PART 8
Thank you all for the lovely comments, I appreciate it very very much :)
Original prompt, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7
The bodies from the trees had all but stopped now though it wouldn't be surprising to see another greet them around the next bend. "It must be the altitude" Patrick said peering outside and observing his surroundings.
"Huh?" Julie said in a casual tone. She was barely talking to him and wanted to remind him so but he had caught her intrigue.
"There appears to be no more bodies along this road which means there are less of those monsters here, I don't know if its the place or something else but i'm betting on the altitude. There's something about being high up which deters them, the advice from the radio wasn't bad advice after all" He deliberately avoided eye contact with Julie as he spoke, it would only make the situation feel more awkward.
"That's good" She said in a seemingly uninterested tone, he thought she would be happier about that. Less monsters meant less chance of being horrifically killed. "We're almost there" She said changing the subject, but she was right. The surroundings started to appear more familiar now.
"Where's the government in all this? Where's the military? we haven't heard a single shot not even in the city apart from when I fired my gun"
Oh them? I had forgotten about them Morteus laughed They won't be helping anybody
"Perhaps they're dead" Julie said with no remorse, no doubt Azrael had told her something similar to Morteus.
"It's not even been a day, they can't all be dead" Patrick said with a glimmer of hope
You underestimate us, how cute
Patrick's will to ignore Morteus was failing, with each passing hour his desire to respond to Morteus grew. He had to pinch himself to stop.
"So why has nobody come? Why has nobody fought back?" What was Azrael saying to her? How had he filled her head with so much doubt so quickly? "There's something Azrael said to me that got me thinking, he said... when I named him he called Azrael a lowly being" Patrick was surprised, what could he mean by that?
"Azrael is real? The angel of death?" Patrick pondered that for a moment. How is the angel of death a 'lowly being'?
He's dead
Both Patrick and Julie looked to each other as they were both told the exact same thing. A long pause followed.
Oh? You expect me to tell you how? I'll let you squander your thoughts about that one for a while
The car neared the final bend before the retreat when Patrick noticed something unusual between the trees "Stop" He told Julie holding his hand out in front of her. She stopped the car.
"What?" She asked angrily. It was going to take her a while to forgive me for this Patrick thought.
"There's something there, I saw a... I think it was a Jeep" Patrick got out of the car and motioned for Julie to follow, they quietly approached the retreat the rest of the way. It was a decent sized wood cabin like those you would rent out on a weekend holiday away to some lush landscape, but this one had a few twists of its own. Patrick noticed the small symbol above the roof where the door resided was red, that meant someone had entered the premises. He took his gun out from the small of his back and poised it forward ready to take anyone that appeared at gunpoint with Julie just behind him. He slowly walked up to the house when his foot got stuck in a hole, Julie had to twist his foot out and smiled at him and rolled her eyes. At least there's still something there Patrick thought to himself.
Entering through the front door with pistol in front he scanned the lounge, it had a decorated stone fireplace which had been recently lit with a thick wooden mantelpiece on top. Above the mantel piece was the head of a Stag he had shot on one of his many hunting trips. The floor housed a carved wooden table and two comfy light peach sofas facing opposite each other on top of a rug which almost covered the entire floor. What was next to the door was the important part, a safe lockbox with guns and ammo for situations like this. The casing showed evidence of an attempted break in but you would need tonnes of pressure to break this one open, Patrick put the code in after giving Julie the pistol to stand guard.
He took out a 12 gauge shotgun with 12 shells and another 9mm pistol with two full clips. Now feeling confident of himself patrick shouted "Come out!" and aimed the shotgun down the corridor which lead away from the lounge.
2 young men and a young woman came from around the corner with curious looks. They saw the shotgun and put their hands up with wide eyes, "Shit!" one of them shouted before darting back around the corner.
"Tell your friend to get his ass back here or I'll blow a hole in your fucking head"
Patrick... I'm impressed
"Daniel, come on" The man with the shotgun pointed at him shouted with annoyance.
"I'm coming I'm coming" Daniel came back around the corner with his hands in the air and his head hanging in shame.
"Now" Patrick said, aiming his gun higher at them causing them to flinch "Who the fuck are you?"
Bit short this one but I wanted to end it here so the next one is longer, you will see :)
