Tea Disaster: or Time for a New Gaiwan

Discussion

Had to happen near the end of the day too, didnt it. Cleaning out at the back kitchen, and got a slip and hit just perfectly to break it cleanly in two.

Luckily its fairly clean, so i will glue it back together at least for memory sake while i order a few new ones(been meaning to get a new one for home anyway so why not).

His last tea of the day was some Oolong, i dont know what i will do for the Friday morning without him. I guess ill have to dig out one of those damnable ball strainers(of which i have plenty as people have gifted me a bunch under the 'You like tea right' process).

What disasters have you all had/averted. And more importantly, what kind of tea should i drink at home to commiserate and what kind of gaiwan shall i nab now that i have the excuse to buy a few.

If it has a lot of sentimental value you might get a kintsugi artist to fix it. I did that with my favorite kyusu and it's even more awesome now!

If it's clean you can use some JB Marine Weld to put it back together. Safe at high temps.

Yeah, but is it food safe? I'd be afraid of plasticizers leaching into the tea, both for the sake of health and taste.

Good idea, i had some marine apoxy around at home. Though i still want to buy a couple new ones and cant fault the excuse. I think even if i get it back together, it will get regulated to a trophy/rough work piece.

I slammed the lid down too hard on my first gaiwan while brewing some white tea. Luckily the cup didn't have hot water in it, just some leaves. It broke into probably 6 peices or so, but I used waterproof wood glue to put it back together. It took probably an hour. I know I probably shouldn't use that gaiwan (I've gotten 2 new ones since then), But every so often I feel like using it, and I do. The tea doesn't taste like glue or anything, so I guess that's a good sign. Regaurdless, I got 2 new gaiwan from YS. I got the "Autumn Leaves" one, which I like. I also got the "Turned" one, that has brown accents, and I like how the cup fits into the base at the bottom, instead of just resting on it.

I never buy a single gaiwan anymore. I buy them in twos because I always break some piece at some point. I can't tell you how many I've been through over the years.

I like the idea of getting two at once, since i tend to use this at work the most and i cant count out it getting broke again here. I think ill salvage this one and keep him at home while i wait on two others.
