Mining with options....

Hello commanders, I’m new ( just got the app). I need some advice. I’m currently getting my butt whipped in haz res mining. I recently got a python, anaconda and now a type 9. Can this fine community share how they survive in this zone. Just got into engineering so don’t have these ships modded yet. I do know how to mine, tho I wouldn’t be half as good without the insights found here. I think the python is good and fast but I like the idea of the fighter bay of the anaconda. I have only used the anaconda in the haz Rez but I figured if I can’t survive in that then I doubt I’d survive in the others.....

You don't HAVE to mine at a RES. You can mine ANYWHERE in the ring.

Mining in a RES has the avdantage of getting more fragments per asteroid, but you get pirates with it. That's the trade-off. If you have a high-ranked fighter pilot, and when you stay at a distance of 19-20 km from the RES center, you could mine at a RES.

I never mine there, I always stay away from the RES.

Also Haz and High apparently have the same fragment bonus? So no reason to go Haz unless you like to live dangerously.

TBH, even without the SLF mining at 19-20 km is pretty safe. The big trick is to let yourself get scanned before you start mining. Usually, you get ignored after that. It's possible to get scanned by more than one pirate, of course, but usually the RES locations get full of security response ships by the time the second pirate shows up to hassle you.

I started like that but for gaming excitement, plus it’s faster filling the hull.....and the bounties. The game is not the same since going there. It’s like mining on steroids. I love it.

I find it's not practical to juggle pirate combat with mining. Your collector limpets get trashed by flying off behind rocks too often.

Better to stay in the 15-20km ring around the RESwhere pirates come a-knocking very rarely. It's a pain in the arse staying in the ring, if you'll pardon the pun. I keep losing track of where I've been and retreading my steps.

There's a halfway house I've done a few times recently of picking up a mission to Massacre the pirates that most commonly spawn in the RES. That way I can mine in relative safety until I get a little bored, then sail into the centre of the RES and fight my way through until I'm in the 15-20km zone on the far side.

This gives a welcome break and also plonks me far from the bit I've strip-mined to depletion.

You stay at 15-20 km in the outskirts and mine as said here previously.

You engineer your modules:

  • G5 Thermal Resist 6A Shields (preferably prismatics) og 6C biweaves

  • Shield Cell banks in the class 6 compartments.

  • You use 1 x extra ammo chaff

  • you use 1 x heat sink extra ammo

  • 6 x A boosters, 4 res augmented, 1 thermal, 1 kinetic augmented

  • class 6 fighter bay

  • you equip 2 x large gimballed fragment cannons on top (engineered with g5 double shot and incendiary), 1 Huge Cannon (engineered with g5 overcharged multi-servo, 1 large turreted pulse laser (rapid fire + multi-servos), 2 x small rapid fire seeker missiles.

That's it. Use FA OFF when turning (or always). For bigger pirates you wham into them and release the double frags. 1-2 volleys are enough to drop a conda's shields. Then hammer with Huge cannon until dead. Let the pulse laser turret target take on smaller craft and use seekers to finish them off when shields are down.

And practice.

That setup sound crazy. I definitely gonna try it. Lmao. Not to be greedy but did u find a way to do it in a type 9 or should I have brought a type 10. My money is running low so it’ll take so time to get the 10 and/or do the engineering but I wanted to use the anaconda for expeditions. Tho I’d use it if there were no other option.

A T10 is definitely possible. Just use repair limpets and AFMU + plenty of module reinforcement and hull reinforcements. Also minimise the use of energy weapons and you should be golden.

In no particular order of importance:

  • Don't drop in a RES with cargo in your hold (limpets are fine). Re-log counts as drop.
  • Don't go closer than 15 km in High/Haz RES
  • Mine a High REZ instead of Hazardous, police is there to help you, especially in high security systems
  • Pay particular attention to pirates' combat ranks, know when to run
  • Mine in a ship with an SLF, have a well-ranked SLF pilot
  • Wing up with other commanders
  • Improve your weapons and defences with engineering.

u/Cold-n-Sour has written a very usefull guide on mining efficiency And a while back u/ChicagoChad wrote on [mining in Haz-Res] (https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteMiners/comments/7venbv/rep_grind_with_mining_missions/) which is still partially valid (the 50km-from-center SLF bug has been fixed)

Also, the bar on the right should contain some wiki documentation on RES mining

Lastly, this post from a few weeks back links to a youtube video showing a Njikan RES route and the discussion sheds some more light on RES mining.

Thanks for the help ppl. I guess I got beat so bad I didn’t want to go and fit multiple load outs only to find it’s really not possible. Technically it shouldn’t be “imho”. but I like the idea of not giving into criminal scum .... lmao.

So is it possible to do RES mining by equipping a few turreted weapons and set them to fire at will? My understanding is that they'll shoot at anything that shoots at you, but I'm not sure if that's actually enough to fend them off.

Well I make out ok with a anaconda and a starter level fighter pilot. But in hazard Res. there are no cop to help so its harder. Then when the anaconda pirate (big sharks) comes it’s either give up the goods or get out of the water quick. Lmao

I mine in a rez, but in 15-20KM away from center. If something starts shooting me my python easily gets away from 90% of encounters. If something else is so fast it keeps up with 390 boosts, i fly up and go into hyperdrive.

Also it helps if you're engineered. Your shields should be engineered with thermal resistance, and shield boosters maybe with all resistance or with the shield strength (I run 2 strenth and 1 all resist).
