[censorship] Deadpool movie confirmed to have cut several scenes for being "too offensive."

CENSORSHIP

Can't directly attribute this to SJWs (yet) but the culture they've instilled is clearly something that's at least partially to blame. Everything these days has to get trimmed down, cut, or censored thank to these cry-bullies.

https://archive.is/PnL7L

I'm sure eventually we'll get a more in-depth reasoning for this bar scene to have been cut. Probably has something to do with trans. What am I basing that on? Absolutely nothing at all, but why else is anything cut these days?

EDIT The director said this scene was too vulgar to even make it to DVD / Blu-ray so we might never know what jokes were so offensive it had to be cut. Rape/trans is the only two things I could guess.

This is a publicity stunt you dinguses, they want fanboys to start a whine war online so they could then run an ad campaign about it and get attention.

Exactly. The outrage market can be farmed both ways.

Yep.

Yup, just drumming up sales for the Deadpool: UNRATED VERSION THEY WOULDN'T LET YOU SEE!!! Blu-Ray with 17 seconds of never before seen footage!!!

14
Gnivil•

Just like before how they were saying "man it'll have to be PG-13" (which imo would have been fine, all the best stories in the comics were).

And I almost actually got a little mad.

Even if it were true, that's nothing new to Hollywood. Movie studios are notorious for being the worst censors in the world. Unless of course you have guys like Trey Parker and Matt Stone who just don't give a shit, but that's pretty rare.

Oh if we only knew that when Hatred came out. Oh wait....

What the hell does he do that's so offensive?

Does he rape a chick, while voting for Trump, and talking about how taking in refugees isn't what's best for the country?

64
[deleted]•

No, he... he.... gasp criticized Anita Sarkeesian.

standardprocdure•

Bu.. bu... but you can't do that, YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!!

1
Kastan_Styrax•

No, but even in the trailers you can see some edits have taken place.

Can't recall who he joked about in the first trailer (where he was shown to be lying down in a hospital bed - I think - before he was operated on) but in the latest trailer the joke is different.

Its probably a case of trying to be "Deadpool edgy" and then the higher-ups saying "tone it down!" because they don't want to deal with the added controversy/anger the wrong crowd.

11
too_clever_username•

The quip in the bed was "Less angry Rosie O'Donnel", which I imagine was changed because the target audience doesn't know who she is anymore...

15
Dent_Arthurdent•

I don't know, how many kids do you think know who Jose Canseco is?

7
Orgell_Evaan•

The dialog in the trailer, when he pops out of the Suburban, changed from the spiel about why his suit is red to 'I only have ten bullets; I need you all to line up!'

How dare a Canadian vote for an American president!

3
Leoofmoon•

I'm sure will gee a unrated cut.

2
ShinkuDragon•

considering it's deadpool, it could be him raping a trans raping a dog raping a woman who was voting for bernie, while deadpool waves the confederate and nazi flags and is shooting a revived abraham lincoln

i mean, this IS deadpool

2
GGKotakuGG•

He'd probably do it for the lulz

This sucks, but hopefully this stuff eventually becomes available as bonus footage.

Ghost5410•

Probably had to be cut to make it avoid being NC-17, which would be a death sentence.

Limon_Lime37k + 48k Knight Commander - Order of the GET•

Yeah, I could see Deadpool being NC-17. Let's hope we get a nice Unrated version for blu ray.

12
ParogarOPHad a transphobic racist slave sneeze•

Not gonna happen (at lest not with this scene).

0†

By which they mean it will be on the extra special collector's edition for an extra $20 a couple of months after we've all bought the standard edition.

4
Templar_Knight07•

I thought Deadpool was already R-rated? I was pretty sure they made it explicit that it was going to be an adults only film, no kids allowed unless with parents' permission.

1
Ghost5410•

NC-17 means "No kids allowed at all." R-rated means kids can see it, as long as their parents are with them.

2
Darkling5499•

and a lot of the big chain theaters won't show NC-17 films, at least not during prime times.

