Daily F2L Discussion - Case 6

Resource

Sorry for the delay! I've been crazy busy at work.

Case 6

Setup: R' U' R U2 R' U R d'

Most important solution: y' U R' U' R U2 R' U R

Angles: Easy from FL + BR. Harder from FR + BL.

Mirror: Case 5

Discussion of Case 6:

This case is the mirror image of case 5. If you know how to handle that case intuitively, then you should be able to handle this intuitively, too. From the FL and BR, the general idea is to hide the corner, move the edge 90 degrees, unhide the corner (which forms the pair), and finally, insert the pair. If you're new to F2L and need a crash course on hiding pieces, please see the discussion of case 5. From the other two angles, it's best to do a single cube rotation, although I've included some more advanced algorithms for these angles.

It's important not to confuse cases 5 and 6, as they look somewhat similar. If you try to solve a case from its incorrect angle, then you may end up accidentally burying your edge piece, which is counter productive. It's important to realize that case 5 is easily handled from the FR and BL, while case 6 is easy from the FL and BR. Once you figure out which case you have, you need to do (at most) 1 cube rotation to set up the cube for an easy insertion.

There are a few ways to tell the two cases apart. First, note that the edge piece needs to be moved 90 degrees clockwise in case 5, and counterclockwise in 6. Second, note that case 5 reduces to case 1, while case 6 reduces to case 2. You can glance at the orientation of the corner and immediately know which case you'll have upon repositioning the edge.
