Semi-daily hero tips. Day 14: Broodmother

Tip

PREVIOUS HEROES

DISCLAIMER

A lot of you probably know about the weekly hero discussion, but that often ends up in a meta discussion (whether or not the hero needs buffs, etc) or a meme war than actual tips to play, itemize and build the hero.

This is what I'd like to do. Please discuss any notes I made and possible improvements while also giving tips of your own if you have them.

The roles, skill builds and item builds, as well as a lot of the notes are my opinion on matters and should not be seen as a must do or don't. Also remember that almost every single build or role is situationally possible.

A lot of the tips on heroes were also mentioned in tsunami's amazing hero tips series he did over the last couple of years.

Broodmother

Notes:

  • Check the enemy's items for sentries (and missing sentries) constantly.
  • Buy sentries if you know they have vision of you.
  • If you're out of tango's and still in a sentry war, consider quelling blade.
  • Try to be very quick with destroying enemy sentries with tango or QB.
  • You can deny allied creeps with spiderlings to get spiderites
  • Use spiders to block enemies, block camps, stack camps, scout, etc.
  • Manta gets your passive and you can debuff dust with it.
  • If you know they have vision, there is no reason to not drop a web. You still get the regen and MS
  • Keep a web in the rosh pit mid/late game
  • Versus: Either use both sentries or drop the spare one somewhere safe so brood can't see what you did.
  • Counters: Kotl (long range AOE to kill spiders), Axe (taunt + counter helix, note that you can both cut the wave in-lane, which lessens the counter. Getting blight stone and ult at lvl 6 can net you a kill), Sand king (entire moveset counters brood), alchemist (acid spray), Leshrac + Lina, Kunkka, DS, EarthShaker, Bristle, Tiny, Timber (AOE), CM (AOE + root), LC (AOE + ult) Slardar (ult + crush), Naga, Meepo (Brood only has single target damage, these have AOE + root)
  • Brood's ult is purgeable (also by medusa ult) Not as of 7.00 (/u/DotA__2)
  • Friends: Kotl (Illuminate + mana for brood nuke), Omniknight, Dazzle (heal bombs) (/u/YaelYelilstrider)
  • Good versus: Medusa, Ursa, AW, Clinkz, Silencer, Riki (buy orchid, they have no stun so you can easily run in the trees, they also don't really have an escape if you run them down with BKB), WD (ultimate is fucked up if you get out of vision, his stun will most likely only hit you once), TA (Spiderlings clear refraction + TA has no stun), Luna, WK (hard to target single target spells with spiders around, no escape), Tinker (no escape, countered by orchid and BKB)
  • The best thing you can do to help a broodmother in her lane is by not being there. Apply pressure to other lanes while she is getting ganked.
  • Your spiderlings should not be near you 99% of the time. You should be farming the jungle, cutting the lane, etc, etc.
  • If you want to teamfight as brood, try to catch out running heroes or the enemies back line. Don't be in the heat of battle.
  • In lane - try to pull aggro near creeps while invisible to see if they have sentries. If you are able to pull aggro, they have vision. (/u/not_blathers_the_owl)
  • after the T1 tower is dead, you can throw 1 spider ahead of the creep wave to see where / if they have sentries anywhere. (/u/not_blathers_the_owl)
  • Neutral creeps in the jungle utilize the players' sentries. So, if a jungle camp starts attacking you while you're invisible, there's a sentry there. (/u/not_blathers_the_owl)

Role: Solo lane (mostly offlane), loner

Item build:

  • Soul ring, (OoV + 2 sage masks if not counter picked), brown boots, orchid --> bloodthorn, phase, BKB, Echo Sabre, EoS, SnY
  • Alternative builds:
    • Push build with teamfight and carry buff: Soul ring, brown boots, orchid --> bloodthorn, BKB, Phase, Vlad's, AC
    • semi-late. good vs tide, axe, DS, meepo: Midas, Radiance, anything situational
    • anti-tank build: Solar crest, Phase, Vlad's, AC, Deso, BKB

Skill build: lvl 1 web, max nuke --> web --> passive
