Sport Shot Tournament - Newbie Help

Technique

First, a little bit about myself. I bowled for 3 or 4 years on a youth league until I was about 16. Then took a 16 year break. I've been back into bowling for a couple months now. I haven't joined a league, but I've been bowling a couple times a week and my average is probably somewhere near 180 right now. I currently have a Storm Hy-road Nano, a Storm Tropical, and the Ebonite Nitro urethane that I used back in youth league.

There is a local grind tournament near me tomorrow. It's 6 games across 6 lanes with a sport shot pattern that will be announced the morning of. I'd like to give it a shot but don't want to make a fool of myself. Any advice? Anything I should know going in?

There is ALWAYS a chance of making a fool of yourself lol! BUT there is also that chance you'll end up doing just fine and maybe winning a little cash. A lot of sport shots is being versatile enough to play different angles, speed control, and spare making. If you feel pretty confident in your spare game and your ability to hit your target, you can have some good games which might be all you need if this thing is handicapped. If it won't cost a fortune to enter and you've got nothing better going on, then go for it!

Sport shots can be tough. If you're averaging 180 on a house shot right now, don't feel bad if you're shooting 150-160 on a sport shot. There's that much less miss room which is going to lead to you missing the pocket more regularly and potentially leaving more nasty splits and what have you.

Go out there and have fun. Don't be hard on yourself for not hitting a house shot average. No one will be doing that. :P

Try to go as straight as you can. Spares are tougher to make unless you use a spare ball for spares on both sides. Hooking at spares on the left side and multi pins on both sides are going to be hard. Limit bad leaves by staying straight. Urethane could work..

If it's handicap you are going to be at a distinct disadvantage since you don't have one. If tournament bowling is something you want to pursue you would do well to figure out a way to get some sanctioned league games in this year. Usually without an established USBC average you have to bowl scratch.

It is a scratch tournament.
