Finally playing Bloodborne

[Discussion]

Didn't have time for it at release, then other things repeatedly got in the way. Finally saw the complete edition on a good sale so I went for it.

I've completed nearly all of the Souls games, but this is the first one that consistently keeps me frustrated in terms of.. where the hell are the save points?? The only Lamp I've found is the second one in Central Yharnam. I've opened up the gate next to the lamp for a shortcut, and another gate near the big troll guy banging on the door, but I keep exploring and fail to find another one. Makes me feel like the Souls games spoiled me with somewhat generous save point placements, while this game just keeps giving me the middle finger.

I'm enjoying the game quite a bit in terms of the combat mechanics and gothic art style, but dangit I wish it'd let me save my progress more conveniently

Yeah, Bloodborne is very sparse with saves, even more reliant on shortcuts between saves than Souls games. Been a while since I played it, but I honestly think that you've found every save point you can until you've beaten the first boss.

Edit: Actually, if you've unlocked the shortcut near the first lamp, you've gone past the first boss. At the end of the long bridge where there are two werewolves is the first boss (it's optional though) beating it will get you a save spot. If you can't remember how to get to that bridge, go through the shortcut gate, there's a building you can enter on the right at the bottom of the stairs. Go to the second floor of that building to find stairs that will take you right outside the boss gate.

BB gives you a lantern every time you beat a boss, like Demons Souls or DS3, but other than that there are usually no other lanterns besides the one at the beginning of the area.

Thankfully with the increased agility that hunters have, and the amount of shortcuts, I never felt like I was too far from any one place in an area.

There are one or two annoying boss routes, the forbidden woods being my least favorite, but they're all doable.

Oh man getting to the boss(es) in the Forbidden Woods was a huge chore. I didn't even know about the shortcut so I cheated and looked it up, but it was STILL miles away with two pigs in the middle. I enjoyed that level up until that point.

Yeah, it didn't help that the Shadows stonewalled me on my level 4 run.

The areas around lamps really aren't that big. Everything comes together in a circle, or are either below or above you. Once you unlock shortcuts, you'll actually feel that the areas are somewhat small.

You still have a couple more shortcuts to unlock to the same lamp. So yeah - like everyone else said, the game is very heavy with the shortcuts to lamps ratio. Probably because they didn't want being able to warp anywhere to make the game too easy like in Dark Souls 2. Unfortunately they seemed to have reneged on that in Souls 3, but I like Bloodborne's implementation.

Central Yharnam is deliberately dense, sprawling, and intimidating. Most of the later areas in the game are far smaller and more linear....at least, they become easier to navigate the more used to the game you become.

Have you fought the Cleric Beast yet? Or Father Gascoigne? There is an elevator you need to unlock to get to Gascoigne, but once you do, both bosses are pretty close to that lamp.
