You can sprint while drinking potions

MHWorld

First thing I tested in the beta. You just press the sprint button and you can sprint while drinking. It makes you go faster at the cost of stamina.

New players won't be able to experience the awesome but deadly animations :(

But really though, healing should be a risky thing to do and if you do it at the wrong time then you should be punished IMO

Gailus•

True, but MHW won't have the safety of rolling through the zone door if a monster is being particularly aggressive. I think they added this as a compromise for the lack of 100% safe healing options.

How often did people actually do that, though? It slowed things down incredibly so doing it every time you got hit was highly impractical. Crossing an entire zone to heal could be a bit risky.

I know the devs themselves use this excuse, but it seems really flimsy to me.

TeamFortifier•

I did it virtually all the time in MHFU

Gailus•

I understand that fully. My given excuse also fails to account for the fact that the arena and single zone quests never allowed for that sort of play without farcasters.

That said, I do remember my early days of playing where I had no idea how to fight and heal safely. During that time I needed to leave the zone fairly often just to get a breather. I think that the dev team made this decision explicitly to target the loss of that safety net for newer players and less patient players.

I am going to miss the flex though. I wish they'd kept the flex as a kind of reward for standing still while healing as if to show off.

ShadyFigureJask | http://i.imgur.com/LubnDEV.jpg•

Yeah, I can definitely see that. The flex lock was a very common complaint from people that hadn't grasped the combat system yet before. I am disappointed that they're sacrificing the challenge and experience of players comfortable with the system for the sake of new players. There had to have been a better compromise.

I wish they'd kept the flex as a kind of reward for standing still while healing as if to show off.

It would be nice to have that, when no (dangerous) monsters are nearby.

I feel like sprinting should slightly drain the rest of the potion as long as you're sprinting, or massively increase the stamina cost of sprinting while drinking

2
Drakinator123•

Yeah I kinda forgot about that, you either have to run far away or hide if you need a breather from fighting

You can still be punished for drinking a potion at the wrong time. Drinking it takes a while longer, and it's perfectly possible to get hit even while moving, especially since you can only move slightly faster than normal moving speed.

But overall, this does make healing easier, given that you can also roll out of the drinking animation and that you can still get some restoration out of a potion even if you didn't drink it all. However, I believe this creates better gameplay overall. If you need to heal, then that means that you're broken out of the action. And if you can find more windows of opportunity to heal, then you can get back to hunting sooner, and not just run around the monster looking for an opportunity to heal. The monster will also still be trying to kill them anyway, so it's not like this actually makes you completely safe, especially if you judge the situation wrong.

I really don't like the idea that players should be punished more for healing. If a player is going to heal, then they've already been hit by a monster's attack, probably several times. By that point, they've already been punished quite a bit. What point is there to adding another layer of challenge here?

I'm not saying that players shouldn't be challenged. I'm not even saying that players shouldn't be challenged to heal themselves. Being forced to hold still to heal is pretty unintuitive, and I think it puts the player at risk in a way that's not necessarily good for gameplay.

And most people will hunt in groups anyway. And those who don't will probably be hunting with their Palico. In those cases, there's a lot of room to heal anyway, since the monster won't always be focused on you. And even if you do come completely by yourself, there will still be 2 other monsters that can show up on any map.

If you never get hit at all, it doesn't matter. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah it's been integrated into the map. Also, I don't see paintballs and it looks like the monster is just always tracked?

I don't want to play too much, we're having a huge "beta" party tonight and a lot of my hunting party is at work. While I'm an office worker off on weekends. :<

1
ShinaiYukona•

Ehhh. They're not too significant imo.

Every monster in the past was trackable by just observing the environment. Aptanoths fleeing into you zone? Roars, wind, growls, etc? Shadows from above? Tremors passing through? Etc.

I don't personally like scout flies because they're distracting, but I don't think they "remove" from the original experience at all either.

Evodius•

The visuals are already incredibly impressive. Can't wait to get it for PC.

I'm pretty impressed, but I agree the scout flies are kind of weird to me.

They're great for new hunters, but I'd like to turn them off.

One thing I've found interesting, is that I'm so used to the old system that it's kinda hard to break the habit of stopping to use them. Anyone else experience this?

5
hollowxcrown•

200% been stopping to heal! It's so annoying! I also don't like the way the radial menu pops up when I hold L1 to access the quick menu, other than that though I can see this game being one of the best in the series

Edit: added missing words.

2
PM_ME_FUN_STORIES•

You can disable the radial, thank God. It's in the setting somewhere.

3
hollowxcrown•

Thanks mate, will look at the settings :)

Jk!

I'd just like to point out to people that this kind of thing is something very, very easy to patch out of they feel like things need balancing. Ps4 and xbone patching is a lot easier than on 3ds.

Edit: downvoted for... What exactly? I honestly don't have a clue here...

ShadyFigureJask | http://i.imgur.com/LubnDEV.jpg•

I don't believe it will be patched out. This was clearly done to make it easier for new players to get into the series, and for those people not familiar with the series' combat this is a very welcome change. Undoing it would upset many new adopters, and if the series takes off like they hope it would that may be the majority.

1
MeltianWith a side of Greatsword•

My point stands that it IS possible to do so though.

Whether they do or not is a different matter.

1
notyou-ITSME•

So Socks, the Community Manager, was actually not telling us the truth about this.

The movement speed is likely slower than normal sprinting, so he was interpreting it as "you can't sprint at normal sprint speed while using a potion."

I don't think he was intentionally obfuscating a fact, but I do feel that he was unnecessarily vague in his definition.

8
AtskadanOP•

i feel like something is off when arekkz, team darkside, and socks all said "no, you can't do this," and all 3 were wrong about it. either they somehow didnt understand that sprint = using stamina (highly doubt it) or they lied about it for some reason.

3†
titanhermant•

Or it's a new addition

1
AtskadanOP•

no, its been shown in footage, which is the entire reason anyone asked. they outright lied.

This is exactly what I said weeks ago but was downvoted.

That's a shame, healing breaks were lovely to me for the challenge.

ToxitoxiEvery monster looks like the world's biggest nail.•

I was thinking this made the game too easy.

Then I fought Diablos.

1
flawlessbrown•

I've been watching streams all day, I havent seen anyone sprinting while drinking, can someone post a link? Like i think it's more than fine, it takes a solid 3 seconds to fully heal withing a mega potion or else you waste it.

1
DrakonLitshed•

It's not really a sprint, if you hold the sprint button while using an item it increases your speed from the slow walk to a brisk jog.

2
AtskadanOP•

i made a video comparing the various speeds https://giant.gfycat.com/AggressiveVainCowbird.webm

1
flawlessbrown•

no clue why the people i've been watching haven't been trying to sprint. i wish walking speed was the most you could do, thanks for this video.

1
DrakonLitshed•

I'm surprised this isn't common knowledge, first time i used a potion while fighting a monster my first instinct was to hold sprint and see if it made me move faster to make sure the monster didn't hit me while i waited to heal.

Nzash•

Well, MHW is a casualized game for the west. No matter what the devs at Capcom say, it's a fact and this demo is proof of it.
