A Lover Scorned (My attempt at a villanelle)
I beg you, consume me, O mighty Death!
Lest curséd Sorrow and unwanted Grief
Devour me wholly in one mighty breath.
Feast on my sweet flesh and turn it to earth;
Drink on my blood to your utmost relief.
I beg you, consume me, O mighty Death!
His love, once profuse, now suffers a dearth,
And endless proof of his blatant mischief
Devour me wholly in one painful breath.
Oh that you will just secure me a berth
In silent Hades; and pray, sir, be brief!
I beg you, consume me, O mighty Death!
For I hear the lewd words she chants in mirth
“Oh how he can,” boasts that red-headed thief,
“Devour me wholly in one blissful breath.”
And, think, for naught else but her narrow girth,
He’ll leave me broken with betrayed belief!
I beg you, consume me, O mighty Death!
Devour me wholly in one gentle breath.
