Now, the censorship is very, very minor, I grant you that. The same thing was done with the Senran Kagura series.

But it still irks me that you would release a game and say it's uncensored while removing something so minor.

One, the ages weren't changed, they were removed. The girls are still the same age. Anything that would have been illegal would still now be illegal.

Two, again, the major problem I have isn't that the ages were removed, it's the duplicity. PQube said the game would be uncensored. Removing ages, which is clearly done to appease people like you, is censorship, never mind how minor. If they had said, "It will be uncensored except for the ages being removed from the profiles," I would have grumbled but I would have accepted it. But they didn't say that. They said it would be uncensored.

Three, they're fictional characters, they're not actually having sex, and like all games of this type any "improper" skin is covered by lightbeams. So far as I know, the most you get is explicit and implied groping. Hell, the "climax" scene is just a kiss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgvys11tCUA&user=UC08MbnPCWkl83Jpg32ap3Fw

The game would not be illegal if the characters were underage. At least, not in the USA.

Not in every state. Some places are 16.

It's a justified change.

Censorship is never justified.

But it's still illegal to have anyone under 18 depicted nude with some exceptions. Though I'm not sure about the legality of it all, movies like Pretty Baby and American Beauty have underage actresses depicted nude. I know they needed parental consent and a representative from Child Services or some other department to be present at the time of filming to make sure everything is above board.

I'm pretty sure there's also an exception made for video games/comics/manga/anime characters as long as the characters are not based on real people - For example, Dragonar Academy has Eco who looks like a 12-year-old girl but is really a newborn/infant dragon depicted nude a lot and Sylvia is 16 and is stated to be as such in the adapted manga who is shown topless quite a few times. Still got an Older Teen rating somehow. Ratings boards are weird.

For this game, it seems they're going the Senran Kagura route of having the girls' ages unlisted and you can look them up online if you want to know. Same thing happened with Dead or Alive 1-4 for the underage characters before they all got aged up 2 years.

Actually depending on the way child porn laws are worded the change would be required to make the game legal.

While not a dealbreaker for me, they did promise no censorship, and though minor, this is censorship.

complaining about age being changed

We have to come to a compromise sometimes.

Databreaks•

Fucking this. It's not like #FE or anything. It's just the same decision they made for Senran Kagura. If you take the ages off entirely then there is no chance for ESRB to find something objectionable due to some specific character's age in relation to being sexy or showing skin or whatever. Not worth picking apart.

Shippoyasha•

I don't blame the game devs in a way because social panic of sexy teens is so over the top in America.

As long as it doesnt alter the gameplay, visual, content and actually do affect something [costume for example] then it's okay IMO

also i think it's justified as it is to escape the "underage" hell they will get, Xseed also do it in SK [mirai] to avoid underage character problem so it's fine in my eye, it's for avoiding real LEGAL trouble not some morality bullshit.

the_harkonnenMove sea lion! For great ethics!•

I'm not bugged by it since there is a legit reason for doing it, and getting the rest of the game uncensored. They could have said "We aren't censoring any content or gameplay, but we have to adjust or remove references to ages to avoid legal issues." I don't think anyone would complain under those circumstances. Thoughts?

Databreaks•

If they said that it would be too obvious that PQube were 'tricking' the ratings board.

lets be real here, this is legal problem as the age restriction between japan and US is difference, either they cant release the game in US because "depiction of minor/underage" or they remove it. Xseed also remove it in SK [mirai] because of the same reason.

this is legal problem and it's a legit move to remove it

PortableNiche•

I'm not arguing that however they should have been upfront with it and everyone would've been understanding, the problem here is they (PQube) chose to say outright that the game will be uncensored, meaning all of it will be there, when that isn't the case.

The problem people have is these small lies could easily become bigger ones, if PQube at the beginning just apologized for not mentioning and moved on then there wouldn't be a big issue than it is but they chose to join in mocking anyone that sees this as an issue.

I'm not wrong for pointing out their lies, they shouldn't have been lying in the first place.

Jekless•

By taking out the ages of the characters, they're dodging more bullets than Neo. As long as that doesn't affect the plot, it's fine by me.

noisekeeperUnited the nations over MovieBob•

It does suck and make their previous statement of totally uncensored dumb but seeing as this does have precedent (Senran Kagura) it means that we can actually point to a specific reason why (dumb US laws) it is out of their hands.

My opinion is that I'd rather have it removed than changed if given the choice between the two. Even without the ages in SK you could still tell they were in High School, and they didn't change any lines about their ages like #FE or Xenoblade did (which in those cases are even more stupid because they went ahead and censored even more things anyway).

4
Loresong•

Similar thing with the recent steam release of MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies as Censored Gaming reports characters were aged up. This after IFI also said they would not censor games after all the edits made to Monster Monpiece. But now these claims of uncensored are clearly just marketing to get you to pre-order, as the companies are showing they have no plan to actually stick to those statements.

3
Unplussed•

Non-issue if it's just ages being removed, as long as the rest of the content is there.

3
makenocent•

i don't find age showing or not a big deal. I don't even consider that censorship.

2
centrum5555•

i dont think its bad, since we all know the legal status and this is already implied. i wont fault a developer for removing the swastika's in german releases either its something required by law.

what i want to say is, if they saw they wont censor the game i still fully expect them to abide by the law. which demands this censorship.

2
Rygar_the_Beast•

it's all about boobs and butts.

The age had to be done or else they probable wouldn't be able to release the game.

2
MayonnaiseGendered•

Complaining about this is utterly absurd.

At this point you are wanting your cake and wanting to eat it. If the sacrafice for no censorship in the game is the change of a single digit by 1... You've gotta accept thats a decent compremise for everyone.

It's a fictional character, it doesn't have an age... it hasn't lived 15/16 years of life and experienced everything that that entails. Sure if the differance was 40 years, you might have a good case to complain... But it's one year, it's a borderline meaningless change.

2
ZettaMaximum•

Not a dealbreaker for me. The same has been done for the Senran Kagura series, only difference is that PQube wasn't upfront about it. They probably didn't even think of it as censorship, seeing as how XSeed has been doing the same thing.

Here the response they gave to Censored Gaming https://techraptor.net/content/heres-why-pqube-removed-the-girls-ages-in-valkyrie-drive-bhikkhuni

Again I reiterate, if they were upfront about this then there wouldn't be an issue but they chose to pretend it isn't an issue as well as mocking people that pointed it out to them, at this point if they apologize to their customers and promise to be more transparent in the future then we would all be happy.
