also get to look forward to drops.

3
Swineflew1•

That's a great idea, it really does suck not having loot as an incentive to run dungeons.

2
aBabyShoe•

I wish there is a way you can increase the exp between character levels through all the expansions because I find it annoying that I hit one quest zone complete all the quests and I'm almost done with that current expansion.

2
GTFShadow•

I don't use heirlooms at all when leveling alts. You are almost guaranteed to get any drops from the dungeons. Plus if you a crafting profession you can make your gear to. It's much more enjoyable.

2
Lord_Reffs•

I always powerlevelled through content, but today my buddy decided to get into the game. We didn't take the RaF bonuses and rolled two Night Elves - without looms, while reading the whole quest text. He's completely blown away by Teldrassil, and i just rediscovered a world for myself!

24
SmashingK•

Teldrassil is where I started in vanilla. Absolutely amazing zone with great music. The atmosphere made questing so damn enjoyable.

I've tried to do this a bunch of times but everytime I end up powerleveling without meaning too >.<

You don't choose the Loom life, the Loom life chooses you.

11
Echosniper•

Couple types of people in this game so don't feel bad.

I'm the same way because I have way more fun raiding than anything else. But I'm forced to level which takes some of the fun out.

3
jebuz23•

If you're enjoying the game, you're doing it right.

1
Yakkahboo•

I've stopped using heirlooms too. Best case is I really enjoy the experience (I do!), worst case is a few more notches towards Loremaster

8
Tokbirn•

I'm doing this, too. But I decided to do all available quests, in order. Once I finished Ghostlands I hit Durotar and Mulgore and just going through in order. On a rp realm so I figure my Paladin wants to help everyone. At level 33 now, lots done and sold a lot of low level stuff. Sitting on 500 gold right now. Prices are low on that server but it'll be enough by the time I actually need stuff.

1
theflatulent•

I just started up some accounts for both my daughters, who had previously been playing the F2P accounts. We have been doing this same exact thing. We occasionally go off the beaten path to inspect some cool castle or something that my brain has filtered out of the scenery long ago. This is the closest I have been to reliving the "Vanilla" days.

5
gg_tfti•

Try not using a mount until level 40.

Make it feel like the good ol days.

4
Kkrit•

Remember to keep 60% riding skill till you hit level 60 and got 1k gold:)

0
Katiekat27•

I am doing the exact same thing after not playing WoW since WotLK came out. I just started a whole new account and made a horde toon for the first time. I am taking flight paths, but leveling through questing. To take it a step further, I am going from area to area doing loremaster. I am also reading all the flavor text this time. I am loving learning all the background stuff and the lay of the land. My favorite story so far was Sylvanas's. I plan on doing an Alliance one next, but for getting back into the game I wanted to try something totally different. I hope you keep on the path, and keep having fun with it!

3
msangeld•

I so want to do this, I think in order get me out of the "power" mindset having a second account would really help.

1
Katiekat27•

Yeah that's why I did it. When I used to play I always had to be in the best guild, have the highest DPS, etc. etc. I started all over in order to approach the game in an entirely different way. Now I play for love if the GAME itself, not for ranks or raids.

1
awayandawayandaway•

My biggest issue with rerolling right now is - Do I really want to maintain another garrison?

I am in the midst of leveling a rogue right now and just loving the Outlands again. I am excited to get to Northrend, but I think I might stop for a while at 85 and not press on to 100.

3
coldsprunk•

Same problem I ran into. I got to 100 and haven't messed with the garrison at all. Don't regret it.

3
ranky26•

I've levelled 7 characters to 100 so far, and I only actively maintain one Garrison. For 6 of my characters, the garrison might as well not exist.

For me the biggest issue rerolling is the legendary ring chain.

I've played all of my alts without heirlooms. That's also probably why I've only ever reached lv100 on 1 character.

Davixxa•

Same

1
laiyaise•

Imagine that with half the flighpaths, no teleporting to BGs or dungeons and actually seeing other people all the time, that was Vanilla WoW.

