Engine is almost certainly a Toyota 8R.
Did they use those in military land cruisers?
I don't know but I know of one that was used as a mooring.

No markings on the valve cover? It is a gas engine. 1960's or newer based on the alternator and starter.
Is the DOT number on those tires readable?
Oh man I didnt even think to get a pic of the tires. I don't know if we would have been able to get anything off them, everything was really rotted.
First awesome geocache! Second. Like u/tlivingd said looks like a 'yota.
i agree.. either an 8RC or an 18RC..
its crazy you just have golden pothos as a random jungle plant.
18 rc is the my guess
I know the military used to do training missions in the windward ko'olaus, Ive found vehicle parts up there on numerous occasions. Probably left over from one of those missions.
Looks like an internal combustion engine to me.
70's toyota http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3933033/1971-toyota-hilux/photo-gallery/
maybe late 60's
Put some gas in there and if it turns over it's a Toyota
Might have a winner here. My first thought was Japanese, followed by Nissan not using a downdraft carb so that lines up with a Toyota.
Pretty freaking amazing man...
