Flying Fish
Hey y'all. Here's a poem I've been working on for quite awhile and today it reached a state that I'm kind of happy with but I figured I would look for some outside critique. Thanks in advance!

Flying Fish
More birds fly closer to the sun
than those that fly near to the sea,
as Icarus, with wings undone;
Father crafted those wings to free
(though seeking with a clouded eye)
the wingless boy and wingless beast.
Above, the perils of the sky,
the searing sun of violent gold,
the melting of the wax that binds
their wings—the essence of the soul.
Encouraged by the lofty air,
they break and plummet to the cold;
for dear Father did not prepare
for burning sun and water’s chills
and left his children unaware
of drowning icy water swills
—I find it a sad story akin to the drowning of Icarus
that God forgot to give birds gills.
