This is disappointing. My main complaint with Nintendo has always been that cool games get made for 3DS and I can't play them because my old man eyes can't see that tiny screen, and my old man hands can't play a 3DS without getting hand cramps for longer than 15 minutes.
I thought the Switch would be the answer, but it looks like they're determined to keep making things for 3DS I won't be able to play.
Uh oh. Did we ever get confirmation that the next Pokemon or Fire Emblem games are actually on Switch or did we just jump to that conclusion?
For Pokemon at least they said that they are working on a main Switch title. Of course, that doesn't mean that we might not see another 3DS title before the Switch title. People are constantly talking about remakes, and it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities to get one with the Sun/Moon engine.
I believe Nintendo or Game Freak said somewhere that Ultra Sun and Moon would be the final main series titles on the 3DS.
Besides, the pattern has been that each console gets only one set of remakes (GBA got FRLG, DS got HGSS, 3DS got ORAS).
They confirmed they're developing Pokemon on Fire Emblem on the Switch, I don't think the word "next" was used. Maybe with Fire Emblem since the Echoes idea has been successful they might keep doing remakes on 3DS while new games hit the Switch.
I believe Intellgent Systems stated Echoes was the last 3ds fire emblem game (not including warriors game or other potential spinoffs)
Ah, if so I hadn't heard that.

Interesting. A lot of people assumed that teams who previously worked on 3DS games would be working on Switch games. It sounds like that won't be the case.
I'm not buying into it. Right now, there's only two games announced for 3DS this year by Nintendo. Detective Pikachu and a new IP Called Sushi Striker, which doesn't look too ambitious. They can announce more for later in the year, like Dragon Quest XI and maybe another Lady Layton title, but its clear, Nintendo's slowing down on the 3DS market and shifting focus elsewhere.
Shrug That may have been their plan initially, but like he said:
"we intend to continue the Nintendo 3DS business separately and in parallel."
Besides, despite the Switch's impressive 14 million in a year, 3DS is sitting on a massive install base, and apparently still selling strong. That's a great reason to keep making games.
I doubt they're making games other than ports or remasters that have been sitting in the pipeline.

Verbatim same argument I saw last year, and the year before. Repeatedly disproven. I saw people saying both in 2016 AND 17 of E3 that Nintendo wouldn't have anymore 3DS games, and then they had more 3DS games.
You're willing to say another 15-ish games are going to release by Nintendo this year? I'm have trouble believing that. At least at this time last year we knew they had at least 6 Retail games coming to 3DS by the end of 2017. This year, once again, only 2 announced and no new games after the Direct Mini. I'm being very doubtful that this year will be more than localized titles like Yokai Watch and Dragon Quest trying to fill out this year
What arbitrary number is that? Any releases means it's not dead. Also you are still pretty much saying exactly what people said in 2016 and 2017. And here we are with them yet again affirming it has a future.
I don't know why this comment was so heavily down voted. Regardless how many games Nintendo announce this year for 3/2DS, it does seem clear that they won't suddenly abandon its massive install base (who are apparently still buying software).
They won't abandon it, but their prime focus is certainly not the 3DS.
When I listened to the Nintendo Voice Chat podcast, they even said the newest Kirby game is more of a third party family friendly game, and isn't a full retail quality game, compared to stuff like Zelda, Pokemon or Smash. The Kirby game is specifically for families who might want to pick up an inexpensive spin off title for their children.
That's another sign the 3DS is on its way out.
They are in support of remakes and ports. This does not mean new installments.
Well isn't it the case with Pokemon and Ace Attorney?
Yes, and Fire Emblem as well. It's also worth noting that Nintendo is pretty even with their platforms - the same teams have made games for both handhelds and consoles.
I think the important distinction is that teams are in support of keeping 3DS alive, and not making new games.
When people see "Oh the 3DS will still get support", they seem to think that means "making new first party titles" or otherwise "focusing on third party titles that aren't ports."
The 3DS is not getting any significant first party titles. All dev teams that worked on Zelda, Mario, Pokemon and Smash have turned their attention to the Switch.
All the games that are releasing this year, which are notable such as Shin Megami Tensei, Etrian Odyssey and Radiant Historia, are all remakes/ports.
Any first party titles are games that have been sitting in the pipeline. All the titles we will see in 2018 are past titles that have been remade (not the same as a brand new first party instalment) for the 3DS, or third party titles that have been worked on by smaller dev teams.

December was one the of the 3DS's best months in years, so it's not shocking to hear support from Nintendo. Will be interesting to see how much support it gets over the next year though. I don't think it gets major 1st party support, but could see similar titles like Mario Party Top 100 come out. Nintendo has consistently said they would support old consoles, and quickly drop said support when consumers switched over to the new platform.
You're absolutely right. There's all this talk about Nintendo dropping 3DS because, logically, it looks like it overlaps with Switch too much.
But the install base for 3DS (and 2DS) is massive. It continues to perform well, and players on those consoles are still buying games in high volumes.
I never expected Nintendo to simply abandon that. The 3/2DS line is Nintendo's bread and butter, which they'll definitely keep around until the point where it isn't viable (or, they introduce another dedicated portable of some sort).
I like the 3ds better because in my opinion the 3D technology is better then 720 on a switch and I can fit the 3DS in my pocket better.
Regardless of the 3D effect, the 240p resolution is honestly holding a lot of people back. It’s just so ugly.
I guess it is a limiting factor but for higher fidelity 3D I can just use VR instead
I think the portability and battery life are better, definitely. And there's already a huge, well-established library of games to play. I personally prefer the Switch - I'm not a big handheld gamer - but still, the 3DS is simply too successful for Nintendo to pull the plug right now.
