“Man, name your risky wish,” she said on the climb.
I thought about death on a black diamond.
We were stuck in a frigid airlocked lift;
I dreamt of my quiet fire-stoked cabin,
which she’d call a secluded tomb.
At the summit she was pretty fast,
all alpine snowshoes in the lonely wind.
She lured me as the slopes grew colder;
we two gathered for the skin-tight ritual
that she said she’d wear on her sleeve.
We lost our bodies in my cabin,
I traced my tongue across her wintry skin.
“Does Vail chill your beating heart?” I asked
when she shivered in our nest of love.
“I need you, skin, sinew and blood,” she said
and cut my name into her widow’s list.