Back in the day I spent an entire month in STV, mostly around the Nesingwary Camp in the north entirely consumed with trying do those quests whilst fighting horde. It was the same in Arathi Highlands, Southshore, Tanaris, Silithus, Eastern Plaguelands, etc. Good times.

3
XPhazeX•

Its almost like there's a whole world(of warcraft) beneath the wings of everyone's flying mounts!

WoD was the first time I took the time to read all the quests and by nature of being forced to the ground, it was an incredible journey.

Every new Alt i level isnt allowed to use flying mounts in outland/northend(without lvl78-80 since icecrown/storm peaks kinda require flying) which makes the game 100x better

I am about to do the same. pretty excited. Always played Horde for the past 9 years.

2
Burlap6•

I've been playing ten years now and I just started doing the exact same thing a few days ago and I've been recommending it to guildies since. It's so much fun!

2
Pengroves•

Reading this makes me feel stupid, for the fact that I've never considered doing this before. I've always shit-talked Alliance, but I've never actually leveled a single Alliance toon. I'm super interested in doing this now. 10 years put in with Horde, I think it's time to explore the other half of the game.

2
DreamcastWriter•

I'd definitely recommend this. There are a lot of awesome Alliance areas you simply never see as Horde (westfall and gilneas both come to mind.) It's also worth taking a run through some of the faction specific questing areas, such as the ICC 5 mans (Alliance gets Jaina running through with them as opposed to Sylvanas) or the Isle of Thunder on Pandaria.

2
ahipotion•

On the flipside, even if you are Horde, make a toon and level it the same way. Heck, go to places you normally don't go to! Most people end up in the Barrens and Ashenvale, but try to go somewhere else instead and enjoy the scenery and quest givers.

I have created a Troll whom I plan on taking around the world whilst leveling getting the Loremaster achievement once I have leveled my other toons, to see what I have missed out on.

Sure, it might take me months to complete this, but it'll be a different experience; doing all the quests in the zones required for the Loremaster achievement.

2
alpha_male_69•

god the OP really hit me in the feels. i took a break from WoW end of january because I started to force WoW to become a chore rather than a bit of fun. i was forcing myself to do raids, to level up new guys through to level 100, to do garrisons as if it was a side-job, and really took everything fun away from the world. now, i've got a mate from work who plays WoW music when we're closing, and we talk about the lore a lot, and i've found myself for once actually being interested in all the back stories of WoW. best part of this is, in the 9 years I've played WoW, ive never actually completed many of the raids (Black Temple, ICC, Naxx etc), and I've been incredibly keen to get back into WoW and just explore the old content with the new, with a complete different appreciation for the game. i'd been tossing up coming back to WoW at the end of year or within the next few weeks as I'm starting to get more and more excited to come back, but this thread has honestly just confirmed that I'll be back very soon to do exactly what you've done. no flight paths, no dungeons, and NO heirlooms. thank you!

2
AngrymanagerOP•

Damn right! You'll have a blast!

1
Daywater•

I was thinking of starting a fresh toon, no heirlooms, no gold, don't even bother with professions and just play him to see all the lore. I took a lot of time with WoD to level because the questing was fucking amazing. The story and lore was awesome and I saw a side of the game I haven't seen before. I don't know much about the lore in Kal or EK but would love to take time to go through each zones story.

1
HalfTurn•

You can see all the lore while wearing heirlooms, having tons of gold, and doing professions.

2
Daywater•

I could, but the point isn't to level and have an alt. I am not big on Alts.

1
hopeless_romantics•

so go back and just do the quests. theyre all still available. hell you can even have them show up on the minimap by enabling track low level quests.

5
KevanBacon•

Tonight I'm making a new rogue. New server. Not using a single loom, flight path, and avoiding mounts as much as I can (outside of zones that require it etc.) and I'm not sending gold or bags over. I'm extremely excited to do this.

What sparked this idea was doing lore master on my main. I realized that I've always neglected to read quest text or turn the volume way up and completely immerse myself. I feel like I'm about to get opened up to a new side of wow.

1
