Wow ! thank you for this ! Will this be in next release of plasma?

It's not released with Plasma, so it depends on your distro.

Is it possible to encrypt the files locally before uploading?

4
aelogOP•

Uhm, good question. It's not possible to encrypt "on the fly" (i.e. the slave does not encrypt before uploading). But you can manually encrypt a file and then copy it to a gdrive folder, which will upload it.

We definitely need an overlay mode for KIO. I'd love to wrap cipher KIO around others and transparently encrypt my files on GDrive, WebDAV, Dropbox or MEGA.

Yes. There are a few ways:

  1. Use 7zip and set a password before uploading

  2. If you want this automated + filename encryption, there are things like Cryptomator (https://cryptomator.org/) and BoxCryptor (https://www.boxcryptor.com/en)

  3. While not exactly a substitute, you might want to look into things like distribute file systems (e.g. IPFS https://ipfs.io/) if you don't trust large cloud providers

In terms of availability and failure-resistance the IPFS sucks in my experience.

Usually you only get good availability if a lot of people share your files, if you only share it between a couple of your machines, chances are the files are offline if enough of your machines are.

Wait for FileCoin or Swarm, that costs though.

SpiderOak will do it, but it's a paid service. But then, if I'm going to pay for any cloud storage, it'll be that one.

Is this an official KDE app? Will all KDE based distros like Kubuntu and SUSE eventually get it?

1
aelogOP•

It's an official KDE project. I think OpenSUSE is already trying to package it.

1
einar77•

Already packaged in KDE:Extra for those interested.

Simpler solution. Mount Google Drive using google-drive-ocamlfuse to mount the drive as a filesystem, then it's available to everything.

10
aelogOP•

This is nice but I'm not sure I would call it simpler (it seems CLI only?).

2
beermad•

Well it needs to be mounted initially with a command (I do it from my KDE autostart), but once it's mounted, it's like any other filesystem on your computer.

Insync is stafting to get more and more competition

It's a shame it doesn't use fuse internally so this works with any other app, rather than just KDE .

2
aelogOP•

There is an interesting discussion about kio vs fuse going on on r/kde: https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/55820t/kio_gdrive_10_released/?st=itr7lx40&sh=9456fa9c

Holy shit

Any plans to port one drive over too?

1
aelogOP•

I don't think it's planned for now.

Nice!

Interesting, but I still prefer Box for that, it uses webdav secure, a very known protocol, is GDrive protocol known?

1
aelogOP•

It's using the Google Drive REST api.

2
waltercool•

Does it work fast enough against Rest API? Because the http protocol shouldn't be quite fast for multiple folder access or uploading files I think

1
aelogOP•

I'm not sure if it's possible to work with Google Drive with something different than the rest api. I think all the Drive SDKs out there are using the rest api under the hood.

What a stupidity, sucking Google's balls... Those KDE guys are destroying the whole KDE compilation.

"Those KDE guys are destroying the whole KDE compilation"

Oh no! Our secret plan is out! To empower users to use what they want, but only if they want it! You realize of course that due to you exposing our evil scheme you must die? Quick henchmen, lower him down into the pool of lava containing laser-eyed codfish/raptor hybrids!

I'm with you man, they even use Macbooks, WTF?

I thought they fought for freedom but supporting Google is like... Bad news for Plasma and KDE related software fans and contributors (I'm a translator)
