Terror on Moonbase Alpha - Chapter 4, Part 2
"You got me in so much trouble!" Jacob groaned, standing up, trying his best to hide the relief in his voice. "I could almost hug you."
"Okay, do us both a favor and don't" she said, trying not to roll her eyes. She looked thin and pale, like she'd come out on the other side of something traumatic. "I'm going to have to ask you to move your ass though, we don't have a lot of time."
Jacob toweled off the sweat and slipped on a shirt, he thought - for just a moment - he caught her sneaking a peak at his abs and smiled at himself. When he emerged from his room, she was already moving down the hall, not far, her gait was slow and labored, but she was clearly on a mission.
He jogged a moment to catch up, her jaw was set, her gaze now locked forward. Together they made their way past Sector 3E in silence. As they crossed into Sector 4E, he saw her look up, look out the window toward the mining rig. It was a look that Jacob had seen before, one that he knew quite well.
A look of longing.
"Why are we headed back here?" he asked in spite of himself. "Isn't this where you almost bit it?"
He noticed the armed guards patrolling the area in full Hazmat gear and yet, oddly enough, no one stopped them. No one even seemed to look up in their general direction as they strode past.
"That is so weird --" he stopped and reached out to touch one of the guards. "It's like they can't even see us!" She grabbed his hand and pulled it back, her touch was like ice.
"Don't," she said. "That's the last thing we need right now."
Together they made their way toward the heavy, sealed bulkhead door. Through the small, triple-thick glass portal they could see the mass of yellow-ish green goop sitting there in the center of the room, a thick, black scar floating in the center of it. As Jacob looked closer, he noticed that the goop seemed to be vibrating intensely. He turned to Kara and saw, for just a fraction of a second, a smile that stretched far too long - up toward her earlobe.
"What the hell?" he yelped, recoiling.
"I need you to open the door, Jacob." She said it with a sigh, almost annoyed at having been discovered. "There's a panel over there on the wall. The release code is 583829191."
"Do you think I'm mental? Hell no!" He turned to bolt and shivered as a hard, icy grip clamped onto his harm, spinning him around.
He struggled, fighting to squirm free, a fight that seemed to leave him as he felt this sensation - not unlike needle pinpricks - crawling around the edges of his mind. A wave of warmth was fast washing over him.
He saw his father, smiling. At him. Arms outstretched, welcoming him home.
Telling him that all was forgiven.
"No way," Jacob said, shaking his head, tears streaming down his face as his father closed the distance.
"No way."
Turning to face "Kara", he wiped his eyes as she stared on at him, in shock. "There's no way in hell that's ever gonna happen."
"Help!" he yelled, grabbing the arm of a passing guard - relieved to hear the startled cry of the guard and at least a dozen guns leveled and cocked at him.
"Down! Get down on the ground!" a harsh voice demanded and, gratefully, Jacob complied.
And that wraps up Part 2 of Chapter 4, I hope you enjoyed it!