4
Shippoyasha•

They already did change the Rosie O'Donnell reference into Jose Canseco (who even remembers Canseco anymore?) And then cheekily adding 'I am not a damsel in distress' line in trailers was pretty obvious PR angle they were aiming for. They are also packaging it as a bit of a romance movie for Valentine's.

SJW input or no, these companies often will play it cheeky this way. I do agree that they should just try to not care about that kind of negativity if possible. It IS Deadpool.

10
Templar_Knight07•

Kinda pisses me off that they won't be sticking to Deadpool's comics a little more and bringing in Death, I liked her portrayal in the game, but then we'll just have to wait and see I guess.

1
ParogarOPHad a transphobic racist slave sneeze•

No. They stated very clearly this won't even make it to the DVD or Blu-ray because, "it will offend too many people."

6
RavenscroftRaven•

After all, South Park is a failed enterprise because it offended too many people.

Probably has something to do with trans.

Rape/trans is the only two things I could guess.

Let's cut back on the speculation please

EDIT:You might actually be right, but I think any censorship was most likely to avoid an NC-17 rating, rather than to appease whiny people on the internet. Rape would likely fall under this.

7
StarMagus•

Or it could be that after watching and going over the version they filmed they weren't happy with it and how it flowed with the rest of the story. I mean you can have the funniest mean spirited joke in the world but if you as a director aren't happy with it, there is no reason to include it in the final release.

2
jamesensor•

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with the both of you.

NC-17 is like the AO ESRB rating. Nobody's going to want to carry it because of the stigma that it carries. So, if they want to make any money off this movie, it'll have to be Chinese algebra level hard-R.

Also, if the joke don't work, it don't work. You can write a wild and crazy Deadpool-style, but once you put it out on film it doesn't necessarily land. It happens.

3
StarMagus•

Very good points. Deadpool getting a NC-17 rating would have been a death sentence for the film, and they probably had to fight with the property right holders just to let them get a hard R rating.

2
StarMagus•

Meh, I don't see a problem with a director of a movie deciding that some of the jokes they filmed went too far, were in poor taste, or were offensive and as such they aren't funny or something they want to stand behind.

As much as people on this forum claim to want artists to have the freedom to present the art that they want to, people seem to forget that sometimes that means the artist has the freedom to reject parts of their work before presenting it to the audience. There is nothing wrong with a writer writing a novel and deciding to get rid a few chapters because after re-reading and proofing his own work he's not happy ((for whatever reason)) with how it turns out.

The same is true for directors and game makers.

6
Templar_Knight07•

But then why even mention it?

There's lots of scenes and stuff that artists toss to the cutting room floor that the majority of people never even know existed, not even if some people went looking for it. The only reason we know that this scene existed is because they decided to tell us, nobody would likely have known the difference. Especially since the film hasn't even been released yet!

They want the attention, they want the potential outrage, but most of all, they want the publicity. Hatred, DOA:X, its a tried and tested formula for at least some kind of success.

-1
StarMagus•

From the interview...

"There was a bunch of stuff, honestly," said Miller when asked if he had to cut moments out of the film, as reported by ComicBook.com.

He was asked if he cut moments out of the film. That's why he mentioned it.

3
Templar_Knight07•

He could lie, it wouldn't be the first time a director has lied to a member of the press just to avoid a scene.

1
StarMagus•

Sure he could lie, but this didn't cause a scene. The fact is there was no reason for him to lie, and this is the sort of lie that's really really really easy to get caught on. Probably close to 20+ people who worked on the movie ((if not more)) were there when the scene was filmed and know about the cutting. The fact that the person asked about it in the first place suggests they might already have talked to somebody else who told them about it and are just confirming the story as well as getting the why.

Nothing good when have come from telling a lie at that point. That said we've come a long way from "Why did he even bring it up" to get to "Well even if somebody asked he could have lied."

