Worst Seasons in the Past 25 Years Part 10: Boston College
Welcome to the Worst Season in the Past 25 Years, a series in which r/CollegeHockey reviews the worst season for all 60 Division I teams over the summer to alleviate the crushing boredom known as the off-season and take a horrific tour down memory lane.
If you are interested in writing an entry for your team, please let me know via PM. I’ll be posting entries on weekdays at approximately at 6 pm Eastern time and will be going in alphabetical order. If an entry is not posted at that time, assume that “real life” has gotten in the way and that I am not able to post. If I am aware in advance that I will not post at 6 pm on a particular day, I will announce it in prior posts as a heads up.
And now.../r/CollegeHockey presents the Boston College Eagles! BC are one of the blue bloods of the East, sharing that distinction with their eternal soulmate rivals Boston University. The BC hockey program is quite a storied one, having it’s origins in the interwar period. There were two breaks in the Eagles’ history: 1929-1932 (probably due to the Great Depression) and 1943-1945 (most likely due to the Second World War). BC has won the Ice Dance 5 times (four of them within the past 25 years) and makes frequent title challenges in Hockey East. Despite this storied history, it shall be noted that even a blue blood is capable of having a down year or two. For the Eagles, this is…

-Hockey East quarterfinals.
Biggest Beatdown: Maine 9 - Boston College 1
Head Coach: Steve Cedorchuk
In his first season, Cedorchuk lead the Eagles to a single digit win season for the first time since 1957-58. John Callahan lead the team with 19 goals while John Paul Joyce had 31 assists (!!!). No goalkeeping stats were available :(
The Eagles’ season started off with a win away to Army West Point before heading to Alaska. In Anchorage, BC and Alaska Anchorage split the series at one each. The non-con slate continued with a game at Vermont, which ended with a draw. A home-and-home series with Lowell was split to start the Hockey East slate, while a home-and-home with New Hampshire the following weekend garnered only a draw. The month rounded off with visitors from the North Country, a 6-all draw with St. Lawrence and a 6-0 loss to Clarkson.
In December, the Eagles had a relatively quiet month. Starting off with Providence, the Eagles and Friars obtained one win each at home. A midweek matchup with Boston lead into a two week break before facing Spartak in an exhibition game. A trip to Wisconsin for the Badger Hockey Showdown finished the calendar year.
The new year started with a rare Sunday match away to Harvard. The following weekend, BC played Northeastern to a win and a draw. A midweek game with Yale ended in victory, then came the series with the eternal enemy. Yeah...BU thumped BC by a combined score of 12-3. A home series against Maine did not improve matters, but a split series with Merrimack might have.
February kicked off with another game (the fourth of the season) against the Terriers, this time in the Beanpot. A conference game away to Merrimack sandwiched the two loses in the Beanpot (BC lost to Northeastern in the consolation game). Two home-and-home series with Lowell and New Hampshire also ended with no points for the Eagles. A series with Providence finished off the month with a win and a draw.
Maine thought it would be funny to add to BC’s misery by giving them their worst result of the season (9-1). The Hockey East regular season schedule ended with a home loss to wooden spooners Northeastern. Then came the playoffs...BC v BU, an attempt to show your rivals your superiority when it matters. BU won in two games, 11-3 in aggregate.
Cedorchuk lasted one more season as head coach before being replaced by current coach Jerry York. Under York, the Eagles have won multiple Hockey East regular season titles and playoff trophies, made several Ice Dance appearances and won the Natty four times. BC have made their claim as one of college hockey’s elite and it does not look like that will be changing in the short run.
For Week 3 of this series, we will look at the worst seasons in recent memory for the following schools: Boston University, Bowling Green, Brown, Canisius and Clarkson. Once again, if you are interested in doing the entry for your favorite school, shoot me a PM. Your school, name, and date will be added at the end of each post to serve as a reminder. So far, the following people have inquired about a spot:
