Fresh Lovers

almost touching
cold fingertips
cracked lips
they could feel the tension rising
with their heartbeats
 
he asked her if she was cold
she looked at her hands
rubbed her fingers together
and told him only
the tips
 
he admitted frozen toes
frost-bitten ears
and a red nose
were things he was familiar with
she asked him if he was cold
 
hand closed around fingers
early stages of a lover’s dialogue
they turned hands to lock
in place and greed began
to surface
 
shifted male stature welcomed
her petite frame to his side
she rested head upon risen chest
and swirled fingertips along his limbs
 
he polished assurance
in her neck and arms
closed his eyes and thought aloud
“Damn, I’m lucky.”
and her small body shuddered with delight
a smile pulled across her young face
