Dell servers on backorder?
Hello all,
Just wanted to check in to see how many of you have servers on back order from dell? And how long they normally take to come in from the time your order placed.

Lots of problems with Dell in the last 6 months. Talked with other MSPs having the same issues...
Yeah, same here..
I've personally stuck to VAR dealers, and I have a local one in San Antonio that has done well for my smallish needs. Being that I can drive to Austin and hit a dealer with something in stock, is my only perk to visit 6th street while in Austin.
I have a client in Round Rock (literally across from Dell) we are still waiting on a keyboard replacement for two of his New Alienware 13 R3s. I've ordered two keyboards through a third party (which is also on backorder).
Personally, I'd stick with what a VAR has in stock, and possibly a year old (gen older) just for the availability of spares/replacement parts. Amazon has come in handy a few times.
Altex has been my computer / parts / general inventory stock room for years. More often than not, they carry adequate hardware and it's in stock. Very rarely do I have to order any PC-related hardware they may not have.
And Altex Electronics is one of my Go To's. I didn't want to mention/promote a business, but you nailed it.
I didn't want to mention/promote a business
If people around here are willing to name businesses they're upset with, I think it's fair to name the ones doing it right.
It depends on the components, I've recently (this month) bought a T330 and T430, custom configured, both shipped in 6-9 days, the one with SSD's in it...54 day back order....
That might be from the shortage of SSDs... Dell and HP are having the same issue.
they gotta have something to justify the 3x price of their ssd drives.
3x compared to What? We've been getting the drives for like .5-.6 / GB..
last few times ive checked the same drive minus their "firmware" was on cdw/techdata/newegg for a 3rd of the price.
Yeah, but not just servers, desktops often take 2-3 weeks to come. Or they just decide to cancel the order without informing us.
My last "ships same day" order took over a week just to ship... Getting tired of them and don't get me started on trying to use their website, feels like I'm back on dialup.
Hmm my dell desktops that I order through our premier page is usually at most 1 week. But otherwise 2-3 days shipped next day air.
We had to order a pair of idrac enterprise 7 licenses through Dell about 2 months ago. 4 cancelled orders later and 4 weeks later, we finally get the licenses. Oh, also had to call and escalate why they didn't show up in our digital locker.
Lesson learned: Get idrac enterprise when the server is first ordered, not later.
At least they have the 30 day trial that helps a little for urgent issues.
Next time just send Xbyte the service tag and you will have the key by the next day. We are done going direct for these types of things. If you know what you need Dell is not too bad. I've been happy with our reps but it took a lot of work to get them.
I normally use Ingram, but was told that idrac license are now direct sales only as of about 1-2 yrs ago. Have you bought idrac licenses from xbyte in that time?
I bought one about 8 months ago and had Xbyte quote one last month.
I need to buy one for an R630 today so we'll see how it goes.
Good news to hear! Please update if you have a good experience.
How do you get your licenses through Xbyte? Dell digital locker or do they provide them directly?
Same here. DELL CTO AT INGRAM MICRO IS A JOKE!
Takes us a minimum of a week to get a REPLY, and 5-6 WEEKS minimum to get shipment.
It had been server SSDs holding up our orders lately.
Xbyte
Worked ok a build with them a couple weeks ago and was told that they were 60+ days our with almost every SSD.
LOL looks like they switch to CW
I just went through a nightmare with replacement parts for one of the rugged latitudes. went through over a month waiting game, for them to then say it is on extended backorder with no ETA. so they had to send me a replacement PC
FWIW, I get refurbs from Optio Data and have had great luck
You ordering with SSD's? There's a worldwide shortage on memory right now.
That explains a lot. I just ordered some DDR4 for my personal rig and paid 2x the price I did a year ago
I've had nothing but problems with Dell recently.
I bought a server that was needed at short notice - they had a 2 week lead time - my account manager recommended a slightly older model (v3 instead of v4 cpu) and said it was in stock... I can order that with an extra PSU/riser which would come a day after.
...the riser didn't come - I got the usual all Dell orders are final/I couldn't return.
Riser didn't arrive for 3 weeks.
I really hate Dell and account management really has gone downhill fast....
This has been a problem since 2013. I started noticing lead times increased and stock dwindled to almost on demand purchasing. Plan ahead and should be fine.
