VMware Horizon View Client 4.4.0 + Windows 10 (1703) = massive memory leak

In case anyone else sees this behavior, I thought I'd post this here. It caught me by surprise, and I couldn't find any solution readily available.

I run a small VDI farm for myself and a few other engineers, and I came across an interesting issue. When I upgraded my home desktop to Win 10 1703, I started getting out of memory errors. I tried chasing them down for 3 days.

I reinstalled my desktop (I just built a Ryzen build, I was concerned about craziness in the update) and i had the same issue. I switched to my tablet that also had 1703, and decided the only common thing was VMware. I removed it from the tablet, and it went back to working fine. One I removed it from the desktop, my memory problems went away.

The symptom was an ever increasing amount of committed memory. My commit charge grew to 100% within a few minutes of booting, and it was just a matter of time before my page file had enough.

The real pain was that I couldn't see what was using the memory. Process Explorer wasn't showing me what the issue was. I think it was an associated service that gets installed with the client.

I've switched to the UWP client for now, which sucks...but at least I'm not leaking memory anymore.

That is good to know. We'll soon be deploying some new Win10 notebooks, which will also be used as thin clients via Horizon...

I have done minimal testing on what components can be installed or not with the view installer. Given that I couldn't find a process taking the memory makes me think it was a system issue, but I have no proof, just that the issue went away when I removed the client.

Good luck. I'm going to submit this to VMware when I get to the office tomorrow. I hope they can figure it out soon.

I can confirm that the same thing happens to me, it also happens with older versions of the client. Same work around on my part using the UWP.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad I'm not crazy. I was trying to think of any other similarities between machines, but this seems to be it.

I raised a case with VMware about this and was sent to this 'fix'. Just doing some testing but might be helpful to someone!

THANK YOU

Sadly when I tried this it didn't fix the issue. 😑

It didn't totally fix it for me either honestly, but it did slow the rate of the memory leak enough for me to get what I need off of the remote desktop.

I really wish vmWare would get on this, it's really fucking up our workflow.

I've gone back to them again today, they are working on it apparently!

Thanks for posting that, I've been fighting this for days on a few test clients.

Remember to report it to VMware. The more reports they get, the faster they'll fix it.

Hopefully.

I sent it to our SE at VMware, and will open a support case too.

@corptech Did you happen to open a case for this, and if so what's the case number please?

Trying to get my entitlement setup to our VMware account and has fallen to the back burner, I'm hoping my account on the VMware site is active tomorrow... I've been added but not able to open cases yet (I'm new to the organization but not to VMware - used to be a partner) I'll update as things progress as this bug is growing in our organization as the it staff and executives have W10...

Over a month later, and this still persists. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing it, as attempting to chase down the problem has been annoying the hell out of me, and the only common element has been VMware Horizon View Client.

I still see the same behavior with 4.5.

Yup, I've been watching the downloads page to see if there's an updated version.

I've been having this issue too. I just reopened my ticket.
