What open source projects do you donate to?

I try to donate $50-$100 a month to open source software as I use it so much.

In the past I've donated to:

  • Keepass
  • Wikipedia
  • Firefox
  • GNOME
  • Latexila (very nice LaTeX editor I've combined with R and knittR for dynamic reports)

However I'm sure there are a bunch of key projects that probably get ignored because they don't operate in the foreground.

Gimp - because they give photographers a great tool. Mint - because it's so simple, reliable and good looking. Arch - because the Arch Wiki has saved my bacon when I needed accurate technical info.

because the Arch Wiki has saved my bacon

Good point! That is an outstanding resource, and worthy of a donation even from non-Arch users.

I've never used Arch, but I use their incredible wiki over and over. They were the first donation I made.

You must be a Photographer whose image editing exploits are limited to changing some colour balance—oh wait.

You must be one of those photographers who can't take a good photo, and needs hours of post processing to make it presentable.

You'd be surprised that most people don't use image processing software to edit photographs but for more serious things like say something like this. Good luck doing that in GIMP.

I've seem some pretty impressive stuff done in GIMP. ( http://gimpmagazine.org/ often showcases good stuff).

Thank you. POL is a great tool. For others that can't code and want to support Wine. Buying a copy of CrossOver directly funds Wine development.

If I use something that is kind of obscure but is a good piece of software that I make use of I will throw the developer a few bucks if they have a donation method. I've donated to a few other projects as well like gpg especially after I found out what dire straits the poor guy thats been maintaining it was in. Glad to hear he got a few big donations to keep him going, I mean who doesn't use his software?

The only open source project I've really donated money to so far is Krita because it has such a bright future and they always manage to reach their kickstarter goals. I'm not even a artist anymore and love how much Krita improves every version.

As of this month, I donate monthly to Free Software Foundation, Software Freedom Conservancy, and The Wikimedia Foundation. Though two of these may not be considered as open source projects.

I tried donating to Arch Linux, but the website was giving me issues. I will try again at some point.

EFF is another organization I donate to occasionally (mostly when buying from humble indie bundle).

for Arch, did you do this through Software in Public Interest website?

2
yentity•

Yeah. I think it was just really slow or something of that sort. I will try again. After looking at their website, I am considering donating to them directly instead of ArchLinux. I need to figure out how they are distributing the donations though.

There's an alternate page too. I recall one of them didn't work.

Anki, as it allowed me to pass many exams that would have been difficult for me to pass without it.

kinda low on funds, so I generally contribute time, not money. one project I've been trying to embrace lately is LibreOffice.

Wikipedia and Ardour. I also donate to ppmsite.com as I spent much of my teen years though and it's a great community that also produces some great open source software for modding C&C games.

What open source projects do you donate to?

I contribute heavily to FLOSS projects (and make a few), and I'm a student, so I don't donate money. But I "donate" code, translations, issue reports…

If I could donate, I would donate to libre/open source games like Red Eclipse. Godot is also a project that is sure worthy of donations.

I personally donate to Grafana. It's a great tool to create dynamic graphs from one or multiple timeseries database source(s).

Since I graduated from university and hit a job I've been making yearly donations to KDE and Wikipedia.

KDE because I'm using KDevelop 5 days a week on my day job and often at home afterwards. Here's for another donation in 2016 and a glorious KDevelop5 release.

Wikipedia because it was an invaluable resource during my time at university and continues to be so almost every day of my life.

Ardour fo dayz. That program is the main (not only) reason I can make music professionally without any closed-source software or OS, and its accelerating pace of improvement keeps surprising me. I'd like to donate more to them and other projects someday, when I'm not a poor college student.
