Ironic given that most Americans probably don't even know what a salad looks like...

I always thought tossing the salad meant something else though.
This salad has octopus tentacles in it.

America is not a "melting pot", it's a house salad, and people are constantly trying to pick out the parts they don't like.
Cant do that as easily with a soup...
This is actually a true phenomenon and its referred to in human geography as a "tossed salad" and is the opposite of a "melting pot". Where a melting pot is a system in which many different peoples from different cultures and different backgrounds forsake their individual cultural traits to become a more mixed culture altogether, a tossed salad is a system in which people live while maintaining a certain level of cultural distance from a new country and maintaining pre-existing cultural values (I.e. Little Havana, Chinatown, Germantown). Neither one is void of benefits and detriments; however, it does present some interesting views on cultural values and acculturation into a new culture.
So... Does that make Japan the melting pot? Their saying IS "one country, one race, one culture" to be fair.

Eyy, das me.
I think that's what the banner says above the entrance at Immigration.
I think that one says something about work and freedom, doesn't it? I could be wrong though: my German is a little rusty.
Their other saying is shouga nai but it doesn't stop them putting ginger into shit, does it?
This only works in Osaka.

I wouldn't know. I get my information from Wikipedia, for lack of a better source. :)
