Hey Wargaming, why did USN CVs lose their AS loadouts yet the IJN got to keep them?
Playing games in Ranger against anything that's not a Ranger is hell. CVs just got interesting at T6 and I enjoyed the Independence a lot, but playing Ranger against a Kaga or Saipan (with obligatory Atlanta in division!) or AS Hiryu is just not fun.
One of the main issues I feel with CVs is an imbalance of fighter plane waves at most tiers. Why does the Ranger only get one when AS Hiryu gets three? In fact, why do any of the IJN CVs get to keep air supremacy loadouts when the USN had theirs removed? It's just as cancerous as the AS Bogue was.
I really hope that things get better with the Lexington, but that too only has one fighter wave. Since the learning curve is steeper than the Berlin Wall, it doesn't matter if they're the tankiest fighters on the Earth, 2 plane waves (especially Saipan's bullshit T9 fighters) will almost always wreck a single one, especially if you're still learning how to CV.
But still, my main issue rn is wondering why the IJN still have AS loadouts. CV loadouts should be balanced, and 2-2-2 Hiryu is much better to play against than the AS one.
Yes, you'll say I am salty, and you'd be correct. But this learning curve (especially at tier 7) is what has ensured most players don't go near carrier play. It is the central issue that I hope is addressed in a hypothetical carrier rework. I have a newfound respect for CV players having got to the Ranger. I don't even want to get into the amount of shit I get in chat for it.

The IJN AS load-outs are not really a reliable threat, though. It's very rare to see them, probably because it takes a significant piece of your strike power, and there aren't that many scenarios where if you can't manage to wield 2 fighter squadrons to dominate the skies, you will with 3.
There's also a strong correlation between choosing AS load-outs (at least in random battles) and bad CV players who can't strafe themselves out of a paper bag. Like just bundling up their squadrons, ripe for mass-strafing them to smithereens. I think if you're good with fighters, you don't actually need an extra squadron to be a dick to the other CV.
For what it's worth, in Saipan I tend to have an easier time dealing with Hiryu than Ranger. Against ranger, you just can't afford to have a regular click-attack dogfight with his fighters to keep him occupied, you'll just lose the planes. You need to perform this strafing-tango to get anywhere, stopping you from being efficient with your bombers at the same time.
The exception is probably 4/2/2 Hakuryu, although I haven't seen enough T10 CVs or played enough of them recently on PTto determine whether the times I've seen 4/2/2/ Haks own the skies are because the Midway/Hakuryu on the other team sucked or because it's actually a viable loadout. I'd imagine so, because 4/2/2 negates Midway's fighter advantage to a substantial degree and allows you to attack his bombers even if you devote 3 squads to getting rid of his 2, but I don't consider myself experienced or skilled enough with carriers to come to a conclusion based on theory alone.
However, I do agree with this notion as a whole. I see a ton of 3/1/1 Ryujos in scenarios, and all of them use their massive ball of fighters for nothing more than bomber escort. As a result they don't care about enemy AA and are usually devoid of strike planes or close to it before the first set of objectives is compete. Then they just sit around and, in the best-case scenario, whine about how their team/how bad their ship is while their fighters orbit the carrier instead of spotting, and in the worst case, they just stay quiet and pretend to have DC'd by landing their planes. Before USN AS loadouts were removed, I also saw 9/10 American AS CVs just babysit their bombers with fighters.
i've so far only played my ryujo in operations (since i suck at manual drops/strafing) and there isn't a single one i'd even consider going 3-1-1 for. the only one i could think of is aegis since 3 CVs spawn at the same time, but then you get a saipan as support anyway.
my guess on why most people lose their planes so fast is that they don't consider that any opposing ship that could possibly run DefAA will run it.
I've seen them quite a lot on EU but I'd concur AS load outs to tend to be a bit more potato than others. I've fought more than a few AS carriers in ships with far worse fighters, Enterprise for example and easily come out ontop with my pretty average strafing ability because a lot of the time they just won't attempt it.
*cough 422 hakuryu *cough that thing is absolute cancer
The last three Ryiuos I met were all 3/1/1...
Any indeed 3/1/1 is quite powerful in terms of AS when Indi can only have 1/1/1 and you can easily lock his one Fighter squad down with one squad and strafe them dead with a second while still having another squad to strafe his TBs...
I played a game against an AS Hiryu in which I got trashed. He could strafe, quite well too, whereas I still haven't mastered it. I may have only encountered one, but it was still annoying as hell and I feel like even if I had played better I wouldn't have been able to do shit.
And it's the strafing tango with Saipan which is really difficult to deal with. I slip up for a single This is what I was saying with the skill gap, which is what I feel is the main problem with CVs is they're difficult to learn with this nonsense going on.
Yeah, when I sail out my Saipan and I run into a particularily naive player, it can really feel dirty farming Clear Skies while you know the other player probably has no idea what hit him. As a tip, I have learned to deal better with enemy fighter superiority in the Zuiho after the T5 autodrop change, especially when AS bogue was still on the menu. If you can't strafe to get an edge, you develop more skill in evading enemy fighters and being careful with choosing your fighter battles.
From the other end, if I'm a Hiryu facing a Saipan, I know there's a 30% chance I'll have a really bad game, but in 70% of cases I can still manage to get enough drops through to make a difference.
Never start the strafe tango. Kite with your fighters and wait for the enemy to make the first move. If you dodge his strafe you‘ll be able to strafe the backs of his fighters resulting in a squad wipe for the enemy. Stay focused and play around with them, stay close to the enemy so you can counter strafe him immediately.
Note: it‘s not really necessary to align the perfect strafe from behind, you just need to get an advantage over your enemy (ie if he looses 3-4 planes per squad) then you can easily go ahead and click them, ofc you should calculate the risks, even engaging a 4 planes USN squad will result in plane loses on your side.
I know a few players who run the AS because their connection is laggy and enemy planes are never where they show up on the UI - like strafe the enemy fighters - they're in the zone the entire strafe, and then they pop up 2-3 km away unhurt...
If you can't reliably strafe due to lag, you're going to have a bad time against a skilled enemy CV, no matter how many squads you have.
Yeah, that's very true. Then again, the particular person I have in mind has been on the Indy and Ryujo for about... since they did the CV strafe/manual drop rework...
