What do you think of the sleep info update?

Sorry if this has been commented on, I couldn't see anything in recent posts.

My Fitbit has updated to include sleep stages: awake, R.E.M. Light and deep sleep. Last night was my first collection of data.

I think it's much improved from the previous info it used to give you. Which didn't always show me as restless or awake and conflicted with my sleep app. It will be interesting to analyse my sleep for sure because I never feel it's great quality.

However when I woke this morning bang on 0800 (no alarm) I looked at the time... naturally. Then rolled over and grabbed my phone to open the app.

It's included the 4 mins it took me from immediately waking up to opening the app as 'awake' time overall through the night.

That just seems a bit odd to me... I mean once I'm awake in the morning I'm awake, I don't really fall back to sleep again. Surely it doesn't need to count that in?

Anyone else got thoughts on it?

Edit: I can't type/spell - and I've probably still missed bits.

Does the new information take a while to kick in? I woke up this morning saw the notice about the new sleep insights. But when I check my stats for last night it just says no stages I'm just wondering if maybe from tonight onwards it will keep the new stats?

This is the same situation I'm in as well.

When I synced just now it took awhile for the sleep info to kick in. I thought at first it hadn't recorded any, but it finally showed up after a minute or so for me.

curxxx•

It's been ... 3 hours? and counting for me... Synced a couple times, restarted the app a couple times, even my phone... :P

shrug

It hates me :P

SpatialFX•

Just for last night or for all the sleep you've tracked with your current tracker?

3
_hi_im_new_here•

Just started the new tracking last night. The previous nights are were the usual sleep tracking bar graph we're used to.

2
Hottiemcgee•

Same here! Nadda for stages. Just the regular restless asleep awake chart.

Clarabel74OP•

Mine seemed to upload pretty quickly after synchronising. I've got a charge 2 if that means anything...

I woke up this morning and it was great suprise to see those new stats about my sleep. I like that they are trying to do something new. If your tracker supports it, try to switch to "sensitive" sleep measuring in the Fitbit app. Maybe it helps to be more accurate.

SpatialFX•

Just for last night's sleep or for all sleeps using your current tracker? (Which tracker do you have?)

2
lexaxelaexl•

I've got HR2. Just go to account -> advanced settings -> sleep sensitivity

2
SpatialFX•

I was asking if you had stats for other nights of sleep or just last night.

2
lexaxelaexl•

Oh, sorry. Just for a last night

2
Clarabel74OP•

That's a great help, thank you - except I'm working night duty tonight so will have to wait untill i sleep tomorrow to see how 'sensitive' my fitbit is :)

1
frozen-landscape•

The chargeHR is not going to be supporting the sleep stages option. So I think it's just the sensitivity switch on/off they are talking about.

1
Rashboots•

I wonder how long this takes to kick in, I got a notification about it today but so far I have no data in any sleep stages, just my usual sleep log :(

8
SpatialFX•

The charge HR doesnt support sleep stages. just Alta HR, Charge 2, and Blaze. That being said, I dont see additional sleep stats for my Charge 2 right now either.

3
Anus_Blenders•

I have a charge 2 and I see the new screen for sleep stages but it says no stages for last night.

5
Rashboots•

Ah, I HAD a HR, I have the Charge 2 now (since September last year), Must not have updated my flair!

Still can't see anything on my charge 2 sleep details :(

1
SpatialFX•

Yeah, still no details for me for last night either. So frustrating.

1
curxxx•

Which Fitbit do you have? My Charge 2 is showing "No Data" in Stages for every night...

I understand it might not be able to be retroactive, but even last night shows nothing...

maybe tonight...

Hobbes_Loves_Tuna•

Me and my Charge 2 are in the same boat. I was really excited when I got the pop-up about sleep stages and then really disappointed when everything was logged as no data

6
curxxx•

I just spoke to Fitbit. They said it's only out for Blaze and Alta HR users. The Charge 2 notification was sent too early, and it isn't activated for the Charge yet. In a week or so they said...

Hobbes_Loves_Tuna•

Thanks for letting me know!

1
Clarabel74OP•

Charge 2 also, not sure if it's relevant that I'm in UK??

Location shouldn't matter for updates surely?

But as already mentioned here it looks like there are discrepancies (low battery, too loose to pick up HR,position etc)

2
curxxx•

As a developer, location might be used as a factor in determining update rollout stages... But the chances of that... This is just a bug and a bad feature launch :P

Nothing over here, nothing has changed since I received the notification.

1

Same. Fitbit failed massively with this.

pretty piss poor planning on Fitbit's part then!

My sleep data is pretty much useless now until it's implemented as they've changed both the web dashboard and the app for displaying sleep/clicking on bits during the night to see when you woke up.

1
curxxx•

Really? My data hasn't changed at all, and certainly hasn't made me lose any previous data until the new feature is implemented. My dashboards look how they always have, with the addition of a new, but empty, tab.

I too, am not seeing the sleep stages with a Charge 2. This article from Engadget ( https://www.engadget.com/2017/03/27/fitbit-alta-hr-review/#/ ) has a statement from Fitbit about this:

The company explained that there could be several reasons for the discrepancy. The Alta HR could stop tracking your sleep states if you slept for less than three hours or your battery level is critically low. Also, "your tracker needs to detect your heart rate to estimate your sleep cycles. If you slept in a position that prevented your tracker from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely, you may see your sleep pattern... instead of sleep stages for the previous night."

