I find the Irony of this to be very strong. BTC-E is the longest standing exchange without any major problems now, is it not? Were they not before BitStamp?
Yet they are still mired in mystery. It reads like a financial mystery novel.

I was under the impression that holding USD in an exchange was safe.
It's now looking like I lost my $30,000 USD.

Long story short: keep your cryptocurrencies on devices you can trust, and if you need to exchange them, return them to your devices as soon as possible. Online wallets are not under your control (unless you're literally hosting a server in your house).
