Glitter
Doubt's the thing that sticks like glitter
upon pictures friends send on Twitter,
Instagram and Facebook: hope litter.
"Be better. It's easy," they whisper, "Win the game!"
"Or pretend to. It's almost the same."
It dazzles me till I shake my head, grooooaaaaaan
and turn back to coffee and a break,
a rueful and somewhat knowing smile
upon my lips as I look out at the five
now limp-live pot-plants on my balcony.
(She had left. I was away. I hadn't known.)
And I look, and I look, till my eyes travel
to her sandals in the corner,
to her textbook - from last year -
that I'd laid back in place.
And other things left untouched,
Spare toothbrush, muffin tray, glitter
I know. I live here. I see the doubt.
I see the hope. "No escape," I chuckle.
"Keep your hands up. Do not move, we have you
surrounded." I can see my crazy
that's normal if, perhaps, not the best.
and I laugh. Here in hope, here in doubt,
I stand, and I dream. For a bit.
Unconsumed, I live on. It's life.
And so back I wander to Twitter
coffee in hand, as the doorbell chimes.
How can I improve my poem?
For my feedback req's may I use feedback on prose? I have a number on r/keepwriting. I very rarely compose poems.