For myself, I am probably wearing it too loosely.

AceEZ•

My tracker has HR for all night long, so I guess I'll wait and see if it kicks in tonight. It's just confusing that the screen is already showing, but no data.

3
SpatialFX•

Fitbit definitely did a poor job communicating how this feature will roll out. They could have saved us all a lot of headaches if they said:

  • What trackers will get it (this wasn't communicated in the original announcement)
  • If and why we might not see data right away
  • That the feature would be a gradual rollout
3
Raisze•

My Blaze was critically low, said welcome to sleep stages while syncing this morning but only showed actigraphy.

2
Cinn4monBun•

This is silly. I updated the app yesterday, I can see the new screen, I just checked that my Charge 2 could actually monitor my HR all through the night, and still I can't see sleep phases for tonight's sleep.

I was so looking forward to this, I'll admit I'm a little disappointed :(

2
lo-t•

Same issue here. I wonder whether the new feature is supposed to be available to everybody now. Because in my case it certainly isn't.

2
Arcticfox14•

I'm hoping this means they'll finally make an attempt at sleep-cycle-based alarm clock functionality. I experimented with a phone app that would wake me up at the lightest stage of sleep within my alarm window and it worked great, but I got tired of putting my phone under my fitted sheet each night and quit doing it. Been looking forward to Fitbit taking a swing at that for the better part of a year now.

4
nittanyRAWRlion•

Sleep Cycle was updated a while ago to include sound-based tracking. You can just put it beside your bed. I still use it, works great and just as well as putting it under the sheet.

6
Clarabel74OP•

I have sleep cycle, I never put it under my fitted sheet - just next to my pillow (even before the update) seemed to track pretty well. Have a memory foam mattress as well so initially thought it wouldn't track so well, but it's been ok.

Totally agree about the waking window and having my alarm gently wake me, a definite asset that fitbit could use!

1
tricaratops•

Was a pleasant surprise to see this new data when I opened the app this morning. It seems to be more accurate than the previous sleep tracking (picked up on me waking up twice around 4am...previously these were noted as "restless"). Also, I noticed that I woke up with 0 steps logged when usually it would track my movements during sleep and I'd wake up with 50-100 steps logged already.

3
taiboworks•

which fitbit do you own?

3
tricaratops•

Charge 2

2
taiboworks•

so you had a screen display like this on your phone? - https://marketing-pages.fitbit.com/images/sleep/features/sleep-stages-phone-render-x2-2d2c6c81d32acadcfbb78f4bee94ade2.jpg

and was it located in the same place as the old sleep info?

2
tricaratops•

Yes

2
Clarabel74OP•

Glad i wasn't the only saddo to get excited by this, this morning ;)

Agree with you about restless\awake - I've had that before.

Edit: autocorrect = autowrong

1
SidetrackedSue•

I only have a One so don't get new data displays.

I've lost the following data points:

  • Time to fall asleep

  • Actual time and for how long I am restless or awake in the night

  • Sleep efficiency

  • Times awakened

It has been over a week now and further data has been purged from the website rather than our old reporting returned.

I can sign up for Premium and get a weekly report that includes all the missing data but I need daily reports so I can correlate pain meds, previous day activities with sleep quality at night on a daily basis. If I slept well, is there something I should repeat to see if that is helping me sleep? If I had a rough night, was that due to something to be avoided?

Besides, why should I have to pay $50 a year for a weekly report when I used to get the info for free on a daily basis?

fitbit is in the business of gathering data and reselling it. I understand that. The deal I have with them is that they sell my data but they also give it to me. Since they no longer live up to that deal, I've decided to stop giving them my data and have unplugged the dongle and deleted the app from my tablet.

And I've learned that when a device is on the internet, I don't own the device. The company has complete control over it. Samsung bricked the combusting phones. And in this case, fitbit took my health tracker and turned it into a step counter with a silent alarm by removing my useful sleep data.

It's fine but I wish I knew how it compared. Data for data's sake isn't helpful beyond the first glance.

EDIT: Whoops totally missed that age tab! Awesome.

Found the comparison tab. Thanks!

2
Clarabel74OP•

I honestly get you about data for data's sake....

But in this context I'm not sure how comparing me to another 42yr old woman helps. They might have young kids that keep them awake for instance or other medical conditions / medications

I know it's an 'average' but where sleep comes into it, all I'm interested in is mine, and did I get enough and if not when was I disturbed, is there a pattern to it.

A key thing for me is lack of REM can signal medical problems such as Parkinson's its data like that I find more pertinent to myself rather that what the herd is doing.

AusterMcEwanCharge HR•

Yeah that's a good point. I think I'm more reacting to Fitbit in general. Stop coming out with so many versions of wearables and start giving me actionable data or even recommendations.

2
VeganAngel•

The new stats showed up in my app but split my sleep. Half with the new stats and the rest with the old graph. I slept with the Charge 2 last night.

2
dadoftwins71309•

I forgot about it until I saw this post. Checking mine now.

2
Cinn4monBun•

I just got the update, can't wait to go to sleep and check it out in the morning :P