3
ShinkuDragon•

he also could say the truth, i mean deadpool isn't a character for the average person, so i'm not surprised they came with some stuff and when looking at it went "...that sounded better in my head"

that movie about spies where they cut the church scene (which made it to the BD, i fo-oh kingsman!) was pretty dissonant with the rest of the movie bar the beginning, and the movie didn't really NEED the scene either.

i prefer it with the BD content in and was annoyed when they cut it out, but upon seeing it i notice it wasn't nothing to get mad over except the loss of an action scene.

2
Drakaris•

Too vulgar? Fuck outta here. You're making a movie about Deadpool and you're concerned with vulgarity? Then don't make a movie about fucking Deadpool, go make a My Little Pony movie. I mean what kind of an idiot makes a movie about DEADPOOL while thinking "I gotta be careful not to offend someone and hurt their feelings." Who would've thunk that one of the most psychotic, mentally insane, violent Marvel heroes can be vulgar and offensive... Jesus fucking Christ, morons...

6
AdamrisesMisogymaster of the White Guy Defense Force•

You know. I am all for fighting censorship. But it really sounds like the two actors just improvised most of the scene and it went a lot of places everyone else didn't want to go. Normal stuff that likely happens in a lot of movies.

There doesn't seem to have been some public outrage or crazy attacks. No attempt to placate some offendatron group. Just "wow, lets not do that."

Why they felt the need to release this statement and talk about it, is just for controversy. And it worked, now we are talking about it.

Shit, is everyone here becoming just as offended by minor things as the rest of them?

6
Limon_Lime37k + 48k Knight Commander - Order of the GET•

Ehhhhhhh, probably not. They film multiple versions of scenes all the time. I mean in the different trailers, its already shows a scene of them talking and it was different each time. Though the way the director talks in the article, he comes off as kind of a beta with his "heretical" talk.

5
Templar_Knight07•

Two different ratings versions, I've seen it aye. The end of the one tells them to go for the r-rated trailer (which frankly mostly changes the swearing usage, little else.

1
daknik•

Eventually all the scenes will be released, however it may take a few years.

5
weltallic•

"We don't want to censor anything! We just want creators to be socially responsible enough to censor themselves."

5
SwearWords•

Dammit. There better be an unrated special directors edition cut extended bonus version release of this flick when it's out on bluray.

4
ParogarOPHad a transphobic racist slave sneeze•

No. They already said the bar scene was too "vulgar" (in terms of dialogue) to make it to the Blu-ray. Which leads me to think it's either rape joke or trans joke. Has to be! I can't even imagine it being anything else.

1†
trulyElse•

Could have been an entire German musical number about how the holocaust never happened.

6
Orgell_Evaan•

All they have to do is bring in Mel Brooks as a contributing director, and they're golden.

So, trans joke falls under same category as rape? What a BS

But there's no way, the film is rated R isn't it? How could something be so offensive as to be impossible to make it into such a film?

1
The_Hectic_Glow•

It was too vulgar for them to even shoot, from what I understood. It was something that Ryan Reynolds and T.J. Miller wrote on their own and brought to the director, who shot it down.

So, at the very least, it's not a case of studio meddling. We'll never really know whether it was because they were worried about outrage, or if it was just more offensive than it was funny.

1
breadite112•

Hopefully someone saved the scenes and they leak them on the internet.

3
bryoneill11•

Comic Book Resources need to die already... They must be celebrating this self censorship fiasco

3
infinitebird•

This is just hollywood "don't get nc-17 ratings" politics. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

3
d0x360•

So this is like every movie ever made that was designed to come in rated R

2
Pointless_arguments•

Not necessarily censorship. Maybe they just felt that it didn't fit with the tone of the movie and didn't want it to seem overly mean-spirited. Maybe they thought it would turn the audience off the character or something. Editors cut scenes from every movie, there's no reason to think PC culture had anything to do with this. Plus the trailers seem to be directly pandering to SJW's, in one clip the woman even says "I'm not a damsel in distress" so I doubt it would have been written with particularly un-pc content.

I'll buy the uncensored DVD.

I'll probably still go see this in theaters because honestly Deadpool is the only superhero I give a shit about. Next to One Punch Man, I guess... it seems I have a thing for parody/non-serious heroes, hmm...
