Alright, I'm impressed. This is the top comment on the bullshit news article about GamerGate's "failure" because there are female protagonists at E3.

Then there's this one...

GG has been big on saying "don't change games." Part of that change includes more female protagonists. See also: any comment thread dominated by GGers in which someone suggests a woman-led GTA.

But the solid response...

I'm pretty sure that they'd be equally pissed off if someone announced Tomb Raider with a male lead. Or Bayonetta with a male lead.

Give credit where credit's due. They're not all crazy.

Yes, forcing arbitrary change to a franchise with very defined characters is pointless, pandering and completely condescending.

Though I have 0 problems with a female-led GTA, as I doubt many do. We already got black and asian main characters in previous games and Online has character creation. It's a non-issue, as long as the character is good. I think the outrage-brigade would have a problem with it, since GTA mercilessly beats every character they have, so the litany of problems the female lead would undoubtedly possess and the shit she would get from everyone and the horrible situations she'd be in and the terrible person she would be would probably ensure some kind of outrage.

Antia runs a protection racket. She has problems with every game that doesn't bow to FF with money in hand. If she got a big enough donation I bet Doom would become FF game of the year.

I love how down the comment chain there's this:

GG doesn't have a problem as long as the female protagonists are meant for men to enjoy, with big huge gravity-defying breasts, a serious lack of sensible clothing, and just being generally sexualized in some way. however, look at how much shit they've given Revolution 60, Life is Strange, and Gone Home....

Oh yes, because Rev60 characters are dressed sensibly with realistic non-idolized bodies. They'd look like cheap Bayonetta ripoffs if only the modeler had any artistic talent at all.

Developers should be free to create whatever they like without bullies forcing them to pander to their political ideologies. It's not that GG doesn't want female protagonists, it's that GG wants people to be free to not make a female protagonist if that's the vision the creator wanted.

Ghazi has a hard time grasping this concept. They think in terms of forcing other people to do what they want, so they naturally assume their opponents want to force others to do the opposite. I guess the idea of freedom is too alien to them.

The idea that if you want a different game you need to create a market for it and then make it is far to hard. People should do what I think I want.

I've been a gamer for 30+ years. I buy the games I like, someone keeps making new games that I like. I don't buy games I don't like. It's a simple formula but by god it works.

I was really pleased to see several people say this. I don't completely agree with the way they're representing our arguments, but that's to be expected - at least these characterisations are actually in the realm of reality. This kind of attitude (not making up bullshit and pretending it sticks) actually has a much better potential for discussion and mutual understanding.

Is Ghazi actually... improving?
