Shit man.. One time I fell asleep driving and woke up on the other lane of a 2 lane highway. Ever since then, I have been very good about pulling over if I get drowsy. A 10 minute nap or even just 5 minutes would help me perk up. In time I learned also that in lieu of a nap, I could snack on shit like dry cereal or something that would help keep me awake. I also learned that sometimes just stopping for a good hearty breakfast will also help keep me alert and driving safely.

One time I actually did drive off the road. I knew I was drowsy and I made a decision to take a nap at the state line marker, just a few miles up the road. Within about 3 to 5 miles of driving I woke up in the opposite side's ditch going 60mph.

Fuckin be careful about falling asleep on the road. Feeling sleepy? Just pull over on the damn shoulder and lay back for 5 minutes. Spend 5 minutes getting a burrito to feed you some energy. Those 5 minutes might save your life, someone else, your job, car, reputation, etc...

I know too many people who have fallen asleep while driving & were in horrific accidents, and are very lucky to be alive.

Believe me, I know how close I was to things being much worse.

When I was a teenager I dozed off once behind the wheel on the highway, and had 5 friends with me. It was a split second, and I'm so thankful I learned my lesson so young.

That shit's scary. I think everyone has a driving story that ends in "Did I seriously just almost die?"

I went to make a left turn out of a parking lot onto the main road, and my tires spun out a bit on some slush. This led to my car being about halfway in the road with oncoming traffic a few seconds away, before my tires gained traction and I was safely in the other lane. I no longer fuck around with left turns or U-turns.

Too scary when there's traffic!

I've had one winter-related accident. On my way to work, I hit black ice on a freeway and fishtailed out of control across a bridge. Just at the end of the bridge I completely lost control and went off the road down a huge hill (glad I didn't roll my truck). Half a second earlier and I would've been over the side of the bridge. Yet I still went to work that day, I was just a bit late. What a dummy.

I had this problem when I was working about an hour away from home. Work started at 6, had to get there by 5:40, woke up at 4:30. Something along those lines, anyways. I always had to pull over once I got off the freeway to take a nap or down half a liter of coffee. Usually the most that did was keep me in zombie mode long enough to survive the rest of the drive (which was long, boring levee roads for about half an hour). One time it didn't work and I feel asleep at the wheel at a really, really bad time: on the giant arching bridge that led into the city. What woke me up was the sound of my hubcap slamming against and grinding on the concrete median. At the very least it woke me right the hell up.

Since then, I've been driving like I'm preparing for driver's test.

Yea back in 2010 I had a similar situation. 25 mile drive on a dark highway to work at 530am. That's where I learned dry cereal in a baggie keeps me awake.

That's terrifying. I've never fallen asleep driving but I used to have a friend who would lean his head back as if he was about to take a peaceful nap whenever he drove anywhere. I would sit passenger and basically stare at him the whole time cause I was so convinced he was going to eventually pass out. He was just way too relaxed for my comfort.

I was once in Hawaii with my family and cousins. One time, late at night, driving back from somewhere I decided to go in my cousin's car with my uncle driving. It was a long drive and it was dark so a couple minutes in, everyone was asleep except me and my uncle. Eventually, I started to see him start to nod off, then he would swerve into the bumps on the side of the road, which would wake him up. He did that probably 20 to 30 times and we were on the side of a mountain. Scariest ride ever.

Almost happened to me too as well. After a long day of work, I was driving home and I recall dozing off a couple times for a couple seconds. Thank goodness nothing bad happened but omfg that more than scared the shit out of me.

I actually know someone who has a dream catcher in their car

did they have any good dreams?

No pillow? No problem! Just crash your car to release the built-in emergency nap cushion!

Once cars are self-driving, this will actually be ok advice.

A little kooky, but a lot less detrimental.
